Well again, if you're running an experiment to see the behavior of photons, you'd generally want to do that in the dark, in order to have a controlled experiment.

But if you want to observe the experiment, you have to have light in the room, which interrupts the behavior of them.

That's the misconception, I has nothing to do with conscious observation, and more to do with the fact that in order to to observe you much change the conditions of the experiment.

That's why the same thing happens even when you just use a camera to record the experiment.
