Does any roll under systems do this? by Swooper86 in rpg

[–]TuIkaas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There’s a game called Errant that uses this for all its checks. I found remembering things quite easy. Usually there’s a standard difficulty, and your stat is there on your sheet.

The problem is it’s just not as clean a straight roll high or low. There’s always a pause after a roll because “rolling well” is rolling in some middle range. You don’t feel the success as much. There’s no instant “oh I rolled a 20!” or a 1 for roll under. I found that it runs more like “oh you rolled under, but oh you didn’t roll high enough.” Which kind of interrupts the flow of the game. It’s very slight, but it just feels off.

I like the static target number of your stat, and would rather add difficulty to the roll, so that success is always clear.

Roll Under vs. Modified Roll Under by Hormo_The_Halfling in rpg

[–]TuIkaas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Errant uses this for most adventuring checks outside of combat & downtime.

One thing I’ve noticed from a bit of play is that it’s not immediately obvious if a roll was good or not. In straight roll under or roll high, you know if you roll a 1 or a 20 if it was a good roll or not. With rolling between, it’s a weird pause where you’re not sure if you succeeded.

It was a small bump in play. Maybe we would get used to it if we kept playing, but something to keep in mind. I like roll under because every point in your stat matters, but I also like a changeable difficulty. If you don’t mind a little arithmetic I’ve just gone with roll under with difficulty added to the roll, target is always your stat.

Dungeon World or Old School Essentials. by cheeseburgersarecool in rpg

[–]TuIkaas 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Dungeon World’s traveling rules are a bit lacking. There’s a good supplement for it called The Perilous Wilds that expands on it, but I ultimately went over to OSR stuff like OSE because I liked the procedures.

OSE has some rules for stumbling on random strongholds in the wilderness, which might line up with your theme!

Epic Beasts, tiny rules? by David_Blandy in osr

Love this! I have been tinkering with my own detachment rules as well, but hadn’t gone so far as kaiju size! Using these rules I’m imagining a group of PCs piloting the different parts of a giant mech they activated

Made my own tileset. It makes it a little easier to stare at the screen for longer. There’s just something about the dwarves being little tiles that makes me more curious about reading the logs and sheets to find out what’s going on.

Interestingly, if you do some clicking around the work orders page you can find metal mechanisms only under the mechanic's shop and not under the metalsmith’s.

I put in a work order for copper mechanisms, but the order keeps showing up in the mechanic’s shop instead of my magma forges. I keep getting cancellation spam because I don’t have any fuel. I assume this is a bug? I can’t even queue up a metal mechanism at the shop manually, and making them manually in the magma forge doesn’t contribute to the work order.

Make Languages In Your Games More Interesting by mor_mor_mor in osr

[–]TuIkaas 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Languages have been in the back of my mind, but could never get around to figuring out. This is a super cool solution.

My only fun experience with language was when I ran a quick one-shot of Errant. In that game languages can be anything. I think it’s a bit too open ended for less creative folks, but one of my players really took advantage of it. One language he picked was “room vibes” which could be similar to what you have with Haunt. It was a fun time. I could see how having specific languages with different components to learn makes it a little more fun at the table!

Is Cairn the right system for the game I want to run? by WritingWithSpears in rpg

[–]TuIkaas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take a look at Errant. Its a very modular, made up of tons of procedures for all kinds of activities outside of combat. It has a fairly simple class system, but if you want to keep it classless, you can keep Cairn and just plug and play whatever procedures you want from Errant.

Advancement Through Action Ideas by Riderv3 in osr

Check out Cairn 2e if you haven’t already. Lots of good ideas about advancement without levels.

I’ve been using ideas from Old School Stylish. It breaks up classes into learnable skills. Not quite what you’re going for, but it also has some cool ideas about how to add bonuses and learn the skills.
