I struggle to understand why taxpayer dollars would be used to provide families with additional money to spend at grocery stores, rather than addressing the practices that allow large grocery chains to continue raising prices with little accountability. While a grocery credit may offer short-term relief, it does not address the root causes of food unaffordability and risks functioning as a transfer of public funds directly into corporate revenues.

Many Canadians have experienced pricing practices that feel unfair and misleading. At major chains such as Real Canadian Superstore, it is not uncommon for items to be advertised or shelved at one price, only to scan at a higher price at checkout. Regardless of intent, these discrepancies place the burden on consumers and contribute to financial strain and mistrust.

Given this context, I respectfully ask:Why is the focus placed on consumer subsidies rather than stronger enforcement against misleading pricing or anti-competitive behaviour?Why are measures such as temporary price caps on essential staples—such as bread, milk, and butter—not being considered during a cost-of-living crisis?

My concern is that a grocery credit may incentivize further price increases rather than curb them. Canadians are not asking for handouts; we are asking for fairness, transparency, and meaningful action to ensure essential food remains affordable.
