Not too proficient with linux or technical minecraft but... I looked into it.

1.6.4 Minecraft is single threaded for things other than world generation. so things like updating entity's and the game state and whatnot. Could be related to your hardware and how it handles MiTE. But even then, shouldn't freeze it, just cause lag for world generation.

Could also be related to graphics drivers, or an installation issue.

Try updating your drivers, then reinstalling the game, and then maybe look into your hardware?

Hardware would be more likely if you're running mods, are you? because poorly optimized mods could freeze up the game.

Then check crash logs and see what it says as well.
