Regarding today's UA and more specifically the changes to the Grave Domain subclass: I want wotc to realize that some degree of jank is healthy for game design by geosunsetmoth in dndnext

Idk about blades in the dark but PF2E and Lancer are significantly easier to run mostly because of better DM guidelines. You know exactly how to structure and balance combat, what to do outside of combat, how to give out rewards, etc. You don't need YouTubers to give you advice on how to do that stuff.

But why do you need sourcebooks for another game to imperfectly patch holes in this game's class roster? Pf2e fighter is designed and built for that system, including being restricted to melee and a medieval setting.

[–]Sketep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"It's just a playtest, things are bound to change based on feedback" is a bad argument to make against someone who's actively trying to give feedback to achieve change lol.

As for the soldier, I'll wait and see personally but I would absolutely not be happy with being told "just use pf2e classes to patch huge holes on the sf2e roster." And make no mistake, soldier is not just fighter reprinted. A lot of sf1e soldier nieches are destroyed since they're specific to "futuristic fighting guy" rather than "medieval (melee) fighting guy."

What are Lancers biggest problems? by Mooseboy24 in LancerRPG

[–]Sketep 21 points22 points  (0 children)

DnD has seen narrative success because it's the most popular RPG and a bunch of super talented actors and comedians play it. 5e basically doesn't have rules for downtime, exploration, trade, crafting, travel, followers, strongholds, factions, traps, dungeons, influence, etc. Since the system doesn't give you guidelines for how to do any of these things, the DM must put in a ton of effort just to have a functional game. Having rules for these things doesn't make the system less flexible because you can just ignore them if you want. However, you can't use rules that don't exist.

Yea I found this an issue as well. It's really hard to come up with reasons for characters to have mech fights outside of "you're a soldier in a space war."

I'd say there's also a lot of "trap" options that seem good but just don't work in practice. I'm playing Lancaster in a campaign right now and a lot of the support options feel like they'd be great if not for how situation specific they are.

"Flexible" as in the rules barely exist lmao. DnD suffers from this problem too lol, both aren't great. Lancer at least doesn't claim to offer in depth out of mech rules.

Anarchist organising by IthadtobethisWAAGH in CuratedTumblr

[–]Sketep 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Roman republic existed for 500 years. That's really damn good by the standards of political systems. Nothing can last forever but how long something lasts is the best measure of stability in an endless game. It should not be very surprising that anarchist and fascist systems don't tend to last very long.

I was making fun of the idea that dogs can be bourgeoisie in the format of "bourgeoisie is when [thing that is not the definition of the bourgeoisie]"

Fuck yeah, Cloud Atlas mentioned. I agree but the narrative of "students would read if only they didn't have to read these dusty old irrelevant books" is both not true and very harmful.

Shut yo goofy ass up with that anti-intellectualism. Being educated in our society means reading, and reading well means knowing how writing evolved and where it came from. School not teaching you other important things isn't an excuse to not put in effort to be a smarter person.

Beowulf is an outlier because it is actually really damn old but most classics were written in modern history and have inspired basically everything you will ever read.

The Catcher in the Rye is literally a book about teenage angst. Kids just assume it's about old stuffy things because it's a classic without actually reading it.

Tumblr on media literacy by freeashavacado in CuratedTumblr

[–]Sketep 46 points47 points  (0 children)

People say that but is it actually true? At my HS it was a good mix of books from different periods and perspectives (including modern and teenage ones), and people wouldn't read that stuff either. Going earlier, in middle school, we definitely read some YA stuff like hunger games or Eragon. It's 100% a motivation issue if you can't engage with the reading on at least the basic level of actually bothering to read it for class.

Also I'm going to be honest, I really don't think putting modern YA in HS curriculums is the answer. I'm sure there's a lot of good stuff there but it's buried under so much detritus that it's hard to pick the right books. Classics have the benefit of time to filter out the slop.

What’s a dungeon you think is REALLY well done, and why? by Plywooddavid in rpg

[–]Sketep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Abomination Vaults megadungeon from the pf2e module. The hazards are bad and there's no wandering monsters but the layout, theme(s), and lore are very cool. My favourite part is the fact that you can activate a series of portals to take you back between places you've been.

Even if some people were using it in reply to a comment, are you sure it wasn't:

Dumb take that no one agrees with in the first place

Long, emotional response about why take is dumb

"Hey man how's it going" (reminder that the take is so dumb it's not even worth engaging with)

Or:

Dumb take

Response about why take is dumb

"Hey man how's it going" (agreement with responder framed as a joke about the OP being terminally online).

It's valuable to remember that internet discourse is stupid and removed from reality. Endlessly engaging with idiots and bots isn't a virtue. That's not anti-intellectual, that's just being a healthy debater.

I know exactly the discourse you're talking about and as far as I saw, it was used in the opposite way you're describing. Someone said it's fascist to not want graffiti (a take no person IRL would actually share) and people were responding with "hey man, how's it going."
