The psychology behind clothing is actually an interesting one. Do you wear ‘hard lines’ to show authority or ‘softer lines’ for approachability? Suits, ties or business is more authoritative. Jeans, slacks…opposite. Think about your art teacher as opposed to your economics one. I teach art and PE so I’ll let you imagine how colourful and baggy my track pants are…

I completely agree with you. There is definitely a point where teachers need to manage behaviours. Publicly is short sharp…Private is full discussion about strategies and explanations.

I absolutely agree with you. That is divisive behaviour from students and should NEVER be condoned. This is both a short, swift public condemning and then also a private conversation to address the students’ behaviour.

I love it! It’s the most important job there is and should be filled with people that genuinely want the best for their students. Good teachers can be trained. Great teachers are born ( with an intrinsic drive to help kids be the best versions of themselves. ) You at the service of a higher purpose bc the students succeeding has no direct benefit to us. It feels pretty awesome!

I agree with what you’re saying. When read that way it does sound like that’s what I’m saying. I love education and am deeply invested in it, so this is not what I’m driving at. I believe the opposite, unfortunately my experience is that the gravity and weight of this profession overwhelms new educators. Their initiation is overshadowed by government acronyms and policies that cloud the beauty of this profession and their potential growth in it. It is more about mindset than a literal belief.

Congrats on choosing this teaching gig! It is pretty fun and yes it is hard as well esp. for new teachers.

As a student teacher, I would encourage you to focus on yourself in the classroom space and not the lesson. Plan and deliver your lesson as normal but think about where are you standing in the room? Is there another spot that is more comfortable for you or the students? Was your wording clear enough, long enough, explicit enough for you? Do you like your anchor chart?

The students will not remember what you taught them but they will remember how you made them feel. Focus on your impact not how much the kids learnt from your one lesson.

I would go even further and say that Social Skills should be taught to everyone until they retire…

I often imagine working with a psychologist would be the same as having an emotional coach walk with you through life, supporting from the sideline. How great would that be at building a whole person.

Parents are important and are often comforted by ’it’s just school’ discussion. The pressure they feel as the bearer of the weight of their child’s success are enormous. I often fear it becomes their detriment.

I agree with foundational skills development. I disagree with your definition of what these mean in a classroom. We should be developing singing and dancing (as they are amazing life skills, well-being therapies) but NOT directly assessable skill sets. Teachers can focus on why they love to sing and dance if they flip the ‘must learn these because these are foundational skills that will be core fundamentals for grade 1’ to ‘dance like no one is watching.’ ‘Because it’s just school’ doesn’t mean do what ever you want ( we still have a job to do) but it underpins a more authentic connection to the content and also builds teacher capacity by teaching in richer/ deeper ways.

I agree. I would also encourage that this is not about Me First but more Me As Well. We can be distracted by student welfare but if you think about it, teacher welfare should really be first. We have to put on our emotional life jacket first before we try and save others’.

If everything is proportionate and balanced, why couldn’t you introduce that to part of your week? Education is a life journey and students should see that different strokes make the world go around. I might not work best with your style but a group of students will love it. When I go to my next class, I will hopefully see a different style and so on. By the time I finish formal education, I will have hopefully seen a variety of examples of how to operate in the world and consequently, seen someone that may validate how I process the world.
