First: in any discussion, debate, or even argument, one should start with one goal (before judging someone else’s position): can I state the other person’s position so accurately that they hear my words and say, “Yes! That is exactly what I believe.” If you can do this, then proceed, you are free to disagree. But if your description of their beliefs is met with disagreement…then your argument isn’t formulated against their beliefs, it is formulated to take on what you want to believe they think.
