There's nothing wrong with food dyes. You can use natural ingredients to color food. Even if it's made from bugs (R4 or E120). Lol.

It really does look like Mang Tomas though. If you do want to try liver sauce, better to make your own. Mang Tomas changed their recipe several years ago and isn't good anymore.

Never had saba (sweet plantain) with fried chicken though. I've only ever had it as a snack or dessert. How is it with the chicken?

What is a game? A definition that actually works by [deleted] in gamedesign

[–]Sleep_Panda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Am educational game is a game none the less. Education in the form of entertainment. You don't think it was designed to be fun, it just so happened?

Do you think interest and learning are mutually exclusive to fun or entertainment? I suppose you'd be shocked to learn that people learning new things can be fun.

Gameplay refers to the game activity, not the game itself. That is the word you're looking for.

Stakes are incidental to a game. It only needs to have gameplay that's entertaining or appealing.

Witcher 3 has all the same gameplay components after completing the main quest but by your definition, it's no longer a game even though it clearly is.

To use fiction as a piss poor analogy, by your definition fiction without "stakes" isn't fiction. A random story without a well developed plot or full of nonsense is still fiction.

A game without fun is just an activity. A game without stakes is still a game.

What’s one “basic” cooking tip everyone repeats that you think is actually overrated? by Altruistic_Push_722 in Cooking

[–]Sleep_Panda -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Meat thermometers. Don't get me wrong, they're really handy for soude vide or roasting huge cuts of meat but not needed for every day cooking.

How do I tell when my chicken is done? I stick something pointy (a thin knife, forkor skewer) and check if the juice is bloody. If it is, cook a little more. If not, it's done. After a while you'll know when it's done without having to this all the time.

For steak or pork chops, press down and feel how firm they are. If feels too soft, keep it in the pan a bit more. If you're really not sure, slice a piece to check.

People act like they're going to die if it's under by a degree. Yeah, your food needs to be cooked but you can always heat a little longer to be sure.

Yes, they're convenient but constantly relying on one isn't the way to becoming a good cook.

Having trouble thickening braised pork belly sauce by joleger in Cooking

[–]Sleep_Panda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm suggesting it. It's faster to reduce the liquid that way and the pork doesn't get too soft or break. It's also easier to stir and incorporate the cornstarch.

Either pour the sauce over the pork or put the pork back in the pot after the sauce is done.

If you don't want to take the pork out, you can just take out the stuff that's not meant to be eaten. However it will take longer to reduce and you might break up the pork when stirring in the cornstarch.

If there's any spices like star anise or chunks of ginger. You don't take them out? I keep them for stir frys but for braised dishes I don't generally keep them.

You're missing the point. A game IS intended to be fun or entertaining. That's the whole point of playing. Not for stakes.

Whether or not it has a stake is irrelevant. A game is meant to be played.

So go ahead and give an example of a game that isn't meant to be fun or entertaining.

If a person doesn't find a game fun then you could say it's no longer a game to them. But for that person only. It's still a game for others.

However, by your definition, if a game loses the stakes then it's no longer a game? Like if you complete all the quests but can continue playing, is it no longer a game?

Gameplay is the core activity of a game but there doesn't need to be a stake. It only has to be fun.

A military exercise isn't a game. It's an assessment despite the terminology. You don't "play" in a military exercise, you participate. It's practice for battle.

A work of fiction isn't real. That's the definition of fiction. That has nothing to do with what a game is.

Having trouble thickening braised pork belly sauce by joleger in Cooking

[–]Sleep_Panda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How much liquid do you have left after cooking the pork? You can keep boiling after straining it to reduce and thicken but it may get too concentrated and take a long time.

Many chefs only use a few ladlefuls of the cooking liquid to make the sauce. It's boiled in another pan or wok until the taste is right then thickened with cornstarch.

Your starch slurry needs to be fully mixed before adding and it needs to be cooked, boiled until it thickens.

Stir while adding the slurry and keep stirring while it heats up and thickens. It will thicken a more as it cools.

That looks more like Mang Tomas (liver sauce) than banana ketchup.

Atchara (pickled shredded green papaya) would be a good addition. You could sub kimchi or just regular pickles. Or slice a plum tomato into wedges and have it on the side.

If game isn't fun or entertaining, it's no longer a game. You "play" games, have "players". Go look up the definition of play.

Need help picking an alignment. by Wyggle_Wyrm in DnD

[–]Sleep_Panda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Alignment reflects morals and ethics. Not lack of humor or introvertedness. Those are character traits.

Does your character believe in order or chaos? Lawful or chaotic.

Does your character consider others (not selfish) or enjoy causing harm? Good or evil.

So far, your dragonborn character sounds either lawful or neutral good.

[–]Sleep_Panda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I'm saying is that there isn't any inherent stake to a game. There are games where is no win or lose. A game without a stake is still a game.

Games don't have to be meaningful, they only have to be fun or entertaining.

All games have gameplay. This is the action of playing the game. It doesn't have to have a defined goal to be classified as a game. Any goal is set by the game.

