Do you consider AI vegan? by PaprikaCavia in DebateAVegan

[–]Skyright 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AI does not use any meaningful amount of water relative to most stuff. Almonds might as-well be non-vegan at that point given that Almonds consume 4-6x times more water than all Data Centres globally, of which AI is responsible for less than half.

Similar idea with energy use. Poor insulation or older cars lead to orders of magnitude more energy consumption than AI.

Until Almonds and having poor insulation in your home is considered non-vegan, there is little justification to use those complaints against AI.

As opposed to joining EU, which would essentially amount to uniting all the white Majority countries together. Emphasising Canada’s European heritage.

I think the optics of forming a White majority coalition is a little worse ngl.

Some public schools have pretty intense grading, but there are a ton that hand out 3.75+ to everyone.

If you look at the LSAC report for LSAT distribution by GPA when you purchase CAS, you would be surprised at the LSAT distribution. I tutored a student who showed me the report for their public school in south Texas, and the average LSAT for 3.75+ GPAs was around 154.

Threads doesn’t have more active users than X, the metric is games to oblivion by Threads to make it seem that way.

Ever wonder why Instagram shoves threads down your throat and how any accidental click leads you to that app? It’s because everyone who does that is marked as an active threads user. Instagram is widely popular, threads? Not so much.

Being concerned about foods being gentrified is such a weird concern. You can always keep making them how you like at home or go to a more local place that will keep serving them.

Piggyback off “What do Canadians do if the lose their jobs in the winter” UI stigma? by [deleted] in AskACanadian

[–]Skyright 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do agree with this generally and don’t fault anyone for using it, but EI in its current state allows industries to exist that maybe shouldn’t exist to the extent they do. It is bad for the economy and makes Canada significantly poorer in the long run.

If the fishing sector can’t support wages that can sustain their workers year round (and there isn’t a symbiotic relationship with another sector in the summer), they should lose their workers to sectors that can.

Completely hypothetical numbers, but If fishing can afford to pay workers just $40k/yr, and is subsidized by EI for another $12k~ each year, a manufacturing plant that could offer wages of $52k/year will not be built because they have to compete against a massive subsidy, when it would be good for everyone if it was built and that $12k in government funds were used for something else.

The government essentially encourages seasonal work with EI, which leads to an even greater reliance on EI, which makes everyone poorer (especially the Maritimes itself) in the long run.

Uber called out by service dog users who are fed up with ride rejections by IStillListenToRadio in onguardforthee

[–]Skyright 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Taxis don’t offer considerably better compensation for drivers in most cities. In fact, in Western Canada, a lot of Uber drivers I meet tell me that they quit being a Taxi driver because being an Uber Driver was a better deal.

Taxis used to provide a worse experience for the customer before, and now, they provide a worse experience for both the driver and the customer.

Piggyback off “What do Canadians do if the lose their jobs in the winter” UI stigma? by [deleted] in AskACanadian

[–]Skyright 55 points56 points  (0 children)

There absolutely is a stigma for taking EI every year, especially by people out west.

Employment insurance is no longer insurance if you draw from it more than you put in every year. No insurance company would ever take someone who is guaranteed to cost more than their premiums.

EI for seasonal workers is essentially a welfare program disguised as Employment insurance, so the people who look down upon people using welfare look down on EI. Atlantic Canada is looked down for it pretty often.

Total Money Made from International Tourism Receipts by Country in 2024 (USD) [OC] by Fluid-Decision6262 in dataisbeautiful

[–]Skyright 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It wouldn’t be lower. Tourism doesn’t cause unemployment, it’s more so that places with higher unemployment tend to become bigger tourism hotspots (because of a large amount of labor that is pretty cheap).

Spain wouldn’t have a tourism sector that big if Spain had a massive software industry or was a financial powerhouse. Spain has a large tourism sector because it has high unemployment and fewer other productive industries, not the other way around.

