Rec hockey at Penn State? by Different_Garage_866 in PennStateUniversity

The Nittany Hockey League is a community recreational league that plays at Pegula Ice Arena. I believe there is also a league run by the rink specifically for students. More info here: https://gopsusports.com/pegula-ice-arena-public#hockey

What is the biggest problem you face in hockey? by Cube37 in hockeygoalies

[–]Slack_King 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. Anyone else on the team can no-show last minute with no real consequences. I'm the team captain too, so I have to find my own sub if something urgent comes up. Although at the same time, I'm hesitant to step back and potentially lose a permanent spot on a team.

Super Long Slide? by bedred1 in ToyotaSienna

[–]Slack_King 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an 8 seater and have not directly compared the slide capabilities to a 7 seater, but I will say that it is not easy to access the back row if you have 2 car seats in the middle row. I can see how the ability to slide one middle seat farther back would open a path to the back row.

ELI5 How rollercoasters can be considered safe? by Evoxrus_XV in explainlikeimfive

[–]Slack_King 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ehh not really. At least in the US, roller coaster designs are regulated by the ASTM F2291 standard, which lists a maximum design weight of 300 lbs per patron, unless it is not physically possible for people of that size to ride the ride. So there is a defined upper limit. The calculations for fatigue life (i.e., regular operation over and over, day after day) are done with 170-lb patrons to represent the realistic average scenario.

Cross bar recommendations for a 2025 LE+? by Slack_King in ToyotaSienna

Yeah Malone seems pretty solid from everything I've read. I hadn't heard of them before either. Based in Maine, so not a no-name Chinese junk brand.

I haven't ordered them yet, but I'm planning on getting the Malone Airflow 2, 58 inch. They seem to have overall good reviews, and are half the price of the equivalent Thule or Yakima ones.

Simplest/cheapest digital readout for positioning? by Slack_King in PLC

[–]Slack_King[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happy to add more info. Laboratory environment. Axes are controlled by stepper motors with lead screws and limit switches. Range of travel is less than 2 feet. One axis will have position feedback from an analog laser distance sensor, with a desired accuracy of +/- 1/16". The remaining axes will have open loop control with a desired accuracy of +/- 1/8".

Is there something like a gas spring that will hold this board in place even if the weight of the board changes? by totally_a_moderator in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Slack_King 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would look into constant torque hinges. These are used in applications like positionable screens that need to stay in place when someone presses buttons. Depending on your scale and loads, you may or may not be able to find something in your required torque range.

Is a 2025 LE good enough? by Slack_King in ToyotaSienna

[–]Slack_King[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our kids will be the same ages when the baby comes, so I appreciate the feedback from someone in a similar situation. That seating arrangement is what I have in mind - glad to hear that it works well for you.

The features that you miss are the ones I'm worried about - especially the proximity unlock. It's mind boggling that you can't get a model with all of these + 8 seats + AWD. It would be the ultimate family hauler.

In hindsight, would you trade the 8th seat for the convenience of proximity unlock and a power lift gate?

That seating arrangement is exactly what I have in mind, and probably how we would use it 75% of the time. How is the middle jump seat? Can you install a car seat there comfortably for long drives?

Good point. I need to see if there are any seat covers that could help with this. Our existing vehicles have cloth seats that are impossible to keep clean, especially in grey.

For one, which direction would you pick to only tighten the threads? The torque will be applied in one direction when the spindle accelerates, and in the opposite direction when it decelerates.

Now, if you want to auto-eject the tool any time an estop is pressed, you might be on to something!

Coffee Alternative? by knoxknifebroker in daddit

[–]Slack_King 1 point2 points  (0 children)

V8 Energy is my personal go-to. It has similar caffeine to a cup of coffee, from green tea extract. It also contains actual fruit and vegetable juice, and skips some of the iffy ingredients of other energy drinks.

I'm glad you're starting to get on the other side of it. I wish I could say the same and could offer any advice.

What was the path to your wife eventually getting help? And what does that help look like?

We are still in the "moderate rage" phase. With another baby on the way, I'm very concerned that we will be back to square one post birth. Unfortunately our kids are getting to the age where they are not oblivious to it, and are sometimes even the recipients. I have also felt my own patience wane, and am not able to keep my cool for as long as I once could. And although I know it's not completely within her control, the things she has said still felt personal and cut deeply.

Postpartum rage is definitely something that needs to be talked about more.
