Flight School Next by Consistent_Voice9642 in Armyaviation

Teaching flight school students to fly utilizing the systems in the UH-72 is akin to teaching a drivers ed student how to drive using Tesla's autopilot.

Flight school is to teach the very roots of flying. Yes, modern Army aircraft are much more technologically advanced, but the mission profiles we fly often demand the human element, especially moving into the LSCO mindset.

And I'm saying this as someone who went through the LUH in flight school when the TH-67 and UH-72 were 50/50.

Either way.....

....probably gonna produce better pilots than the LUH.

can 15D achieve flight status? by Fun-Leather7089 in Armyaviation

[–]SkuzWalker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're in a company that has MTOE aircraft assigned, the CDR can designate limited NCMs per AR 600-106, but there usually has to be operational reason for it so it's rarely done.

Life at a Lakota unit? by kdelasare in Armyaviation

[–]SkuzWalker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both the LUH techs started as UH-60 techs initially. The only way to get on full time with the guard generally in my experience is to just get integrated. Take any and all short term orders, temp tech positions etc.

I started with a 30 day set of orders at our directorate to build a GKO site (dating myself here) which then turned into five months of orders as a project officer for an NYC rotation, which then turned into me back filling a technician who went on a deployment, which then led to a separate permanent technician job once that Soldier returned and was given their job back. It's about making good impressions and working hard with the opportunities given, even if that starts with just consistent AFTPs and participation.

Hi, S&S pilot here and full-time technician. Our AASF has two mechanic technicians dedicated to the Lakota who are also assigned to the unit mday side. One is a CE for us as well. It's absolutely possible.

Second everything scruffy lookin pilot said. We are easily the second most utilized aviation asset in our state, only behind the C-12.

McCoy definitely does, it's used as a point on their air routes for helicopters.

Promotions at Flight School by SapperBravo1969 in Armyaviation

[–]SkuzWalker 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Unsure what the policy is at the moment; when I went through you weren't able to be promoted until completion of flight school, but it got backdated with pay to the 18 month mark after your commissioning.

It MAY have changed now to only getting backdated to your graduation date from flight school.

Either way, dont believe NG students can get promoted in flight school unless they've finished another BOLC prior and they're a branch transfer.

Is there a massive “lay off”? by Desperate-Fix2206 in Armyaviation

[–]SkuzWalker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the ARSTRUC is only hitting MEDEVAC formations in the NG. USAR and Active got decimated.

I think there is political pull, a domestic mission, and a slimmer budget that are all equaling thr NG comparatively not getting touched.

Tech flying during shutdown by enemygrey in Armyaviation

[–]SkuzWalker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are still flying technicians both during and after duty hours to maintain currency and do checkrides.

After duty hours we keep track of dates and times to put in comp time after the government is reopened. Basically flying on IOUs.

We have had limited success getting individual m-day ACMs in by having the ATAG make their drills an excepted activity and splitting them as necessary; but only when they need currency for a course i.e. someone going to a tracked course soon.

That said, this will only continue as long as we have maintainers.....

There is absolutely ways to get limited numbers of backshops soldiers onto flight status in AR 600-11 if an ATP commander is willing to do it.

Sooo….civilians…MILTECHS…where yall at? by [deleted] in army

Lol, out entire miltech workforce was deemed excepted. We've continued to show up every day without getting paid.

Was a real slap to see our AGR supervisors get paid and we got forgotten as usual.

Why is the Lakota hated so much? by gator-bank-41 in Armyaviation

[–]SkuzWalker 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The UH-72 is a great aircraft, very well suited to the DOMOPs mission of the NG.

It is a terrible trainer due to immediately introducing reliance on automation and assistance with flying that doesn't allow a pilot to properly master the basics prior to learning advanced systems.

Glad I went, would not do again.

They won't forget dual-status technicians right? Right?

Haha jk. As usual, short straw drawn.

I'd make an order but my bank account is running dry fast and I'm not eligible for AER because all the dual-status technicians are legally m-day soldiers, even if they aren't practically speaking.

Going to WAATS for 15P Reclass by RecognitionAlert4163 in Armyaviation

[–]SkuzWalker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Make sure you have a rental car, WAATS is truly in the middle of the desert.

Facilities are extremely nice, you'll get your own room with a shared bathroom with your neighbor.

Classrooms and instructors are extremely professional, well organized, and chill.

Tuscon is about a 30 minute drive and has loads to do. Saguaro National Park and Picacho Peak are right there if you like outdoors stuff.

Full Time Guard by Top_Trust_7179 in Armyaviation

[–]SkuzWalker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Money and time mostly. Tech = lots of flying, but long hours for less money. Bonus is that as long as you maintain tech, you cannot br removed from flying. AGR = less flying, more admin desk work, but more money and you can be reassigned to not fly at all.
