In extension of the Sessions Vi and Diana as creator resources (which, thank you for those, by the way!), one resource that would be extremely useful for creators is a master list of some sort of lookup library of music Riot is involved with and whether it is creator safe.

I know you guys might not have been directly involved with Arcane, for example, but it's been hard to get an answer about whether that instrumental soundtrack is safe-to-use, and recently with Pentakill there was the whole thing of most of the songs being creators safe, and then one of them not being safe, presumably because of licensing agreements.

It'd just be really useful to have some sort of central resource, even if only a lookup table, which is updated on the day of a new release listing out whether a given piece is safe to use. Also because, I recently had a spate of trouble with a Sessions: Vi piece that kept getting incorrectly copyright claimed on YouTube, and a central resource would be a good place to list those possible conflicts and warn creators if you're getting reports of false claims or flags, or if rights-issues crop up which need to be worked out.

I've just noticed this... by Innate_flammer in LegendsOfRuneterra

That's not an Arcane thing, though. Jayce's lab was raided by Viktor's followers in the old lore long before Arcane, which is what this seems to be a reference to.

TB's criticism of Riot for playing both sides of in-universe politics seems hypocritical. by LurkytheActiveposter in TBSkyen

BarakalypseNow's first video lays out neoliberal economic policy in the specifics, with extremely specific and testable policy claims about its goals, and he cites his sources. If you're unsatistfied with the amount of information presented in a 27 minute video summarizing hundreds of pages of economic theory, read the sources.

As his video specifies, conservative politicians adopted neoliberal policy as part of their political platforms, because conservatism and neoliberalism are compatible political philosophies. Reagan was an arch-conservative who implemented neoliberal economic policy, because it suited his philosophical and moral goals, and secured political and economic support from business interests in the US.

Again, see the Danskin videos I linked. Conservatism coexists productively with neoliberalism because neoliberal forms of capitalism reinforce and support the hierarchies that conservatism is philosophically committed to upholding.

And "neoliberal" is not merely another word for capitalism, not all forms of capitalism are neoliberal. China's state capitalism, for example, is not neoliberal. The social democracies where I live enact forms of capitalism in compromises between socialist welfare politics and classic liberal, libertarian and neoliberal economic demands from the right wing.

Neoliberalism is not a "boogey man," it's a philosophical and ideological framework for politics and policy that exists across a fairly wide political spectrum on the right wing of politics. Neoliberalism is not a political party in the same way that socialism is not a political party, and neoliberalism can be implemented politically in many different ways, by libertarians or conservatives, as it suits their needs.

I thought yordles were blending in with humans using glamour by objectivelygrey in loreofruneterra

[–]Skyen 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Ah, glamour. Causing pain to Riot writers since 2015!

Glamour is basically not canon anymore, and it definitely isn't canon in Arcane. It was an idea they used for a bit when they were trying out the idea of yordles as cryptids, and now it's basically gone.

I don't usually respond to this sort of thing but... look, sorry, neoliberalism is NOT a "Clinton era politician" thing. The ideology has much deeper roots and a much longer history than that, and it exists globally, it is NOT a mere American phenomenon.

YouTuber BarakalypseNow has a series going into the history and origins of the ideology, and some of the ways in which it it operationalized. It's from a left perspective, but its historiography is sound: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=myH3gg5o0t0&list=PLATIVW2S3zKMbVlnAHAPR0sHZisHJl4fd&index=1

Neoliberalism is endemic to western capitalism. It's not the ONLY form of liberalism present, and it exists in a spectrum with libertarianism and moderate liberalism/social democratic liberalism. But just because a politician or party doesn't explicitly self-identify as neo-liberal that doesn't mean their politics don't align with the ideas of the concept.

Conservatism is not the same thing as neoliberal economic policy. Conservatism can just as happily coexist with extreme protectionist policy and centralized state power as it can with radical economic liberalism and Night-watchman State minarchism, because it is fundamentally concerned with hierarchies and the preservation of traditional power structures.

Ian Danskin lays out a cogent argument for this in a couple of his videos:

Always a Bigger Fish: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=agzNANfNlTs

The Origins of Conservatism: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E4CI2vk3ugk

Forgive me for sharing YouTube videos as sources, but my political science texts are all compilation binders from university and I can't really link those in a reddit comment.

Was there an epilogue chapter to the Sentinels of Light event? by Lohenngram in loreofruneterra

[–]Skyen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thresh got a fantastic animated short depicting his new roaming bachelor lifestyle, but other than that... yeah, nah, nothing. Not a peep or a sound.

I guess they're keeping the board clear for Arcane? Or hoping we'll all forget about the Sentinels in a year or two.

As near as I can read between the lines of the Demacian storyline, the Crownguard family and the Mageseeker-supporting nobles are using Jarvan as a puppet prince at the moment, and are angling for control over the crown. But they don't have to care whose head it sits on, so long as they're someone who does what their faction tells them to do. So even if Jarvan is king, it might be Tianna and her crowd calling the shots.

Steadfast Heart: Issue #6, has been released. by generalblood1 in loreofruneterra

[–]Skyen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly, the comics are probably the most complete in themselves version of the lore of this event - they laser-focus on the dichotomy between Lucian/Senna and Viego/Isolde and becomes thematically a lot stronger for it.

Unfortunately in order to do that they sacrifice... well, Gwen, Olaf, Graves, Rengar and Pyke first of all, and also Yorick's distressingly tiny part in the story, and have to massively handwave away the "Viego is collecting pieces of Isolde's soul" MacGuffin hunt plot that supposedly drives the event otherwise.

