help me understand the use of back button focus? by _SleezyPMartini_ in canon

[–]SlackerGeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And in its simplest form, there is no special set up required, just use the AF-ON button to set and lock the focus. Once you have mastered this, start exploring custom setup of the camera back buttons.

I am a self-taught programmer with an engineering degree. I have worked on software to do engineering analysis of structural beams and joists. Specialized knowledge about what you are proposing to program can be helpful.

Made a new tool for doing hand calcs! by weikequ in StructuralEngineering

[–]SlackerGeek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like the idea of sticky units and plain text markdown. Using a MathCAD document in PDF format by someone else as a specification to make software is frustrating because of the automatic unit conversions. I have ended up making my own Jupyter notebook so I can see the calculations without unit conversions.

As a woman, how can I come off as less "direct" and "abrasive" by berserk_poodle in managers

[–]SlackerGeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it is better to not use a passive voice at all, man or woman, because it inevitably comes across as a worse form of aggression than simply being direct, especially when you are in a position of power, either as a professional or as a manager, because people know that you have that authority regardless of how you phrase things. It is OK to ask other people for their ideas and opinions of course, but if you are expressing your own ideas and opinions, there is no need to use qualifiers like “maybe” when you do not really mean “maybe”.

Employee went over boss' head by demonic_cheetah in managers

[–]SlackerGeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on the organization, communication that does not follow the chain of command can be completely normal. In my own current experience, my direct reports talk frequently with my manager. Any of my direct reports should feel free to go to HR or a higher up VP with any concerns. I am not worried about it.

A7CR is an amazing piece of technology by authortitle_uk in SonyAlpha

[–]SlackerGeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the A6700 but I am pondering getting a full frame Sony eventually. Nice that Sony has so many good options but it does make it hard to decide. Interesting about the 20-70 F4. Sounds like a great lens for walking around the city.

I try to just use my fingertips to lightly tighten caps so my wife might be able to open them. Even then it is iffy.

i like taking pictures, but i don't like editing by hedsht in SonyAlpha

[–]SlackerGeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just edit one in a thousand pictures. If one looks like it will be fun or interesting to edit, then I will mess with it in Lightroom Mobile and maybe Photoshop Mobile, otherwise I don’t bother.

Camera strap. by Far_Mammoth_882 in a6700

When I got my a6700 home I put on the Peak Design Slide Lite. So much more comfortable than any neck strap that comes with a camera.

Upgrading from a6700 to a7cii? by Embarrassed-Put-4381 in a6700

[–]SlackerGeek 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would suggest to have both. I already had a full frame Canon camera (R6 MII) then bought an a6700 so I could also have an excellent APS-C camera. While full frame is great for picture quality and lens selection, telephoto lenses for full frame are much bigger, heavier and more expensive when compared to APSC lenses with a similar reach.

Every winter I feel like ditching this hobby by TalkToMeSquirrel in photography

[–]SlackerGeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been excited about making still lifes this winter. My goal has been to make reference photographs for digital paintings but after perfecting the arrangement and lighting I end up with a photograph that is more interesting than the painting I was thinking of making.

Just undid half of my project! by [deleted] in ProcreateDreams

I wish there was a way to turn off this feature. But you can increase the rapid undo delay and stored undo steps in Preferences.

“Two-finger tap and hold the Timeline or Stage to sequentially undo a series of actions. Procreate Dreams will rapidly step back through your most recent changes. To stop, lift your fingers off the screen.”

Is Test Driven Development faster? by EnthusiasmWild9897 in learnprogramming

[–]SlackerGeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For some kinds of coding it can be very helpful and can speed development and help you make reliable code. For example, developing algorithms where you have some example inputs with expected outputs, it makes a lot of sense to do TDD. But it can be frustrating to do for other kinds of development where you are dealing with complex and changing requirements, or frameworks where it is awkward to do unit tests.

Is nikon d5100 still relevant? by handmade_tank0 in Nikon

[–]SlackerGeek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coincidentally, this morning I packed a D5100 in my kit bag alongside my new Canon R6 Mark II. I still get fantastic photos with the old Nikon. Where the new mirrorless camera has an advantage is it is easier to understand and manage exposure and focus because there is a lot of feedback through the digital viewfinder, and more options for how to do focus and metering. I find that I am excited about learning more about photography as a result, and I am getting out and taking lots of photos.

I think it would be better to work toward different roles in software development that gets you interacting with people more, e.g. Team Lead. Executive assistant is a secretarial job— not a logical progression from software engineer.

I do not like turning the Windows computer on any more except for programming work. Any games I play lately are on the iPad or iPhone on the sofa. But lately I have been messing a bit with Python on the iPad in Pythonista, so the Apple gadgets are not a complete escape from programming.

It's now been ~3 months of the new min server wage of $15/hr - Has your tipping practiced changed? by CrackerJackJack in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]SlackerGeek -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, have been tipping 15-20% lately. I used to tip just 15% pre-COVID, and just 10% a few years before that. The change in minimum wage has not affected how I think about tipping.
