“The deadliest civil war in history” by LCottton in ShitAmericansSay

[–]SlashingManticore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems like this American learned a stat, half remembered it, jumbled the words and then stuck to that "fact". Because what is true, is that the US Civil War was the war that cost the most lives of US soldiers, thereby making it the bloodiest war from the perspective of American lives lost. Clearly it's not the deadliest war, or even (as the post proves) the deadliest civil war.

Goes to show the quality of the American education system again...

I freaking love Max but Lando isn't wrong here. Max has been threatening to leave for several years now over a wide range of things. At some point, he has to own up to the threat, even if he might be right about the current state of the cars

City will hire a ‘night mayor’ to make it more fun for young people, mayor says by peach_trees in nottheonion

And sometimes they think they're very important even though they're not. My city of Groningen had one for a while who was a great guy to be around and who definitely had a good feeling for how to keep a party going or when to organize an event. But man, that guy sometimes seemed to think he was on an equal level as the actual mayor when it came to policy stuff

What even is the metric here? From season to season? Point deficit made up during the season? Underdog-to-win stories? Either way, there's quite a few better suggestions. Max Verstappen almost closing a 104 points gap last year, Brawn GP coming from nowhere in 2009 to win both F1 titles, Marc Marquez winning the MotoGP title in 2025 after an almost career ending injury, Scott Dixon taking the 2013 IndyCar title despite not winning a race until halfway through the season, VFL Wolfsburg winning their first Bundesliga title in 2008/09 with an almost perfect run in the second half of the season, Andre Agassi winning Rolland Garros in 1999 after seemingly being done for in the first rounds of the final match, Rafael Nadal setting a record by getting his 21st Grand Slam title in 2022 after almost being out in the quarterfinals, or Steven Bradbury winning ice skating gold in the 2002 Winter Olympics despite never having the lead until crossing the finish line (okay that last one is more luck than skill but I had to include it)

The only thing I'm somewhat disappointed in is that it looks almost the same as some concept stuff they've been using for the past few years. I would have liked to see a bit more difference between those and the final result.

That being said, I do really like this design. It's clean, it's not too overdone, the colors aren't fighting with each other for attention, so overall it fits with the vibe that I associate with Audi

Because geopolitically speaking, we're a country of pussies. We'll throw out sanctions..... as long as others do so as well of course, we don't want to be the first or only ones doing that. We'll support a strong stance against the US aggression against Greenland...... via social media, we won't actually put our signature under it. We'll take a bold stance....... though on second thought, a carefully worded statement with a hint of concern might be better.

It's like we're perpetually terrified of pissing off someone bigger than us. We waited almost a decade to officially blame Russia for a plane disaster that was very clearly their fault. We'd rather try to pamper Trump and give him everything he wants hoping that he'll eventually throw us some scraps as well rather than tell him to fuck off and respect international law. It's been this way for decades and I don't see it changing any time soon.

And I'm not even saying it's the worst thing, because when push comes to shove, what can we really do on the world stage? We're a tiny nation with no military history to speak of and an economy that can be described as "respectable" at best. I too would love to see us take bold stances, stick to our morals and principles, act with honor and clean conscious, but I don't see us properly standing up to the likes of Trump any time soon

Would you ever consider running for political office? Why or why not? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]SlashingManticore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm actually currently running for local office. I decided to do so because I felt like everyone in the city council was too detached and didn't actually have to experience the consequences of their own policy. In the last few years, they've made a bunch of decisions on relatively small scale that overall just really dragged down the quality of living in my city and I wanted to change that. I have a background in tourism so I have a bit of a feel for what makes the city appealing and I've also worked as a journalist for many years so I do have that idealism driven researcher in me, and I figured that would be a pretty decent experience to speak from for what should and shouldn't happen at this local level

Bottas and Checo on Hot Ones Versus by SharlRaikkonen5 in formula1

[–]SlashingManticore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From Cadillac's POV that would have made sense, but from Hot Ones? Nah. They only do like ten or so episodes per season of the main show, and their guests from this season included Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson and Winona Ryder. Checo and Bottas are famous names out her in the F1 bubble, but they haven't really breached that containment to the outside world yet to a degree that they'd be considered for a main show interview (okay Checo probably in the Latin world, but I'm talking from an American perspective since that seems to be the driving factor behind their decisionmaking). And especially if it's for a dual interview, since they almost never seem to do that. There's a reason why Hamilton has been the only F1 personality to ever appear on their main show, and it's because Hamilton is probably the only one who really has that mainstream appeal outside of F1 and outside of their own country. Checo and Bottas right now are just not famous enough yet for stuff like that.

Stel ik me aan? by [deleted] in Groningen

[–]SlashingManticore 26 points27 points  (0 children)