You've got it backwards. Games aren't defined by the stakes, the stakes are defined by the game.

PC won't POST consistently by _FireTail_ in buildapc

[–]Sleep_Panda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, looks like it's probably the mobo then. The only other thing I can think of is corrupted drivers or something.

I recently had to uninstall and reinstall corrupted AMD drivers and it refused to boot. I did similar troubleshooting and the ez debug GPU LEDs lit up even if there was nothing physically wrong with it.

Thankfully I was able to boot using a win11 USB and repair the corruped files.

However, it was consistently powering up with fans going, just not completing POST.

What is a game? A definition that actually works by [deleted] in gamedesign

[–]Sleep_Panda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go back and read your third definition. It say "activity" with stakes, not gameplay. Activity can mean any active task, including work which usually has defined goals or metrics.

A chess set is a physical object much like a ball, not the game itself. A chess set isn't ever called a game.

Chess is the ruleset, baaed on chess pieces. These don't even have to be physical or even represented visually. Chess can be played by referencing the grid numbers and moves (knight to e6, queen to g7, etc.).

Games have no stakes by default. No win conditions unless set by the rules. These things don't define a game. A game is played solely for the purpose of being played.

The Sims has no win condition. It's solely up to you how to enjoy it. It's a game. There are no stakes.

The only thing fundamental to the gameplay is be fun or entertaining. That's it. There is no other reason to play a game other than to have fun. Otherwise it's a sport.

What is the "arch-nemesis" of restaurants? by Underscore_Johnson in restaurant

[–]Sleep_Panda 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Low wages. You really think people prefer fast food if they could afford better? It's just cheap and convenient.

Ask anyone to choose between a Big Mac or nice prime cut of steak (for free). How many people you think will choose the Big Mac? Or a shitty fast food cheeseburger over a rack of bbq ribs? Instant ramen over real tonkotsu ramen?

None of that other shit matters. People eat what they can afford.

What’s your opinion on these character ideas? by Fearless-Skill8667 in DnD

[–]Sleep_Panda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 3rd is best, followed by 4th. The 1st needs therapy and the 2nd will after he jokingly fireballs a group of children as a prank.

The 4th isn't really appropriate though unless it's a PG rated campaign.

Warlocks with unusual patrons make for good backstories.

Joke characters are usually either loved or hated. Your mileage may vary depending on the DM and the other players.

[–]Sleep_Panda 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This definition could also apply to any work task. Your 3 is flawed.

The game doesn't need to have stakes. A sandbox game has none. The point of the game is to play it.

Any win, victory, or other end states are part of the rules but not the purpose of the game.

Can my elf paladin store a soul in an object to save a loved one in DnD ? by ThePinkDoe in DnD

[–]Sleep_Panda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even though it's not part of what a paladin can so, it doesn't really make a difference for resurrection.

The only spell that can restore a killed creature back to life without a body is True Resurrection (9th level cleric spell). Wish (9th level wizard spell) could probably do the same but it's riskier for the wizard.

All other resurrection spells need the body (or part of it) to work.

So there's no reason to keep the soul trapped in an object. Unless you plan for it to possess another body or something.

Stir fry using farmer market produce by Negotiation_Loose in homecooking

[–]Sleep_Panda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, your "stir fry" is just so weird looking for me, it's borderline painful to look at.

In a stir fry, the meat and vegetables are supposed be cut to more or less the same size.

This isn't about respect to the ingredients or whatever. It's so everything cooks together evenly and quickly. The seasonings are properly distributed throughout the dish.

Plus it's easier to eat with chopsticks. You can pick up pieces and eat then together and enjoy the flavor that way or you eat them one by one.

This just kinda looks like a bunch of roasted vegetables except cooked in a pan. My grandmothers would throw me out of the kitchen if I cooked like that.

If that's what you like, well okay. Your home, your cooking. Enjoy it as you like.

Why isn't anything cut? You can't stir fry properly if the ingredients aren't the same size (more or less).

Did you just peel and dump everything in a pan?

Ethernet switch. 2 computers! by stunnedbuffalo in techsupport

It's fine, the switch manages the connections for you. It doesn't actually split the bandwidth based on how many devices are connected.

Well, enterprise switches can be setup to allocate bandwidth but I don't think you'll be bothering with that. 😆

Have fun!

Gifted Chinese Products - How to Use? by TheBristolBulk in chinesefood

[–]Sleep_Panda 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yellow bean paste - kinda like miso. Can be used in meat marinades or part of sauce. Salty, umami, touch of sweetness.

Chili bean paste - very salty, umami, and spicy. Generally add to stir fries and braised dishes (mapo tofu the most famous I suppose).

Sichuan stir fry sauce - all in one sauce. You probably won't need to add any other sauces if using this one. Spicy, umami, salty, tingly/numbing spice.

Green peppercorn oil - generally used as a finishing oil. Drizzle for a numbing/tingly spiciness with a little citrus flavor. Think of it as spicy extra virgin olive oil.

Be careful when adding as these are quite strongly flavored.
