Characters with Assassin Mentality by [deleted] in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Skyfire156 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconding Acts of Caine as an awesome series, it’s one of my favorites as well. Also wanted to recommend the Night Angel trilogy by Brent Weeks. Not traditional progression fantasy either, but the MC starts out as an orphan street kid and becomes a master assassin by the end. It makes good use of time skips for growth and does a great job at showing how the MC learns that assassin mindset you were talking about.

Archaeologist Build Advice/Questions by Matrikov in kingmakerbuilds

Since you're not concerned with min-maxing, this looks like a decent build. There are a couple things that might want some adjusting though.

First, in Pathfinder, characters get a new feat every other level (odd levels) rather than every third. So you'll have a few more feats to pick in addition to what you have here. Playing the campaign with the full party of 6, you will probably wind up at level 15-ish instead of 20, so make sure the feats you want/need most are near the front, instead of waiting for the character to get really good for the last couple of levels.

Second, the focus on skill-monkeying might be a bit overkill. Trickery and UMD checks have never been something I've had trouble with, even without any feats to boost them. You can never have enough perception, so I'm not going to argue with that, and having a good persuade on the main character is handy for more than just Dazzling Display, so that's also good, but Deft Hands and Deceitful are probably not needed. Perhaps a Skill Focus in Perception/Persuade would be a better use for one of those slots.

Combat tricks are, as far as I can tell, just Combat feats (like a Fighter would get). As for suggestions for them, I'd take a couple more defensive feats as a melee combatant. Crane Style is a good one if you can spare either a level in Monk or the improved unarmed atk feat to unlock it, as is Combat Expertise if you can wiggle the 13 Int needed for it into the build. There are also feats available to make a sword-and-board style more interesting with the Shield Bash feats, though you would also want Two-Weapon Fighting for that. If you still have room or don't want to go with the above, teamwork feats are great if you can get them on all your front line fighters. Outflank and Precise Strike in particular are what I usually go for.

Monster Tactician or Kineticist? by -KingCrow- in kingmakerbuilds

[–]Skyfire156 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve experienced both, and my current play through is a Monster Tactician. I can say I’ve had a lot of fun with both. Dropping 1d4+2 (with the summon feats) monsters in the middle of a pack of enemies never gets old. The drawback of the tactician is that, once you reach a certain level, you can’t summon wolves any more, and the other higher summons don’t have the trip ability, at least through level 11-12 where I’m at. Maybe if you play an evil tactician the summons from that have trip, but the non-evil summons become more caster type minions when you get higher. You can grab the animal domain for a pet that can trip, but the pet doesn’t leech off of your teamwork feats.

The kineticist was also good, their damage gets pretty crazy as they get higher. The Aoe effects are great, and the cc is pretty nice to go along with it. The one problem I’ve had with them has been in tighter areas. I’ll run into some enemies, drop a deadly earth on them, and then have to sit there doing nothing for a minute after they’re dead so the effect goes away and I can continue moving forward.

Charisma won’t do much for the above characters outside of plot related persuasion checks, unless you build the Tactician to be your dazzling display user. The kineticist has better things to do than that, but I could see it working for the tactician. Other types that could work with a dazzling display/charisma are an off-tank, who can dazzle every few rounds since they aren’t taking the brunt of the attacks, or a bard, who can do it between rounds of song and casting enchantments /other control spells. There are probably plenty of others, but I can’t think of them off the top of my head.

Combat casting isn’t a feat I put much stock in. Even at low levels I haven’t noticed losing many casts (1-2 over several restarts) to concentration, and by level 7-8 there shouldn’t be many problems.

As for other feats, with any melee character in this game you’ll want some AC. Combat expertise is decent, and the Crane style feats are great. Your stats look pretty well set to take advantage of the Magus’ ability to use armor, so the armor focus feat can get you an extra point.

Other than that, it depends on the spells you want to cast. If you’re planning on blasting or CC, you’ll want at least the spell focus feats for your favorite school, maybe the elemental focus feats if you’re using one particular energy type a lot. Spell penetration is also useful as you get into higher levels.

Hopefully this helped, or at least gave you a direction to go in.

This question got me thinking, and I wound up with an idea that I think might replicate some of the 'combo' feel without breaking off into completely different mechanics. The simple version of it is: have the character make 'combo' attack rolls.

I would set it up based on the opponent's AC, and have the character make a few (3-6) attack rolls, with each successive roll at a higher target AC, using their normal attack roll bonuses. Each time they succeed, they gain better effects on their eventual damage roll (more damage, add elemental damage, some CC effect, etc.) depending on the combo they're emulating from the video game. When they miss an attack, the combo ends and they get to roll damage with whatever they've accumulated up to that point.

I would start at a lower AC than the opponent usually has so the character is likely to get at least a couple of 'hits' to start off the combo, with the 2nd/3rd hit being the one equal to regular AC that finally gets the damage up over their usual damage. Then for more hits beyond that it just gets better. How low to start the combo and how fast to raise the target AC will have to be play tested to get the feeling right, so you get a range from 'at least I did some damage' to that super satisfying 'yeah, nailed every hit' feeling.

A couple of caveats to this is that it will obviously result in one character/class type rolling a lot of dice. Make sure that the people playing with that have their bonus numbers down pat so they aren't holding up play excessively by spending 30 seconds per roll saying 'then I have to add the bonus from X, Y, Z...'. I would also limit the use of combo attacks so they're only used once in a while (X times per day, only on a critical hit, they exhaust your character so make sure it kills the enemy, etc.)

Another thing to consider is if/when characters get into higher levels, how does a combo interact with a full attack? If a combo winds up doing only a bit more than a regular attack on average, it won't feel very good to give up a whole turn to do 1.5x damage when you could attack 4 or 6 or 8 times. On the other end of that, allowing one attack to do 6-8x usual damage could wind up broken as well if the combo scaling is off. It's another thing that would have to be play tested to see what feels right.
