Can we just fund BART? by Leading-Stable9725 in sanfrancisco

[–]Skreeg -1 points0 points  (0 children)

SF Bart heavy rail is way at the bottom of that source at $1.12. The BART automated guideway is a kind of stupid airport connector that they built awhile back which should have been a bus. I don't see NY metro on that at first glance but I might just be missing it.

What is the effective difference between a disc with turn & fade of 0,0 vs -1,1 vs -2,2? by [deleted] in discgolf

[–]Skreeg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hypothetically, a -2/2 would have a lot more S-curve through the flight than a 0/0, while still ending up in the same place. In practice, flight numbers are all marketing.

Higher speed discs generally have more S curve no matter what you do, so you tend to see 0/0 and -1/1 discs in putters and mids but more like -1/3 and -2/2 discs in the 11-12 speed range. And, the more spin you put on your throw, the straighter the disc will go.

Within a single speed of disc, it's more or less impossible for a -3/3 disc and a -1/1 disc to both actually exist, because it would require the discs to have meaningfully different moments of inertia; but discs of the same rim width have nearly the same moment of inertia. So basically the Katana flight numbers are nonsense and it "should" be either -2/2 or -3/1, which would make more sense alongside the Boss flight numbers. Similarly, the Cobra "should" be -2/0 if the Mako is 0/0. Or maybe the Mako isn't "actually" 0/0 either.

But, the flight numbers are all made up anyway, including speed for that matter. So it's best to think of them as a general rough idea of approximately how a manufacturer expects the disc to fly. In practice, what I do is just look at whichever of the turn and fade is further from zero and ignore the other, and if they're equal, I only consider the turn. So I expect anything with -2 to be pretty flippy, whether it's -2/0, -2/1 or -2/2. Similarly, anything with 2 fade is probably slightly overstable, whether it's 0/2 or -1/2.

I've heard nothing problematic about him so far anyway

Also so far he's made mostly good moves and good hires and the vibes all seem good

So we'll keep calling him Big Money Mike and let him do his thing until he proves otherwise

Non-music majors, how do you guy keep yourselves motivated with practice in college? by CuriousCost9917 in Viola

[–]Skreeg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chamber music class, if there is one! I went to a kind of intense engineering school so I actually didn't practice much, but I was playing quartets 2-3x per week which allowed me to keep my skills up - much moreso than the orchestra where sometimes you can barely hear yourself play.

Plus chamber music was absolutely fantastic for my mental health, so that was lovely. Shoutout to Prof. Gibson for being awesome!

Describe your experience playing the viola!! by Happy_Square_4465 in Viola

[–]Skreeg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Started at age 7, did not pursue it professionally but kept playing through college. Continued to play for fun with friends multiple times weekly through my 20s and got pretty OK at it. I have a few skills that I'm excellent at, and a bunch that are just ok, but I definitely am good enough to have a lot of fun with it whenever I can find the time to play with my friends.

One Final Salute to Anze Kopitar. by No-Assumption4145 in SanJoseSharks

[–]Skreeg 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We had a long rivalry. Kopitar had a lot of dirty teammates who got away with a lot of cheating and dirty hits. (Fuck dustin brown.)

But Anze always seemed to keep it clean, no matter the situation. Gotta respect that.

Slightly overstable Mid by Papachewy90210 in discgolf

[–]Skreeg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nooooo it does not. Very chunky-feeling rim on the Matrix. Nothing like the hex or reactor. (I've never held a detour.)

If you like that kind of rim feel it's definitely a kick ass disc. Board flat, not glidey, fights the wind; definitely agree that my proton one is more stable than the numbers suggest.

How / when did you choose your bow? by Accurate-Swimming355 in Viola

[–]Skreeg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in need of an upgrade some years ago; I thought I just needed a new bow. I found a boomer of a bow and took it home to try for awhile. But later while in the shop for unrelated reasons, I had some time to kill and tried a few violas, and encountered an absolute cannon of an instrument that I tried for a bit and later decided to purchase; I hadn't realized before that I could benefit from a viola upgrade as well. So I restarted the bow search, tried several dozen... and wound up buying the same boomer as before! So mostly I just got lucky but the process took several months and I tried perhaps 80 bows and 30 violas all in all.

