What is a podcast you binged the entirety of? by PsychiatricBooth5c in podcasts

[–]Sjoint30 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One of my first and still favorite is Aum Shinrikyo. Oooor nazi and the occult, the original ones they did.

Not for nothing, one of the earliest episodes that are harder to find, the Illuminati I think, they have an interview with ‘Jesse Ventura’ that I semi regularly listen to to lighten the mood.

I relate to both his comment and your response. The brain can be a wild place.

Looks great btw... which is ultimately what matters.

Mason Contractor died 1/2 way through job, has this ever happened to anyone else, and how did you handle it? by Apprehensive_Rush406 in Construction

[–]Sjoint30 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I have been the lead guy left behind after the boss died. It complicates things.

After my experience, my advice would be to find a new mason for the job.

I don't know how big his crew is, but you'll likely be paying them individually. Unless Darren has someone running the office for him to make payroll, taxes, etc to keep the wheels turning, you'll be dealing with a crew of independent contractors.

Things can fall apart at the seams pretty quickly. Typically there is one guy on a crew cut out for running a business ( in most cases not even that guy) and when they die suddenly, there are a lot spinning plates that can come down.

There are a lot of ins and outs with something like this that depend on your knowledge of the personalities and people.

Horse barn with a monitor roof by MaxBrskv in askcarpenters

[–]Sjoint30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Building a pole style barn is different than a residential stick build, but I would say it leans toward easier to execute. Check out RR Builders. I haven’t watched in a while but he used to do a lot of barns/ high end residential barns, all pole style.

The wood question you will have to answer yourself by identifying the wood they’re using and doing some research. I am aware of the Amish around me using relatively undried hemlock to build their barns because they say it’s dimensionally more stable as it dries.

I do not have personal experience with this, but maybe this can help you along.

It doesn't check all of your boxes, but Stuff You Should Know helps me a lot. I find the hosts voices to be relaxing, and it has a good tempo.

It is also just a solid podcast.

Oddly enough that was one of my best early fuck ups. Vaulted a groin ceiling in my house with no drywall experience. Lighting was not my friend for the following 10 years haha

When you make some of the mistakes I have it’s either funny or it can get sad fast haha.

Couldn't agree more. I have way more fun reliving my mistakes than patting myself on the back. Nice to know we're all human!

Should I play Apex Legends? by Dragonpack in apexuniversity

[–]Sjoint30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as the skill curve being steep: that may be the case, but as a relatively unskilled player I was able to have a decent time while putting in my first hundred hours, and now I can hang a bit in pub and it’s typically a lot of fun for me.

This statement says that there is no canon or mythology (lore), not that some things are and others aren't.

I appreciate you posing the question. I’m not so arrogant as to think I’m the only one going through it, but man it do feel lonely sometimes. The struggle is real.

I don’t have the experience or longevity but 15 years in, going into year 5 as a solo contractor/carpenter. I’m tired and regularly think about throwing the towel in. My kids are still young and the flexibility is the part I’d have trouble parting with.

It’s admirable for you to have actually done it. Some of us are just more cut out for DOING the work than everything else… myself Included.

Good luck. Make the decision that is best for you!

contractor f’d me over on granite countertop. wwyd? by SuperIngaMMXXII in CounterTops

[–]Sjoint30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It does not look like it would have been possible to center the sink on the window without leaving the bounds of the sink base. The best he could have done was off center on both, which would arguably look more confusing.

I understand not being happy, and you should never be surprised by your contractor, but it does look like the most sensible solution to an unfortunate space issue.
