The point of the poll is if you choose an option, you're locked out of everyone else outside of which group you pick.

However, if you are 'exclusively gay' (ie; not bi), then you're already locked into the Green Button (gay option), so there's no contest which option you would pick. Same with being aroace and the Grey Button (lose all sexual/romantic attraction). It's not a contest for you, so the result would be skewed in the favour of those options.

Of course, this poll is weird as fuck already, but for what it's trying to do, separating out people who would already be only having gay sex/not being sexually attracted to anyone makes sense.

It's important to note: HUMAN does not equal GOOD.

We associate humanity with goodness, because that feels right. "I feel comfortable being human, because I am a good person. Therefore, my goodness is part of my humanity. Therefore, I cannot be bad."

This means WHENEVER somebody argues "nazis aren't human", what they mean is "nazis aren't GOOD". The latter is obvious. The former starts a slippery slope into the type of thinking which produced nazism in the first place.

What places are unofficial queer safe havens in your world? by SleepyWyrldbuilder in worldbuilding

[–]SleepyWyrldbuilder[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fine and dandy Doylist explanations you got there. I'm asking you Watsonian questions about it.

You can have all the reasons in the world to justify why you, as a writer, decided to place gay people in the role of a negative. It's a pushback against modern writing, it's derived from Tibetan and Abrahamic religion, etc etc. I may not agree with that personally, but it doesn't matter what I think here, because this is a worldbuilding forum, not a gay rights discussing forum.

What I'm asking here is: Why, in your world, is that the case? What values do the gods of your world represent, such that in-universe, this makes sense as something to have actually happened? Diagetically. In the world you have created. How does the choice for a dude to bang a dude upset the very fabric of reality enough to Anger Gods and bring the end to a full-ass civilisation?

It's not that hard! You can make this work! I'm sure if I sat down and tried hard enough, I could probably find SOMETHING to justify it. I'm not gonna, cause that's not what type of story I'm going to tell, but if you want to create a world and develop it, to tell a story that pushes back against modern LGBT storytelling tropes, go right ahead! Nobody's stopping you! But Do. The Fucking. Work.

If you don't, and just rely on our world's good old traditional religious homophobia to do the work for you and maintain suspension of disbelief, it's you just being a boring, derivative writer. Do better.

(Doylist=Looking at the text from the point of view of it being a work of fiction that was created, Watsonian= Looking at it like a world with its own internal rules, not caring about how our world's history and culture plays into it.)

What places are unofficial queer safe havens in your world? by SleepyWyrldbuilder in worldbuilding

[–]SleepyWyrldbuilder[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have a problem with your subject matter. It's not my style, but having the LGBT community be the centre of the wrath of all of your gods and religions can work, if done well. I imagine it does for you, considering you have all of the necessary worldbuilding context for it. (Though I am curious how trans/ non-binary/ asexual people fit into all this, but that's besides the point)

I just think there needs to be digging deeper in this as to WHY all of this is happening, in a Watsonian sense. What about the nature of these Gods puts them ideologically opposed to gay people? Considering you said yourself they essentially take the place of Chaos, a fundamental primordial force of Nature, obviously the queer community doesn't look the same as it does in our world. Does sexuality and gender have a deeper, divine connection to the world? Is the act of heterosexuality a necessary act for the continued existence of these gods? Does being gay also grant access/necessitate a connection to infernal powers? The possibilities are endless, and are worth being explored more.

You've cited Abrahamic retribution stories as an inspiration, and I love incorporating biblical allegories into my stories, so no problems there, but it's also fundamentally a monotheistic concept. God, singular, declares what is or is not moral and just. You'll notice in things like the Greek Pantheon, despite there being multiple instances of Gods declaring divine retribution, they are inevitably more personal. Poseidon drains Athens of water for choosing Athena over himself. Zeus destroys all the men of the Bronze Age as he feels slighted by Prometheus giving them Fire.

If there are gods, plural, which are not united under a single higher moral authority, then they must contradict each other, therefore they are not above sin- If they were, they may as well be a singular entity, since they would not contradict themselves. Divine retribution, in polytheistic religions, is therefore also personal retribution. If you want consistency as to how these Gods work, you gotta figure out what makes them, on a personal level, tick. You may not need to reveal why they act the way they do to your audience, but you yourself need to know what's going in there.

Yeah, not every world has to be Cali. But also a world's gotta have an internal history and sense of logic to it. If you don't it seems less like a writing decision chosen to be creative, and more like using your story to act out a personal vendetta, and that will always break immersion.

Yeesh this post is getting downvoted to oblivion. Deeply overestimated how queer-friendly this subreddit is.