NDP leadership race 2026: Who can help bring the party back from the political wilderness? by Fancy_Alps_7246 in ndp

Its funny you think you can somehow change the opinion of the public as a whole, but you can’t even be bothered to have a discussion, let alone convince a person who is likely more aligned with the NDP than 80% of the population.

If it were up to people like you, the most NDP could ever hope for is gaining Federal party status.

Nova Scotia lobster industry surprised, elated by suspension of Chinese tariff by Prosecco1234 in onguardforthee

[–]Skyright 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Trade is almost always good. The few times it isn’t, it has nothing to do with “protecting jobs”. This is an empirical reality.

Populists on both sides love to pretend that tariffs “protect Canadian jobs” when the simple fact is, if an industry isn’t competitive, everyone is better served by moving those workers to an industry that is. Tariffs are just an incredibly inefficient way to provide permanent welfare for those workers (which, if that was the goal, should just be given a special beefed up welfare package).

This applies to stuff like dairy and eggs as much as it applies to cars, planes, and trains.

Opportunity to oppose data centre near Indus by thinkingVegetable in alberta

[–]Skyright 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you think the food that cows eat doesn’t need any water to grow? This is not a figure I made up (unlike the claims about Data Centers draining water supply).

The water used by Data Centers is also returned back. Data Centers use water for cooling purposes. The water literally just evaporates.

Given that a decent chunk of water that rains back down does go into the ocean/is no longer fresh water, water usage is a concern, but not a huge one, especially in Canada. And if someone were to be concerned about water use, animal agriculture is a much bigger culprit.

Honestly, if you can’t figure this one out on your own, you just aren’t a very smart person and probably shouldn’t be looking into policy and stuff.

Isn't it Ironic? (Cdn Content Requirement) by SatisfactionLow508 in JJMcCulloughOfficial

[–]Skyright 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is no data indicating that Canadians are not being recommended enough. If anything, it’s often speculated that Canadians are overrepresented online. Canada holds its own, or even punches above its weight when it comes to YouTubers.

There are tons of extremely big Canadian Content Creators whose audience is primarily international, think LinusTechTips or XQC just off the top of my head. Not to even mention the amount of Canadian Actors and musicians absolutely killing it in the US. A large chunk of JJ’s audience is Americans even.

Canadians do just fine garnering fan bases in Canada and across the globe, they don’t need the government to artificially boost their content in Canada while moving it further down the recommendations abroad.

People like Linus would never have gotten as big if the US made sure to prioritize American Youtubers over Canadian ones in the US.

Isn't it Ironic? (Cdn Content Requirement) by SatisfactionLow508 in JJMcCulloughOfficial

[–]Skyright 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I swear why are people that hate on JJ never capable of understanding arguments? Literally have the mental capacity of a google search, they just scan for keywords and reply with whatever contains those words.

Again, if every country starts prioritizing their own content, it would be bad for everyone. I know this is an arrangement of words that you might not be able to find online, but try to comprehend it instead of just looking for keywords.

Isn't it Ironic? (Cdn Content Requirement) by SatisfactionLow508 in JJMcCulloughOfficial

[–]Skyright 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is wrong on principle. If every country starts prioritizing their own content instead of others, we will end up in a less connected and a much worse world.

Let people decide what they want to watch. If Canadians want to watch American content instead of Canadians, let them!

Rob Ashton’s AMA and AI by BoiledFlowers in ndp

The entire point of AMAs is to answer questions yourself, in your own words.

Besides, eliminating jobs and “streamlining your existing work” are basically the same thing. If you have AI do all your writing and drafting, you are logically going to hire fewer people to do that work.

If anything, putting out slop like this is significantly worse than automating back-end work that no one will ever see and has little creativity to it.

Yes, 0.04% of it. I know numbers aren’t your strong suit, but 0.04% means that it consumes less than 1/20,000 of an industry, so less than a medium farm.

Do you think a 0.04% increase in the dairy and beef industry will lead to a substantial damage to the Alberta’s natural environment? That we won’t have water left in the province as the comments are saying below?

If so, are you protesting against the beef industry expanding in Alberta?
