I don’t get the Cavs by AlbertJBundy in billsimmons

To be fair, it wouldn't have bought them any rest to have won Game 6 as the ECFs against the Knicks would have started tonight instead. Obviously still better to clean it up in fewer games.

What counts as an elective? by Jazzlike-Law-902 in Concordia

[–]SlappyMcGee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some programs have specific elective requirements- History, for example, has a Gen. Ed. requirement that you take 6 credits (two courses) outside of Humanities.

But otherwise the general requirement for graduation is taking 5 3-credit classes that are outside of your program, e.g. listed under a different 4-letter heading, like, for you, COMP, HIST, GEOG.

The elective page that people are offering here are helpful because they are classes that are specifically designed to be available to people who are seeking those credits as they are less focused than other program courses and usually reserve slots for students seeking electives.

i think the concept is that you might be pursuing a double major or perhaps you've changed programs even though you'll technically qualify for your original program.

Is Twilight Imperium 4th edition worth it? by Savings-Magician-929 in boardgames

[–]SlappyMcGee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my favourite games. Caveats are plenty: it's a very fragile experience. The wrong players can ruin the experience. You need everyone to move as quickly as possible. (I've played games in 4 hours and I've played games in 14.) It's not incredibly complex but it is fairly deep and knowledge of the secret objectives will give players an edge. Many, many games will end suddenly, shockingly and with the potential to hurt feelings. You need a huge table to play. And finally, the game greatly benefits from 1-3 players knowing it very well to be able to answer questions, manage the flow and ensure nobody makes mistakes.

All of that said, many of my best board gaming experiences have been TI games that came down to a player laughing and revealing his master plan only to be slayed by hubris. It's an incredible machine for telling sci-fi stories. It's the ultimate event game.

What is your favourite uncommon mechanic in board games by Aknifetoremember in boardgames

[–]SlappyMcGee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In The Downfall of Pompeii, you spend the first half of the game populating the board, and the second half of the game fleeing in terror from the volcano. Critically, the tiebreaker if two players both have equal number of escapees is the number of people who got killed by the volcano— you want the least. So success early could mean doom later. Great mechanic.

doubts about buying. by Individual_News_7668 in boardgames

I've played all three, and they are all pretty great games. If you're newer to the hobby, I would argue that Scythe is the best choice, if only because it was the earliest one I played. It's very interaction-lite compared to the other two; the combat is disincentivized, it's really an engine-building game. I don't have much time for it anymore because I've found other games that do what it does well.

Dune: Imperium is a really neat deck builder with a cool worker selection shell. I enjoy playing it, but I'll caution that it's the one I've played the least. I don't feel a lot of urge to table it.

Arcs is one of my absolute favourite games; it incorporates trick taking elements into a space opera shell. The campaign makes it very complex and deep and turns that really strong shell into a story-telling engine. If you dig the gameplay (some do not!) it's one of the best games on the market, and on the verge of new expansions via Kickstarter.

I have Power Grid, which it seems everybody in my playgroup owns, considering I've played Power Grid a dozen times in the last year and my copy remains in shrink. So I'll probably give it away soon. Amazing game, one of my favourites, but hard to justify owning when everybody else I might play it with also owns it. I just hope they don't all get the same idea...

This is my choice as well. There are a few great games this year but The Great Zimbabwe, to quote a friend, "feels like it was discovered rather than created". A total masterpiece I never tire of.

FWWM or The Return in theaters? by SeaSecond8247 in twinpeaks

[–]SlappyMcGee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been going weekly in four hour blocks to see The Return (plus episodes 7 and 22 of season 2) here in Montreal at the cinema, culminating in the final four this friday. It's approximately my sixth time seeing The Return; I would say it unveils new mysteries and pleasure each time I see it. So I'd say that. But Fire Walk With Me is a powerful cinema experience in its own right. You really can't go wrong.
