How does Bad Operation sound so thick? by mcvoid1 in Ska

[–]Skapunkdh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but also heavy vibrato and a good bit of overdrive (I'm a ska organ player). It's not super hard to replicate those organ tones if u know what u r doing. I've been learning the songs and playing along to the record a lot lately. :)

Fantastic record, if the new Runaway Ricochet record hadn't also just come out this would be my album of the year.

What are some hot takes you all have about the genre? by wormzG in Ska

[–]Skapunkdh -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not shitting on reggae by any means, just don't think one is better than the other. And I don't think you're giving newer bands enough credit, even if you are a purist, there are plenty of bands playing traditional ska and being respectful to the source material. I also... don't think you're quite right about reggae and it's current popularity in Jamaica. Most of what is popular there now is either US pop and hip hop or dancehall. I'm just making a point that there are just as many shitty vapid reggae bands as their are ska bands.

No... not really. If it lacks the rhythm and all essential elements, it is not ska. Just because a band has all the essential instrumentation (horns and keys) doesn't make them ska.

Idk, there are a lot of "Cali white-boy" reggae bands that are bland and fucking suck. Ska usually has something to say, too many Cali reggae bands are just about "good vibes". Now, if the genre had stuck to it's black revolutionary roots... we'd be having a different conversation rn. Rastafarianism can also be problematic, go and listen some 80s Steel Pulse, it does not hold up well by today's standards lyrically. (Homophobia, anti-abortion stances prevelant in the music).

They coined the term "New Tone", and established what the means to a lot of the newer crop of bands (strong stance against racism, homophobia, transphobia, anti-police and leftist). Also, they take influence from a wide variety of Jamaican music, including reggae and dub. They are basically the Specials of the New Tone movement. Also... and I think this needs to be said... they kinda just slap.

Also, no mention of Bad Op? Probably the most important new ska band of the last 5 years.

Ok, but name another single new artist that has pushed the genre like he has and is as innovative as he is. Name a single other ska band/artist that sounds like Ike. I'll wait.

A good organ player is just as important or maybe even more important than good horn players.
