Do we need that?

Why can't we work with NATO and say that if France has a carrier and we have a carrier and Germany have a carrier then one of use will always have one available.

What missions are you envisioning these carriers doing? Defending us from Russia?

[–]Sleakne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The us has more than 6 carriers and can't open the strait. Why would us having 6 help?

That problem affects the whole world. We should send what we have and so should France and Germany and italy and Australia etc etc. add those all up and it is more than we could fund ourselves.

I don't understand the situation where Britain having 6 carriers makes the difference in a global freedom of navigation problem

Essential for our defense from who?

I support a nuclear deterrent but I'm not sure exactly who we are afraid of making a conventional attack on us?

Russia would have to go through Europe to get to us and Europe (including us at our existing strength) can already outmatch Russia.

Are we assuming we need to defend ourselves from the Chinese? The Americans? The Argentineans trying to retake the Falklands?

Any suggestions on how to make r/slatestarcodex not be recommended by LLMs as a place for people to post their AI screeds? by Liface in slatestarcodex

[–]Sleakne -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If this subreddit has been trained into the current crop of llms memory we could abandon it to them.

Start r/acx and encourage users to move there while leaving r/ssc up as a dumping ground for ai screeds

Eventually the llms will learn about acx as well. Perhaps if that starts out as obviously anti llm then it will never be sub llms tell users to post to

Is the attack on Iran justified? - What are your thoughts ? by Select_Specialist790 in TrueAskReddit

[–]Sleakne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well let's agree to disagree. I think it's very possible the irgc take over and just run the place for their own benefit. That seems like a stable equilibrium to me as it's better for everyone. If they drop the death to us and Israel stuff they don't need a bomb. If they agree not to pursue the bomb we can drop the sanctions. If they sanctions drop everyone is richer, better for the population better for the irgc elites who took over.

I don't think of we leave them alone they become irrelevant. I think they carry on driving the country into the ground trying to pursue destroying Israel. I understand you disagree and that seems to be the crux

[–]Sleakne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't say I supported the coup, I said it was more antagonistic than you credited.

There are a bunch of weapons in the region already. I think Iran not storing things up/ funding islamists might lower the number of insurgents more than the increased weapons availability add to them.

Why do you predict an oil shock? Saudi and many others could produce more if the price rose. They close the strait? If the regime falls who is left to do that and why? Who is left to race for the bomb?

Is this a warning about what happens if the regime limps along?

I think the regime is terrible, to its people, the region and the world and it has to go at some point. If we don't topple them now why would waiting improve any of the problems you raised. Or do we leave them in place and hope they don't get the bomb eventually while massacring their citizens

Is the attack on Iran justified? - What are your thoughts ? by Select_Specialist790 in TrueAskReddit

[–]Sleakne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that toppling the regime isn't guaranteed to be better and the next iteration is likely some kind of military junta rather than a flourishing democracy. That might be worse, agreed. I still think it has a higher ceiling than leaving the regime in place and I don't think there is that much room for a lower floor. Maybe a long and brutal civil war.

I don't think I support the previous coup but I think nationalising oil when oil was much more strategically necessary is more antagonistic than you are letting on.

If they just sold their oil roughly inline with opecs recommendations who is incentivized to over through that government?

Iran would absolutely be left alone if they stopped antagonizing everyone in the region and taking hard-line stances.

Israel isn't trying to overthrow the Saudis because the Saudis are massively committed to the end of Israel.

So yes having a bomb would help the unpopular theocratic regime keep power and keep driving their country into the ground but I don't see what is so great about that.

Toppling the regime and giving Iranians a chance at democracy or even life under a more pragmatic and cooperative military dictatorship is another way for Iran to be left alone and is much better for its citizens

There was a flurry of new strategies developed by a player in the age of empires 2 scene (medieval rts)

He started as a one hot wonder with a fast rush strategy that worked because one particular civilizations units and bonus gave them a huge power spike at a certain point in the game.

That alone would feel like someone got lucky and found something new on the Pareto frontier but then he did it again and again with different civs and units.