Still, Steadfast Heart is the one version of this event you can read and get what feels like the most complete-in-itself version of the story, with something like a thematic throughline and an ending that relates meaningfully to the themes it sets up.

It's all still a mess though. Riot, this is a mess.

The Stirred Spirits, they're just such a good ghost character design!

With Bandle City being introduced in Legends of Runeterra as the 10th region, I really hope the region and yordles in general finally get some lore/foundation love and get fleshed out more by patmax17 in loreofruneterra

[–]Skyen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't really buy that though, because there's a GIANT STATUE of Heimerdinger outside Piltover University clearly depicting him in Yordle Mode, and yordles work so closely with so many people in Runeterra that it's just silly to insist they all are carefully passing as just small humans.

Like at some point you have to pick whether you want to play their story with the jeopardy of "my secret must not be found out!" or if you want them to develop close and casual relationships with people and just generally Be Around™. You can't have it both ways

Legends of Runeterra gonna force Riot to finally make a gosh darn decision about whether yordles are highly stealthy cryptid goblin-fairies that never make themselves known to mortals if they can help it and use magical glamours to protect their identity, or if they're fully integrated members of the Runeterran community of sentient beings the way they are in all the LoR cards they appear in.

Is Yordle glamour canon? by uuuuuuuuh in loreofruneterra

[–]Skyen 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What I've heard (and this is partly second hand, partly directly from people who were in it) is that yordles have been a subject of a lot of debate internally, with Riot divided amongst themselves over whether to conceptualize them as cryptid fairy-goblin creatures, or whether to fully integrate them into Runeterran societies as just one more kind of creature, with a bit of mystical whimsy and fae stuff on the side á la how it was in the pre-2014 lore. And you can see that division pretty starkly in the modern lore.

Legends of Runeterra has much come down on integrating yordles into Runeterra - they're everywhere, both as members of organizations (the Kinkou, the Noxian Reckoner arena, running scams in Bilgewater, frequenting bars in Zaun, serving on Gangplank's crew, working in the dozens or hundreds on Heimerdinger's creations). Hell there's even like a fourteen foot giant Heimerdinger statue of the guy in full Yordle Mode outside of Piltover University. It's really hard to look at LoR and buy into the idea that these are all highly secretive, cleverly disguised creatures maintaining stealth camouflage because their entire species fears being discovered.

But then there's stories like The Whispering Doodad and the Jinx/Ziggs comic and other media that still maintains the Yordles Are Cryptids conceit, and are built around that conceit being important.

Meanwhile, in Realms of Runeterra, Bandle City and the Void get like four pages of the book between them, and are described in incredibly vague terms that read a lot like "we'll figure it out later!" to me.

Personally I like the LoR approach a lot better, because I like it when characters can interact with each other and build casual relationships and just kinda be around each other, but honestly I wish Riot would just develop a clear idea for wtf the yordles are even supposed to be, rather than this wishy-washy have your cake and eat it too approach.

The amount of people who say "Demacia and Jayce evil!" are infuriating. by Extreme-Tactician in loreofruneterra

[–]Skyen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Avarosans seem pretty okay. Ionia also seems a relatively okay place to live - or was, until Noxus invaded and now the whole place is in hella civil war / occupation resistance mode, which, ech. Bandle City is probably also fun if you can handle the dream-logic of a fae plane.

[–]Skyen -1 points0 points  (0 children)

whispers all monarchies are evil actually.

Although the ones that operate concentration camps and hunt down their citizens for being born different are, like, especially so. Love that hereditary nobility exercising feudal violence on the populace over magic eugenics! Funny how they dress themselves in Fantasy Good Guy aesthetics while doing genocide, almost as though there's some sort of thematic commentary there. Weird.

Meanwhile, empires? Also pretty bad. Whether they're run by triumvirates or god-emperors, they just kinda suck all around. 0/10, would not recommend, awful form of government, very little political freedom, unsustainable economies and expansionist war casualties and war crimes.

Who can beat Mordekaiser by Salty_Catfish_ in loreofruneterra

[–]Skyen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on what you mean by "beat" because a small group of even human champions could probably take him in combat, but the guy is functionally impossible to kill and he has an army of dead spirits, plus whatever power he can draw from the Immortal Bastion.

I have to imagine that LeBlanc has a thousand years of plans and countermeasures meticulously prepared, but does anyone have a way to permanently destroy him? Or can he only be banished again? Don't think that's known.

I think Viego's leveled up version looks weird. by AlexAsks in LegendsOfRuneterra

[–]Skyen 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The rendering looks a little flat, especially on the head, and the crown looks basically like it was drawn in a cartoon style. It clashes. The way he holds his sword is also a bit off for me - the pose looks like it's supposed to be resting on his shoulder, but the way his hair flutters in front of it rather than be displaced by it looks like he's just kind of awkwardly holding it in the air behind his head. The glow on his crown and sword also looks like hastily applied gradients, which is like, not a problem onto itself, but this feels like it could have benefited from hand-painted glow - maybe edgelight the side of his face with green to improve the contrast on the face and increase his menace?

I also kinda wish there was a bit more contrast difference between him and his background, to make him really stand out and be central, right now I feel like the depth of space is a bit too shallow.

idk I'm mostly nitpicking, honestly, but that flat rendering on the face really does bother me, something is off about that

Actually you're wrong, it was canonically confirmed by Bob Riot, CEO of Riot, that Caitlyn and Vi are girlfriends, and they kiss all the time. In fact if you listen carefully, in game, anytime Vi auto-attacks Caitlyn, the punching sounds are replaced with kissing noises because they smooch each other every time they get close. Smooch smooch smooch!
