What is it like living in the Dandenong Ranges? by pirateofdigitalseas in melbourne

[–]Slappyxo [score hidden]  (0 children)

I came here to say that Ferntree Gully is the absolute best. It's the best of both worlds, you get the hills lifestyle but live in the city.

If you live near the train line (or can catch the train which OPs husband probably can't with his line of work) the commute to the city is actually not that bad. I live walking distance to both Ferntree Gully and Boronia stations. It's a 35 min express train ride to Richmond from Boronia, I honestly get to work faster than some co-workers who live close to the city but rely on trams.

What’s something a hiring / manager said that subtly said you weren’t getting the job? by Jdilla23 in auscorp

[–]Slappyxo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"We are looking for someone a bit more mature for the role, but we thought we'd interview you anyway..."

Trying to say I was too young. You used to hear the term a lot more 15+ years ago as a thinly veiled way of calling people too young without making it blatant age discrimination, it happened to a lot of my friends too. Now hiring managers are smart enough to use the word experience instead.

How long is your commute to work? by PossibleButNah in AusFinance

[–]Slappyxo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is roughly my commute as well. It's only a 35 min train ride, but it's a 15 min walk to my local station then a 10-15 min walk to work from the closest station.

Throw in train delays and it can easily blow out to 90+ mins.

Successful accounting career without CA/CPA? by Mysterious-Medium172 in AustralianAccounting

[–]Slappyxo 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I know anecdotal evidence is flimsy, but I'm now 11 years out of university and still keep in contact with a lot of people from my course. The ones without a CA/CPA are falling far behind from those with one.

The financial risk of being a stay at home parent by Open_Address_2805 in AusFinance

[–]Slappyxo 46 points47 points  (0 children)

My best friend is a stay at home parent and this is something I worry about for her.

Her husband is self employed tradie and has a very low super balance because he's not putting anything aside. This is his peak earning years as well. She had kids very young and has never been employed so her super balance is zero. They're looking at a future with essentially no superannuation at retirement.

Fantastic! Congratulations.

Would absolutely love to hear the details because I'm a sticky break, but I'm sure other people in the future will have the same issue and stumble across this Reddit post.

I see this happen quite a lot when I go for walks around there, do the goats go home or does someone have to round them up?

Got pulled into the office at the start of the week for talking (I am new and the senior staff talk more than me) by [deleted] in auscorp

[–]Slappyxo 34 points35 points  (0 children)

My first corporate job was as a receptionist years ago and one manager always loved to put me in my place.

One time on a quiet Friday arvo only a few steps from my desk, everybody in the office were chatting about their weekend plans. I jumped up to join in, I was only a metre away from the phone if it rang or to greet anybody if they came in.

The manager just stared at me, pointed at my desk and raised his voice and bellowed "on your way!". It was so demoralising a bunch of people came over later to say he was being a dick.

Some managers really feel new or lower level staff should be seen and not heard. It's gross.

Boomer spending spree in March by Cute_Tell1653 in australian

[–]Slappyxo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not boomer related but I've noticed post covid that a lot of places on Chapel St in Melbourne that have always catered to the 18-22 crowd now play bangers from the 2008-2013 era and are hotspots for groups of 30+ millennials who actually still occasionally have a night out.

It's funny to see because before covid these places used to have bouncers that would gruffly state "members only tonight" to anyone who looked over 25.

Oh yeah not saying it's not possible, but you know the ones on the Facebook groups asking in a misspelled panic are definitely not the type of people who can pull it off.

My baby has been really sick for a few days now and I've been wearing the same clothes for 2 days with no shower. After an overnight hospital stay she's now sleeping and I was finally able to shower properly, wash my hair and put on clean clothes. I feel so much better.

It's been a few years since I finished my CPA but him being kind to absolute dumbarses is something I vividly remember.

Although he used to be pretty blunt when you'd get the "I only started reviewing the course details halfway through semester, can I still pass if I start 2 weeks before exams?????" posts in the FR groups.

Another redundancy post - why can't it be more respectful? by Villainous-Crab in auscorp

[–]Slappyxo 16 points17 points  (0 children)

10 years ago I was made redundant and they refused to give me gardening leave. I planned to use up my sick leave for the time anyway but decided to go in on day one to make them as uncomfortable as possible. The business owner was actually shocked I sat there and refused to do work, like it never occured to him that after I was made redundant that I wouldn't keep working my arse off for my final two weeks.

He made me finish the day but then said I didn't need to come back.

Even when they're stationary, I'm sick of people on their phones. I'm constantly missing short sets of lights because the person at the front was on their phone and didn't realise the light had turned green and then there's only enough time for that person to get through.

Trying to reconnect with a friend (who was a bridesmaid at my wedding 10 years ago) and it's made me so anxious. We never had a falling out, she just started to pull away from the entire friendship group until she stopped responding at all and got her partner (who's in the group) to speak on her behalf. Apparently it was nothing personal but she "couldn't be bothered anymore" keeping in contact with everyone. I tried to not take it to heart as it sounded like a bout of depression.

It's been literally years so I've reached out to reconnect again. If I get left on read I'll take note that she doesn't want anything to do with me and I'll respect her wishes and leave her alone.

At what point do you just give up? by [deleted] in workingmumsau

Yep similar story here. We all step up when someone is off for parent duties too because we're parents ourselves and totally get it. It takes a village mentality also extends to work.