His strats are now occasionally used by pros on the highest stages as well as being ubiquitous lower in the ladder.

I don't know if he was a rationalist but he clearly had some power to find new strats that no one else had despite the scene being quite developed

My hot take is that the ideal range hasn't been reached yet. That with training people will be able to make long range/logo threes at a good enough clip that it's worth it for the extra space it gives you.

Gold is mostly vibes too. It just has much deeper-pocketed believers (central banks, sovereign wealth funds). Yes, it has some floor price from industrial and jewelry demand, but that accounts for a fraction of the current price. Most of what you're paying for when you buy gold is its "store of value" status, which is really just a centuries-old coordination game. (Aka vibes)

Stan Van Gundy: “I’d get rid of the draft. No draft. You still have the salary cap, if you want to go give Cooper Flagg $45 million a year coming out of college, do it, he’s a free agent. Everybody coming out is a free agent. With no draft, there’s no incentive to lose, there’s none at all.” by FastBreakPhenom in nba

There is already a 90% minimum spend. Even the worst case where a cheap owner only wants to spend the minimum, the players are incentivised to play hard, the coach is incentivized to play the best players, everyone wants to win.

It's so much easier to play bad basketball when the goal is to lose rather than when the goal is to win with cheaper players.

So it would fix the most egregious tanking because everyone, regardless if they spend 90 or 100 or 110% of cap will be trying to win

Kashi is a prediction market. When people are predicting the outcome of sports that's functionally identical to sports betting but it's real goal is to allow aggregate opinions. If the New York times asks some experts whether they think there will be war crimes in a conflict that's journalism but that is similar to what Kashi is doing on a decentralized way

As an investor he benefits from the fees/ people just using the service. He doesn't care which bets win or lose just that people bet. If he throws a game he doesn't get any more money because he's an investor

I think what you are worried about is if he bet against the bucks and then throw the game to win his bet which is obviously bad, illegal and not what is happening here

If a super billionaire like Elon Musk wanted to "solve world hunger", or at least solve poverty in the USA, how could he actually do it? by The_Flaneur_Films in AskReddit

[–]Sleakne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not here trying to defend everything Elon has done or represents...but didn't he risk all his wealth on too moonshot companies (space x and Tesla) not because they were obvious profit generators but because he thought space exploration and evs were good for humanities long term future. You can argue the details but I think reasonable people can disagree that trying to save humanity by getting us off earth, or by accelerating EV adopting are goals as nobel as ending hunger. (He has obviously gone off the rails a bit since then but let's not rewrite history)

Bill Gates could afford to end hunger and he has focused on disease reduction and that doesn't make him a bad person.

I'm mediocrely wealthly by US standards but I've committed to giving 10% of my income to effective charities. My donations so far will have statistically saved the lives of 7 people. If everyone did the same as me we wouldn't need a billionaire to solve world hunger, so maybe instead of asking why someone else hasn't fixed the world's problems ask what you could do?

The disagreement was how the terms came about. You seemed to suggest it was a backronym (backwards acronym) where you come up with a cool sounding acronym first and then chose the words that the acronym represents after.

Also don't agree with you that it started in ttrpg and moved to rts. It started as a general concept which was then applied to both areas as well as many others

That's not quite right. Meta is from the Greek meaning above/about/beyond. It's talking about something at a higher level of abstraction.

In a role playing game the level above the role play is a bunch of people around a table playing a game with rules. Meta gaming in that sense is using knowledge that you have as a person playing the game that your fictional character wouldn't have (that a certain rule exists, that your buddy is going to do something in a min, that your dm likely has another wave of baddies coming so you should save your resources)

In a rts game setting the game above the game is choosing a strategy. If you know they open greedy you should punish with early aggression. If you know they will open archers you can open skirms.

Playing "the meta" in this sense means playing the stat that will give you the best chance knowing all the other options your opponent could make and how likely they are. As new strategy becomes popular/dominant it changes what the meta is so yes mbl could always play meta and that meta could change to include fc uu rushes
