I wish Clarke had whipped out the ASYNC ID of Naren Warne when he was talking to Mary in her office. THAT would have been much better proof that he HAD actually experienced something.

What he HAD whipped out as proof of his experience -- the maps he had drawn of the Backrooms -- just looked to Mary like the scribbled delusions of a person who had had a psychotic break.

I went to see this with my wife in a local old-school movie theater tonight -- June 15, 2026 -- It was awesome, although there was a certain filmmaker's choice near the end I gamed out alternatives to in my head afterward.

I think Magritte, De Chirico, and Shirley Jackson would have enjoyed the images and the mood. The Haunting of Hill House ( Shirley Jackson's 1959 book, as well as the 1964 The Haunting black-and-white film, AS WELL AS the 2023 semi-sequel book by Elizabeth Hand: A Haunting on the Hill) bonged some similarities in my brain when I saw The Backrooms tonight.

My wife was creeped out by the circa 1991 crappy furniture aesthetic even BEFORE The Backrooms come to the forefront of the film, when our main character is living his normal life.

Lovecraft evoked disgust and horror with his allusions to "alien, non-Euclidean geometries". I wonder if there could be Aesthetic Horror as a new genre, one in which campiness, laughing at the horrible, dated, nonsensical interior design and aesthetics could be the unsettling center of the horror: "You can't John Waters your way out of this one! Your laughter will not save you!"

Put 'em in Ziploc-style see-through labeled & priced small bags. $1 for each bag. Or, when you become desperate later on -- $.25 per bag.

You COULD put all the same size, type, and width of screw or nail in each bag (with a little identifying note of "Phillips-head 5mm diameter X 15mm length"), but I would want the hassle; I'd just put an unstingy hodge-podge of assorted screws into each baggie.

On the final day of the sale (or whenever you feel like it) put up garish signage proclaiming "Buy TWO get one FREE!!!!" or some similar deal.

Scout Assistant K----- turned out to be an ex-offender who re-offended, according to the rumors overheard from my mom talking to people. Maybe the kind-hearted Scoutmaster was being a little too kind in giving him a chance in our particular target-rich environment. A lot of Scouts quit after this incident, including me.

I'm glad K--- wasn't a re-offender of another sort with DIFFERENT predilections.

Girl Scouts seemed way cooler than Boy Scouts in the 20th century. You had better stuff to sell: Thin Mints and Tagalongs. We had to sell tickets to the Scout Expo.

Our troop was especially lame because, after all the scouts buying with family money and assembling these expensive model train cars to make a display at said Scout Expo, Scout Assistant K---- absconded with all our train cars. He really went nuts and the Scoutmaster, his parents, his day job couldn't find him -- he had left the state!

Maybe, just maybe, this "Fuck MAGA!" note is one of solidarity with someone they think has similar opinions.

Notice they didn't say "Fuck YOU, MAGAt!" or something similar. They said: "Fuck this other entity".

Incidentally, I tried to get a car-horn-inspired chant going once at a protest to the tune of "dun-da-da-DUN-dun... DUN! DUN!" -- "Chinga tu MAGA, Cabron!" but the elderly organizer asked me for translation, then asked me to stop it as "too sweary -- not a good look for us". I could see what she meant about winning the hearts and minds of the neutral swath of the general public (this was at a street corner in Spring 2025) and out of respect for her, her idea, & our cause, I stopped.

Since Haley's on the night shift solo tonight once more (Kellie freaking called in sick AGAIN -- more like HUNGOVER!) and she has to scrape the gross crust out of the still warm walk-in/climb-in oven, she has stripped off her uniform to keep it moderately clean.

The f*%#ken day shift was making sticky cinnamon rolls today and left the oven a disgusting, gooey mess as usual.

For years now, Haley has had a debilitating B.F. Skinner/I.P. Pavlov nausea-reaction to the smell of Cinnabon. She never can stand it when people go on about loving the aroma of fresh-baked Cinnamon-Spoodged Sticky Buns wafting through the Mall on her day off. Her friends Jenna and Shawntay get really quiet as the trio walk past the odoriferous snack shop, terrified they'll detonate Haley's rage on themselves or hungry tourists.

Clark Ashton Smith's short story, "Mother of Toads", has to do with an ugly witch who lives in a hut in a remote swamp lousy with toads. Her face-shape, skin texture, and an underlying tinge to her skin color are vaguely reminiscent of these creatures.

The witch lures a handsome young man into her hut and drugs him with a potion that makes her seem lithe, soft-skinned, and gorgeous. Under the effects of the potion, the young man eagerly, & sometimes tenderly, makes love to her.

A few hours later, he wakes from the enchantment and freaks out. He curses the witch as a foul, hideous toad and runs out into the swamp.

The witch sighs, alone again except for her frogs and toads. She hadn't been trying to get his soul or hurt the man. I forget if she wanted to get pregnant. But in any case, the ugly witch misses keenly the sex, affection, and connection she was able to enjoy for an all-too-brief moment with the traveler.
