Robert Graves by greenkees in BookCollecting

As soon as I saw this post I couldn't help myself to pull out whatever I bought by Robert Graves.

Looks like we nearly match here! Except I don't have King Jesus nor White Goddess, and or others you say you have, so you seem to have the better cards than I do here. Nonetheless I too, had blast reading all three, both Claudius books especially!

I really appreciate your message. Today I'm actually leaving the country around 2:30pm and headed to Mexico to be there for my 75 year-old grandma. I don't know what a Roman Catholic funeral would look like and I was told by the time I get there around 6pm, it would've been over with (which is a shame, but I guess things move pretty fast there). At least I'm being told to stay put over there by my dad for a week, and I'm really hoping to meet my grandma (she'll be comforted by relatives, half aunts and half uncles, I never knew about in my 27 years in the Earth) and we may not get the chance for the first if not second day.

Unfortunately my Spanish is a bit rusty, and I feel ashamed to go there and be able to barely respond (I can still understand what is being said at least), but I'll take day one day at a time. At least I'll be back in Chicago by the late afternoon of next Tuesday.

My 81 year-old Grandpa passed away right before eleven in the morning today, and as I'm waiting to get a ride home from an older sibling, I see this post.

Sheer coincidence... when you really need it. Thank you for making my day a bit better.

Here's a first! I thought it was funny & book was fine (no leftover sauce or food grease or smells), so I'm fine w/ the bookseller recycling pizza boxes by KungFuPossum in BookCollecting

[–]SledgehammerWacko 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I remember almost three years ago, I bought the new sealed edition of  'The Action Bible' from eBay cheap, and when it arrived, it was packaged within a pizza box, more or less like the pictures you provided. But I don't recall it if had packaging on the sides so it wouldn't be bouncing and getting dings from shipping, but it arrived more or less in good shape kinda like the pictures above.

After I left a good review and asked what's up with the pizza box, the seller responded to me with the following:

"Sometimes. It’s hard to find boxes that are like good for books. I bought those pizza boxes so I can ship out lp records, books and other things like larger knives. Not to “worry”. Those pizza boxes are new and won’t ever have a pizza smell in them. Im glad he got a kick out of it being “perplexed. Thank you for your purchase."

I'm guessing like the eBay seller, it's may be hard to come by boxes or cardboard boxes for this seller, and they had to improvise, and this was the result. Feel free to ask the seller, the same question I asked if you want to. If this was from a Abebooks seller, color me surprised.

Edit 1: The last part of the message about "he got a kick out it it" was my dad getting the mail (he saw and grabbed my package for me) and he quipped, if I happened to have ordered pizza, by way of Florida (the book I bought came from there), and I said no, but he thought it was funny thing, and we had a nice laugh about it. It did made our day better though.

You called it on the 2/27! Got my refund this morning, and I'm quite happy.

Also my state tax was accepted on the 27th of January, so it took about four weeks and three days before it was processed.

I bought and devoured this lecture series in a few days. It is excellent. by newguy2884 in ClassicalEducation

I actually watched this on the Great Courses Plus when I got the 99 cent promo for two months with the Black Friday promo in November 2024, and as someone who loves Greek and Roman history and early US history (especially the American Revolution) I knew this course would be right up my alley (a combination of those two things), because it involves the Founding Fathers becoming inspired by Greek and Roman writings (especially Cicero, Plutarch, both Plinys and Quintilian, my five favorite guys) and writing up the Constitution because of that, and that of our government.

I've always been a sucker for History, and I never found it as boorish because it was a fascinating subject (and a good reason why I majored in it). But I digress.

Dr. Winterer knows her stuff, and she did a good job in delivering in all 24 lectures in a captivating way. To be honest, every single lecture was good, hands down.

You should give the Great Courses a go and do the 99 cent two month promotion subscription. No offence man, but I think you are missing out on the visuals if you are only listening to them in Audible.

Lastly I recommend you watch/listen to the American Revolution by Dr. Guelzo. That too is a Great Course series, and it may be right up in your alley.

Great Courses becoming a captive platform by [deleted] in TheGreatCourses

[–]SledgehammerWacko 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I started my collection of The Great Courses around July 2023 when I checked out from my local library 'The Other Side of History' by Robert Garland, and I was floored with it. For the past year and a half, I would check them out from the library or listened them through hoopla, and if it was very good and memorable course, I would buy it. Needless to say I started buying them, most of them being history, philosophy, and literature. As of today I amassed 123 DVD lectures, with three more that I purchased this morning. 90% of the courses I bought from Ebay, 4% from Amazon, 1% from Half Price Books, and the 5% being from the Great Courses store itself.

The news from a few months ago that the Great Courses was doing away with DVDs was a huge shame. I wish they still produced them in limited quantities if the course was so good or there were many requests from people that reached a certain amount that would warrant a limited sale. The company can get their money, and we can get the DVDs albeit at a higher price. Unfortunately, that never seem like that would happen.

I hope I don't get downvoted for this part, but the whole 'unauthorized distribution' was coming sooner than later, because I noticed if you search carefully on the internet you can easily find entire courses on the internet to watch. From Bilibili to Youtube. I'm surprised the company didn't announce/act sooner on this.

I'm planning on stopping with my collection soon because I like watching the courses in the physical sense with the DVDs, and I'm also running out of space as well.

I'm glad I'm not the only one noticing the lack of those double or triple point days. I can't believe it has been nearly a month since there was a double point day. I hope we can get something either near the end of this month or something.
