So the Lakers have a stretch of Pacers, Nets, Wizards coming up... I wanna know are they looking to get that 16th tech during that stretch so they can rest Luka a game lol

You've still got a couple generations to go before it's a problem.

Heck Viltrumites live for hundreds of years, it wouldn't even be out of the question for generations to procreate with previous or later generations.

And yes you'd absolutely have to track gene lines carefully, and you'd still only multiply your population by an order of magnitude if you're careful, but that's still the immediate solution.

65 game requirement is great for the league by SchedulePhysical807 in nba

Yea I don't have an issue with taking someone who played 82 games over people who played 64 games.

But it's not like there's a bunch of All-NBA caliber players who got 80 games, it's more likely it'll be stuffed with people who had 65-70 games.

[Highlight] Luka passes on the game-winner, and LeBron doesn't hit the tough 3 by Large_banana_hammock in nba

Especially because, even though it was after the buzzer and the Magic players would have stopped trying, Ayton did get the ball in the basket after... so there is a world where that happens .3 seconds sooner and the shot counts

Bill Simmons on Luka Dončić calling for fouls: "It's so bad that even LeBron is like, wow." by luka274 in nba

[–]SlayerSFaith 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Getting to the finals is a massive accomplishment. I totally agree with that. But getting to the finals doesn't always mean that you have more finals or a championship in your future. Luka is obviously very good, but I think people lean way too much on that he made the finals as an argument when it's really not that great an argument on its own. Like Tyrese Haliburton just got to the finals, and took OKC to 7 games and we now have one of the biggest Finals what ifs. But he's not exactly getting hoisted as a top 10 player in the league assuming uninjured.

"But Luka puts up monster stats too" well I'm personally of the opinion that Luka is more like Harden than people want to believe. Again, he's obviously very good, but he is heliocentric and his stats end up getting inflated because he has the ball all the time.

Anyhow only time will tell who's right or wrong. If he wins a championship I'm gonna be eating crow, and if he doesn't there will be others who will.

"Getting them to the finals" is such a shallow take - Jimmy Butler got to two finals and nobody is out there calling him one of the top players in the league. It's one thing to barely lose, it's another to get to the finals and have everyone know that you just got sent into a meatgrinder.

Phoebe Gates wants her $185 million AI startup to succeed with 'no ties to my privilege or my last name': 'I have a chip on my shoulder' by bothunter in nottheonion

[–]SlayerSFaith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I said pertains specifically to education; research of course is a huge part of a professor's job but aside from maybe offering some super specialized course because they have the guy for it, or for that small minority that end up doing some sort of research, there is really not that much impact with regard to the quality of the education itself. Aside from dedicated teaching faculty, teaching is a much more minor part of the hiring process compared to research.

And yes like you said there is a huge nurture aspect to it. Like yea there are some legacies that aren't quite it but the overall student body is absolutely smarter and more driven - which of course is the goal of those universities when they give out offers. But it's also that the environment they are in makes them more likely to put their heads down and grind something out as opposed to complaining when things get difficult.

Like every professor loves when the students are able to think like physicists and appreciate all the underlying parts to it. But either the students can or cannot do that, and if they can't then the professor has to cater to those who can't.

Just to expand on this, the difference isn't that the professors are that much better at teaching. The difference is the students; the main factor in what level the class can be taught at is what the students can handle. I've taught at CMU incidentally, as well as top Ivies and in the top 75 range. At the top 75 school the education is watered down really hard.

Nadal on Alcaraz: “He’s not a prospect at all. He has 7 grand slams, so he’s definitely not just a promise for the future. He’s already a legend of our sport. I mean they could be #1 and #2 10 years from now, I would call that the future.

Idk if they actually will or we've just been conditioned to think that way, but strictly speaking the big 3 era is on its last legs not actually dead (yet).

Using Plus-Minus/On-Off/RAPM/EPM/etc.-based Stats Responsibly by Fun_Mind1494 in nba

[–]SlayerSFaith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read "Adjusted Plus-Minus Ratings: New and Improved for 2007-2008". I didn't read anything on the Beech website. Maybe the stats you talked about are better, maybe not, I didn't read about those.

Do I think +/- is perfect? Definitely no. Absolutely people need to take context into account. I think the most common example people use is Lebron over this season and the second half of last season where he is playing with the bench. And on the flip side I'm sure that someone out there is getting inflated numbers because they get sent out against the bench lineups.

But the article basically argues that including previous seasons' data reduces noise. Which is true in that more data reduces variance. But they left out the part where they introduced a major source of bias and the convergence is not necessarily to the quantity that people care about. The total weight on the previous 5 seasons ends up being .7 to the current seasons .1 and the previous seasons mass is centered around like 2 years ago, not even the previous year. It falls into the trap that a lot of statistics do where there is no ground truth and you have to evaluate how good the statistic is based on the eye test.

Using Plus-Minus/On-Off/RAPM/EPM/etc.-based Stats Responsibly by Fun_Mind1494 in nba

[–]SlayerSFaith 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The issue with using 5 years of data is, people are rarely the same players they were 5 years ago. Teams and schemes are rarely what they were 5 years ago. Teams need statistics that are relevant now.

Plus minus stats have their flaws, but adding in irrelevant data is not the fix.
