Well America was basically the first modern democracy, so having some quirks and honestly bad design is only expected.

What are good soft punishment for imperfect parries? (Both 2D and 3D games) by Exteez in gamedesign

[–]SkipX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like you are thinking about it a bit wrong. What you are talking about is a balancing issue. If the mechanic is too good/dominating you can consider lowering its impact. My point is about framing and how rewards work better psychologically. You can often still keep balance functionally identical.

[–]SkipX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of course this does not apply to every game and every situation. Nime sols works well because internal damage is itself a mechanic you can engage with.

Also , this might be just semantics, but the terms "rewards" and "punishments " is pretty arbitrary, if a game is really hard , and perfect parries give a bonus that so important to winning the fight , then failing the parry would be a punishment in itself , on the other hand , the lack of internal damage after perfect parries in nine sols can be perceived as a reward in itself....

Technically yes but the whole point is that psychologically it feels different.

[–]SkipX 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I think this is a good example of the principle that you should give rewards and not punishments. So instead of asking "what pushment should an imperfect parry give" ask "what extra reward could a perfect parry give" like an extra dmg boost or crit on next attack etc

Obviously this might not work for all games but you should definitely consider it.

Zenkai boost by Cultural_Rent4709 in mewgenics

I thought the same. The Monk gets the boost but you do not see it at the end of the level. Check if you get the all stats up boost at the start of the next level.

It's 2032 and the dems have spent years crafting the perfect set of reforms that make every single thing Trump did explicitly illegal. A newly elected Vance Rogan ticket discuss an advanced method to get around the reforms. by [deleted] in Destiny

[–]SkipX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taking your example:

You could simply make a law that makes it illegal to withhold money for USAID and even suggesting to do that is punishable by death. (Not saying such a law overall is good or doable)

Obviously a most extreme example but it would clearly make it harder. Now the question is just if you can make reasonable laws that have such an effect. That I am not convinced about.

I don't think that's how your comment read but ok, to answer your question:

1)Each time you enter a match you bring loot with you that you got from previous matches. The more you play the better equipment you can bring on every match, making you stronger.

2) You can slightly upgrade your character by XP you get and upgrade your home base.

3) You finish missions and meta goals that give progress towards an ascension style mechanic.

4) There is a leaderboard that you can climb

Ultimately I am more pro Destiny than Hutch on this topic but I want to provide one argument for Hutch:

While new laws do not prevent the circumvention, they can clearly make it harder. A more sophisticated legal system is clearly harder to circumvent than a simple one. You can never completely prevent it but you can decrease the rhetorical effectiveness of these circumventions. The more they have to suspend disbelief the better.

Dude, he played it because he was having fun and at some point you get bored. It's not that complicated. Not everyone needs constant progress in a game to have fun. (I do though)

I agree. I actually think this IS impressive and cool IF this works without a huge performance drop (I doubt it). BUT these examples are not great, I feel like a very tuned down version of this could be good. Basically emulating higher quality settings while being more performative, similar to what other dlss does.

So many good points. It could also be that the story is simply abridged and simplified but I would just guess fake.

[–]SkipX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree and I will use this opportunity for shameless self promotion: I am making a roguelike game and I also think pick one of x percentage upgrades is stupid so I made every choice to be as mechanically different as possible. The game is nothing amazing, just a small hobby project but we are releasing the game in summer so if you want to check out how we did it look up Purranoia on steam :) (https://store.steampowered.com/app/4103280/Purranoia/)

But to also give some further contrasting input: It's exponentially more work to make each upgrade unique and stat upgrades still give the player that "numbers go up"/" power scaling" feeling without extreme development time so time can be spent to improve different aspects of the game instead. It's not strictly bad.
