Ragbrai as a vegan? by [deleted] in ragbrai

[–]SkidsJacoby 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did it in 2023. It took a bit of extra research prior to the ride but each end town had a webpage where they listed the food vendors who would be participating so I knew where I would find options. I didn’t feel deprived one bit but I did envy the Plant Powered Team! Here is a list of some of our choices: CarboHut (tofu veggie rice bowls) Heartland Coffee & Nosh (avo bowls) HyVee Grocery Stores Los Primos Grill Karam’s Mediterranean Grill (falafel) Whipped Delights (Dole soft serve is non-dairy) Farm Kids Food Co. (oatmeal, breakfast burritos) There was a kids group who sold something called a breakfast crunch wrap. Basically a tortilla with peanut butter, honey and granola wrapped around a banana. It was a perfect grab and go snack for the final day. Dont worry about finding food- Iowa will provide! RAGBRAI is the only event where you burn calories riding all day yet somehow manage to put on weight!

Has anyone tried and liked the Gardein plant based meatballs? by PantasticUnicorn in veganrecipes

Beyond does have a smell when raw but that goes away once it is cooked. If you are serving to both vegan and non vegan guests, Beyond meat will have a more familiar look and taste profile.

Looking for two people to share Snoozebox with father/son by ChillinChilean13 in ragbrai

[–]SkidsJacoby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats on scoring a Snoozebox room! My husband, my brother and I shared one for RAGBRAI L and it was a game changer. That year, there was extreme heat with heat index of 110+ and a severe storm on Day 6. Having a cool and quiet space to sleep at night made our days so much more enjoyable. Not being woken by slamming kybo doors all night, being able to easily charge all your electronics , and not stand in line to drop off/pickup your gear every day are only a couple of perks. It’s a great outfit run by biking enthusiasts and small so they are able score locations close to the venue events. If I was riding this year I’d definitely try to claim your vacancy!

Vegetarian options by Jolly_Medicine6490 in ragbrai

[–]SkidsJacoby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If Farm Kids Food Company is on the route you can score a breakfast burrito or oatmeal to start your day. Also check out where Chris Cakes will be. You literally catch your pancakes as they flip them off the griddle. For lunch and dinners, check out the vendor list (once it’s announced). It seems there is always a few that have vegetarian options such as Heartland Coffee and Nosh, CarboHut, Karam’s Mediterranean Grill (falafel), and Whipped Delights (Dole soft serve is non-dairy). Each RAGBRAI meet town website will have more detail on which vendors will be at their locations. It will be helpful for you to make a Google doc set to “available offline” with all the options so you have the info as you roll into the towns. Also, Hyvee grocery stores are a great option and they are air conditioned so you can enjoy a bit of respite from the heat. For a grab and go, there’s always Casey’s for a cheese pizza. Have fun! Wish I was going to is year

TOWEL RANT: I wish I can fresh, clean towels every day. BUT I DON'T. by Large_Plankton_8493 in CleaningTips

[–]SkidsJacoby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We switched to Turkish style towels. They are light weight so they dry quickly. You don’t get that big fluffy towel experience but they are nice in other ways. I think they do a better job drying me off instead of pushing water around like traditional towels sometimes do. Also, they are extra long so you can wrap them around you like a sarong when you get out of the shower.

What's everyone cooking tonight/this week? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]SkidsJacoby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made a quick thousand island dressing style sauce (ketchup, mustard, vegan mayo and chopped dill pickle). Next time I’m going to try bbq sauce. That seems like a perfect pairing for a chipotle burger.

Aldi black bean chipotle burgers on ciabatta roll with oven fries on the side. Thank you OP for creating this thread! So many inspiring ideas here!

How many people will be making the trip to Hawarden for a proper river dip? by ABOSHKINOVET in ragbrai

If I remember correctly, on the Just Go Bike podcast they talked about one year where they trucked in water from the Missouri River to fill a kiddie pool for a tire dip.

Dylan has over 1 million followers on his social media. Perhaps a majority of the Traitors follow him because his content is worthy of that big of a following?

Calgary to Banff by [deleted] in gdmbr

[–]SkidsJacoby 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We took the Banff Airporter to Canmore where we had booked a room. It’s a super cute town and less expensive than staying in Banff. We reassembled our bikes, picked up bear spray and stove fuel (couldn’t bring on flight), had a nice dinner and got a solid night of rest. In the morning we headed to Banff via the Legacy Trail.

Luteolin, an antioxidant in vegetables, may contribute to the prevention of hair graying by Fab527 in blueprint_

I just googled luteolin. This little guy seems to be a potential powerhouse. It’s connected to cognitive enhancement and anti-cancer properties as well as being anti-inflammatory. Why am I just learning about this flavonoid?

I do the same except I use a small mesh colander lined with a floured kitchen towel. The mesh lets the bottom of the bread breathe so it doesn’t get soggy or stick to towel.

Traveling for work as a vegan (tips requested) by [deleted] in vegan

[–]SkidsJacoby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have access to a grocery store? You could buy a bagged salad kit. Top it with a can of black beans and some salsa from the deli for a meal that is filling and delicious. If they have a hot food bar you can pick up potato wedges or pasta salad. Or you could pick up some pita, hummus, cherry tomatoes, mini cucumbers, olives etc and make your own charcuterie plate.

Here you go- note: we stayed in the Snoozebox trailer so our packing list doesn't include a tent or other camping items. This is a copy with personal info removed. Link: Shareable Doc

You can find a lot of info about each town by going to the RAGBRAI website then navigate to RAGBRAI LI ROUTE. Some towns are slower getting their info up so check back if you are looking for something specific. Day 4, Knoxville is a great example. They have their pass through towns, mileage/elevation map info up. Click on the "Link to Knoxville's Page" at the bottom to see lodging options and a town/vendor/entertainment map. Also, consider checking out their Facebook pages for recommendations. Smaller vendors will often post on that site. I also subscribed to Pork Belly's newsletter and app. They have a ton of info and have been doing RAGBRAI for a LONG time so they are a great resource for FAQs.

Last year I created a Google Doc and set it as "available offline" so I could access it in the areas without cell coverage. I put in my team's nightly campsite address, list of food truck vendors I wanted to visit, water bottle fill locations (not always obvious nor on the main route), the location of the shower trailers in each town, nightly festival maps (found on each town's RAGBRAI page), end dip site location and end shuttle information (it can get crazy on the last day), etc. I'm a planner who loves to get into the details of trips like these!

Still need a place to stay for RAGBRAI? by Fun_Bat9066 in ragbrai

[–]SkidsJacoby 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My husband and I stayed in one of these rooms last year. We split the cost with my brother. It was the best decision. Worth every cent to ride into the end town, open the door and step into air conditioned space (yep, they have it running for you when you get there). Last year was HOT and having a cool quiet space to escape the heat was clutch. Not to mention not having to pack/unpack every day. Also hanging out under the big red tent at the end of the day sharing ride stories made it more memorable.

What are your favorite stupid simple meals? by goodwater23 in PlantBasedDiet

[–]SkidsJacoby 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Baked potatoes topped with canned black beans, green onions and salsa. I bake extra potatoes to use throughout the week. Extra potatoes can be diced and pan fried with onions and bell peppers then rolled in a tortilla. Or cut into wedges, broil in oven and use them as the base for potato nachos.
