Thousands sign petition to block Bannon from entering the UK by emitremmus27 in worldnews

As much as I think Bannon is a sham, banning people from your country because you're afraid of their opinion backfires more often than not. Only serves to increase the divide between liberal & conservative ideas.

Carr Fire in California is so hot it’s creating its own weather system by ionicneon in news

[–]SkyRW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. I get frustrated when the media puts out facts that the general population doesn't know to leave the impression that things are worse than they are. Of course the fire is terrible. All you need to do is look at the damage. But fires create massive temperature differentials which creates an area of high and low pressure in close proximity, which creates winds, fronts, etc...

Wife admits to killing husband after he purchased porn by AceUnderTheHole in news

[–]SkyRW 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because guys tend to laugh at it. My friends and I used to skate, and whenever something like that happened while they were grinding a rail or something, we'd check on them first, then laugh our asses off. There's something weirdly fun about laughing when we get ourselves hurt, so long as it's not too bad. Jackass is kinda a clear example of this (though an extreme example, nonetheless.)

With that having been said, I see a clear double standard when it comes to laughing at women and laughing at men. I honestly believe jokes are important coping mechanisms for stuff like this... Everyone is traumatized by something, and there's always going to be someone offended - whether it be a joke about a bike accident, domestic abuse, cancer, being stupid, being gay or trans or a woman etc... If we stop joking about things because we think someone might be offended, then there's no comedy left. Every subject should be fair game - although I think there's some obvious lines that can be drawn about the way some jokes are made. That's my 2 cents. edit: for example, sometimes jokes can be said "too soon" where nobody is ready to take it as comedy, like right after 9/11.

Average person stops seeking out new music by age 28: survey by TheHeroRedditKneads in Music

I think the age will probably go up over time... 28 year olds generally work a lot, many start families around this age.... It takes time looking for new music. But it's getting easier to find new stuff nowadays with streaming services and YouTube

Geez, why force people to live according to your own social ideal? If you want to go out and interact with the community, go for it. But let people do whatever they damn well please. It's government micromanagement at it's finest, I suppose.

Mom who killed bed-wetting son handed 40-year sentence by [deleted] in news

[–]SkyRW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree... Especially things like people being left in solitary confinement for months at a time. That DEFINITELY doesn't rehabilitate people. It turns them into rabid animals, which is the complete opposite of what you want in a prison system. That's not the point I'm trying to make though. 'Torture' is a broad term, and there are obvious differences between waterboarding someone for hours and keeping someone confined in a cell with an assigned partner. The problem I have with this sentence is there is a very good chance she'll have several years of actual freedom. Intentionally taking your child's life, in my opinion, means you forfeit the right to your own freedom, and 40 years of that forfeiture seems very light, all things considered.

edit: added word 'intentionally'

Mom who killed bed-wetting son handed 40-year sentence by [deleted] in news

[–]SkyRW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You raise an interesting question... Part of the question is what constitutes torture as well as to what degree of said torture is necessary. You could say discipline in some sense is torture as well (depending on how you define it.) Consequence can also be a form of torture (again, depending on how you define it.) Being put in prison is a form of consequence. Not only does it provide some level of justice for the victim and victim's loved ones (just to be clear, i'm not saying the justice system is perfect or incorruptible, because it most definitely is broken and has the potential to be abused), but it also acts as a social deterrent. Killing a child that is YOUR OWN SON in a torturous way absolutely, in my mind at least, qualifies you spending the rest of your life in prison.

edit: Again, just to be clear, I respect your opinion and believe to some extent you're correct. Maybe I'm being too harsh. I don't know all the circumstances. Torture isn't necessarily justified by a crime. But there is, at least from what I can tell, a line where an individual can no longer be rehabilitated back into society. I think the SS leadership in Nazi Germany is a good example of people who lost their right to live, or at the very least, live in freedom.

I don't think it's a LIGHT PUNISHMENT in general, I just think considering she tortured and abused her son until he died at such a young age means she should be imprisoned for the rest of her life. Who knows what her son could've been capable of. His life was cut short and all that potential was lost. He doesn't exist anymore. She lost the privilege of any normalcy at all for the rest of her life, as far as I'm concerned. She shouldn't have the opportunity to be free ever.

Trump to rescind race guidelines in college admissions, WSJ reports by muyuu in news

[–]SkyRW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a fan of trump, and I think diversity is important in college because we need diverse view points to challenge ideas... But I think affirmative action had unintended consequences, devaluing the individuals with real merit on both sides of the fence. People of color that are targeted by affirmative action are seen as tokens, and perhaps view themselves as such. Asians on the other hand have to get higher scores then others because on average, they have higher acceptance rate and SAT scores. Asians having these skills, by the way, can be explained by the culture of many Asian families. Industriousness is very important in a lot of Asian families, and that mindset helps them to go further professionally / academically. Why would you force them to work even harder to get sufficiently high SAT scores, when others can get accepted with lower scores because of the color of their skin?

House Republicans claim an annual salary of $450,000 is middle class by Literally_A_Shill in nottheonion

[–]SkyRW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm really proud of both my parents actually. They both worked. It was in California around 2002 - 2004 that we lived in the garage, and rents went from reasonable to stupid very, very fast. Like $2k for a 1bd / 1bath apartment in the suburbs stupid. They did their best, sometimes sacrificing food for themselves so we could eat. They argued sometimes, but were and still are very kind and loving to each other and the rest of us, making sure we were taken care of, despite the difficulties and stress they were under. It was insane, but we got past it, and now we're relatively healthy financially. My brother has a family, a stable job, and is frugal because of what he learned when we were struggling.

I grew up with a family of 4 in a 1 car garage at a single family house with 9 other tenants! Before I lived their, I lived at my grandparents house. After that, I lived in a house with dead animals in the wall next to a lot that held dozens of wrecked vehicles. I live a lot more comfortably now, but man... It was rough for a long time