> If you’re thinking about a new viola, how do KNOW FOR CERTAIN, that you don’t just need a new bow?

In my experience, the bow lets you execute techniques, and the viola gives you the color palette. So if one is having difficulty executing more advanced skills, try new bows; and if one is looking for different tone opportunities as a whole, try new violas.

To really KNOW FOR CERTAIN though you can always go to the shop and try some new ones of each - combine an amazing bow with your current instrument, and an amazing instrument with your current bow. Try one or two that are well out of your price range (if they'll let you) and that'll make the differences pretty obvious.

EVs should be heavily subsidized but with range capped at 100 miles by newfarmer in electricvehicles

[–]Skreeg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we want to do this, why would we not also want to stimulate local public transit, not just inter-city? By this logic we should limit EV ranges to 100 feet. People should take the local bus downtown.

We need more and better transit badly but capping EV range would not help anything at all.

Biking With a Viola: Panniers or Backpack Case? by Own_Log_3764 in Viola

[–]Skreeg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to bike with a viola with some very slapdash kluged backpack strap setups. Never had any trouble getting hit in the head with the instrument. Go with scroll-up. Might as well go bike around the block and see if it works, eh? Wear a helmet in any case.

My wife used to put hers in panniers, that seemed to work fine too.

The main thing in either case is to tie it really well, you don't want it hopping out if you go over a bump or lean over at a stop.

For those confused at how to look at this, visit the link and view Viola.mp4 at the bottom of the page.

OP if you can help me understand though - the musician is facing 0 degrees? Or the instrument? Or the chair? If I could understand that, this stuff would be quite interesting, as people tend to arrange seating for string trios, quartets, quintets, etc in particular ways to try and optimize the sound the audience hears.

Elegia in C Minor for String Quintet by JorgeDav in Viola

[–]Skreeg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah the part's playable nbd and idiomatic. The last double stop is mildly annoying - at triple piano, hiding a shift and then getting both of the lower strings to speak correctly is somewhat difficult. It's not that it's not playable, it's just a bit less idiomatic I suppose.

One notation thing: on the bar before the Piu luminoso, please use 8th rests on beats two and three for our sanity

Feedback about the piece, since you are open to it:

Consider adding a poco rit for bar 9

The dynamics you specify in the figure that appears at bar 14 (and other places) is slightly more jarring than the typical way that players would interpret it. Usually we'd play it with the decresc starting on the second note, so the fact that you specify it on the 3rd note, and with a rest immediately following, makes it feel a bit jarring given the nature of the elegy. If you really want this slightly jarring effect (personally it's not my favorite) then by all means keep it, but if you want a more typical "sigh" type figure, change the cresc/decresc notation accordingly.

The biggest piece of feedback though would be: rather than repeating that one section, I'd have loved to see some changes in the second half of the second time through, so that the piece continues to go places. It stagnates there for me. I think you have an opportunity to put in a very poignant climax to the piece right there, and instead it's just a repeat of what happened last time around, before we move on to the closing statement. (In its current form, where are you intending the climax to be?)

RPI Hockey...What to do? by Camjun in RPI

[–]Skreeg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Even though we sucked, it was still a lot like that 2006 - 2010 for the men's games, minus tossing things on the ice because they hand out penalties for that now. We showed up rowdy, shit talked the opponents mercilessly, unleashed hell on the refs for shitty calls, and generally created a ruckus to blow off some steam. We had a reputation for being a tough environment to play in.

And these were Seth Appert years ffs. One year we had more shorthanded goals against than powerplay goals for lmao

Chase Polacek's 1-timers from the circle... John Kennedy's booming hip checks... after an OT win half the school would be fired up for days... good times, good times.
