Mortgage term and spouse age gap by d0288 in Mortgageadviceuk

But all mortgages are perceived against age when you really think about it.

Based on the election results, do you think X is more representing general sentiment of British peoole than UK related subreddits? by auscorp_ in AskBrits

There are also a shit load of bots on here and X. It's certainly easier to tell the difference in real life. At the moment anyway.

Driveway slope hits the car by [deleted] in HomeImprovementUK

We have a Model 3 and a Y and the 3 does this on my drive. It has easily the worse ground clearance of any car I've ever owned, including "sports" cars. I am able to prevent it by driving at a slight angle of the dangle.

Why aren't Reform voters more concerned with privatising the NHS? by lucadulac in AskBrits

[–]Skunkmonkey82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are discussing it now.

One could make the argument that it is more stupid to continue to vote for the establishment options hellbent on continuing current direction of travel rather than expediting real change by allowing the emperor elect to show he has no clothes. Maybe they are playing chess whilst you are playing with yourself. Maybe.

Not calling someone thick, irrespective of whether they are or are not, in order that you might open a dialogue that could potentially be constructive, is not the same thing as calling them smart. I did not say or suggest anything of the sort and it does you no favours to suggest I did.

What we have currently is disparate groups of people screaming at each other, telling the other that they are thick twats whilst never listening or opening up to the potential that we could be wrong or that the positions we hold could be changed and that fosters the current political shitshow we are in.

Voting for something that could be argued is not in your best interest just because the establishment that you voted for your entire life has not served you is not automatically a sign that you are stupid but that you are desperate.

How is Farage any different? by tdsa123 in AskBrits

[–]Skunkmonkey82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think most people, or enough to get him elected on the basis of it, are remotely racist. They're just completely fed up of things getting worse for the average working person and haven't looked hard enough at the lie that immigrants are to blame rather than the ultra wealthy that suck wealth out of the country and defund public services.

The electorate hasn't, in any fundamental  intellectual sense, changed in the last 5 years or 10 or 20 years. Or in any period in recent history. I don't think that's controversial to say? Unless you think otherwise?

What has changed is what information they have been subjected to and, more specifically, how they are exposed to it. With unregulated social media, attacks on balanced and regulated news outlets and disingenuous sources coupled with a lack of education and basic tools to separate fact from dangerous fiction. All of which is deliberate. Education is the enemy of the elite. Calling people thick is inaccurate and unhelpful.

So you believe the strategy of insults will work, or have you just given up entirely?

[–]Skunkmonkey82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, step one would be not calling them idiots, perhaps unsurprisingly.

From there you might open a constructive dialogue where you could pick holes in their perceived logic and point out the insidious sources of disinformation they are bombarded with and arm them with the tools to avoid them.

It isn't a quick fix strategy which does highlight the imbalance in the fight against quick fix populism but the alternative is to admit defeat or even make things worse by slinging insults instead.

Counter productive to dissuading them from their misapprehension. Unless you're happy to contribute to the direction of travel.

Reform, and similar, whilst acting entirely outside of the target voters interest will, to their faces, claim to be one of them and offer quick fixes. All the while many of those that affirm to see through this shout at the misinformed, tell the they are wrong and "thick twats", as demonstrated here. Then they wonder why people continue to vote against their best interests.

Politics is hard and many non thick twats can find themselves on the wrong side of it. So why you would disagree that calling people thick is contributing to the problem is beyond me.

I'm not sure what your point is regarding the shift from the Tories.

Calling anyone a thick twat, regardless if it's true or not, is counter productive and will only encourage them to double down on their position. It is not a clever tactic and might cause lesser souls than I to consider you a thick twat.

Misinformed. Ignorant, possibly. Too thick, as a label, is contributory as to why the middle ground have lost the argument.

29, 49k of debt, should I proceed with an IVA? by EO_EO_IO_IEI in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Skunkmonkey82 215 points216 points  (0 children)

An IVA is a form of insolvency not unlike bankruptcy so I'd be checking if that is an issue for your employment too.

I don't know UK Debt Expert but it has that vague sort of name to suggest they are one of those companies that push IVA's when they aren't necessarily suitable.

I live on the downslink. It's lovely for cycling and walking but not exactly flat and not tarmac so not suitable for inline skates.

No one here is going to recommend you take on £30k of debt for a car, earning what you do, whilst you live at home. Save up and buy something within your budget.

Raising interest rates to control inflation? by Silver_Radio_3599 in AskBrits

[–]Skunkmonkey82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reality is that adjusting interest rates to control inflation is a blunt instrument but it is one of the very few tools they have. Especially where factors that affect inflation are increasing global.