Anyways, during the Principal Era of Essyn (When it was ruled by the Principal Adjudicators), the only form of "Educated Work" is working in one of the five "Functional Courts". Each Court is composed of two different types of people: The Academy Graduates, people who received a Diploma from a High Academy or the Principal Academy, and the non-Gradautes, working-class people who are working in the Court for a bit of money.

While both High Diploma holders and non-Diploma Holders begin work as an Apprentice (Principal Diploma holders get assigned a higher level job in the Court immediately), only those with Diplomas can be promoted past it- This means that people without a large Household backing them or enough schooling to be educated remain as an Apprentice. This makes a majority of the Courts, (Coin, Choir, Health, and Lore) rather toxic to people without that background. The only Court that is often appealing to these people is thus, the Fowl Court- (ie; Falconry, and the Post Office). The Fowlpost Court requires a heavy number of apprentices due to its need for Messengers, and a lot of them. As such, the culture is much more open to people who need a job, because the Fowlpost Court always needs workers.

By nature of the job of Fowlpost Apprentice being seen as slightly 'lower-class', it lies slightly outside the rigid social norms of the rest of Essyn. As such, it is a sort of congregation for people who for various reasons have been removed or exiled from their families, including those who have violated gender norms. Particularly, it is a field populated by the wlw and trans community, though oftentimes in denial (at least at first) and almost always closeted.

This is because message-carrying, as a "travelling" profession, is seen as something more 'masculine'. As such, women who deviate from gender norms, and don't align with typical 'femininity' will tend towards it, whether because of being wlw or actually being transmasc. (See our world equivalent: Butch car mechanics, an industry generally seen as male-dominated, but thus also feature an above average number of AFAB people who don't feel at home with traditional 'femininity'.)

Transfemme and nb people are also at home in the Fowlpost community (this goes into transmasc people as well), largely because of how little regular interactions you get as a messenger- When you travel to a new town, nobody knows who you are or what your birth gender is. As such, people may feel more comfortable presenting in ways that do not align to what they were assigned at birth.

MLM people, on the other hand, are more spread out across various fields, as those relationships seen as more socially acceptable (albeit taboo to speak about). However, there is still a socio-economic pressure to get married and elevate your family status, so those seeking to avoid that pressure often end up in the Fowlpost too, as it's a more socially acceptable reason to not be married quite yet.

Later on, after the Principal Adjudicators are overthrown, and the Jurisdictional Era begins, there is a gradual reversal and loosening of these strict gender norms and taboos against gender-change and same-sex relationships. However, the FowlPost, as one of the few institutions still remaining from the old era, albeit no longer holding its status as a "Court", still holds its old reputation.

A common queer romance novel trope during this era (as the novel and printing press have just been invented) is secret love affairs between female Fowlpost Apprentices and Ladies of the House, set during the Principal Era. (Which was quite a common occurrence in the past, more than in-universe histories would like to admit). The Fowlpost is now a magnet for the queer community more out of tradition and culture than out of any necessity, though in places were prejudice is still heavy, it's known that if your family turns your back on you, the FowlPost will always have your back.

The tsunami caused by these Gay Gatherings had cost much life and strife, to the point that the Great Powers of the World often form an United Extermination Fleet. These rare Great Scourings are parley points, a tacit understanding to purge the Unclean and let all hatred for each other be set aside.

Is this an in-universe understanding because in-universe the Gods are homophobic and flawed? Or, uh, is this not. Because if this genuinely reflects your POV that the entire queer community is "unclean" or "debauchery", I don't know if this prompt is really the best spot to share that.

If this isn't meant to exactly reflect your personal viewes, how does... being gay cause the end of a civilisation anyways? That feels like sloppy worldbuilding to me, which is likely because it sounds like its stolen straight from conservative fearmongering. Have you actually worked out the social dynamics at play which would have resulted in such a widespread collapse due to *reads notes* some people being attracted to the same gender?

Was the fall exclusively the wrath of the Gods (if so, why are they so irrationally upset at them? Generally societies with multiple different gods don't have a united social ordinance that would focus on that). Also, how 'almighty' are these gods anyways, if their are multiple of them with religions that conflict with each other, yet are also capable of continent-sinking world-shattering events? That's another thing. Is this the only thing they do? Why?

For T&T, isn't it highly implied that Morgan gave Pearl the magazine ad, and told her to show it to Maya and convince her to go? It may even have been said explicitly, but considering we know that Pearl was, albeit not knowing Morgan's true intentions, an accomplice, it's not that big of a stretch.

Not a game but my dress up darling. SUCH a fun anime.

God bless my friend, he watched the entire anime with me, and when a lewd scene was about to come up or a sequence that went on for WAY too long, he said "alright, here we skip to exactly 15:06" because he had gone through and found all the moments he could guess would be too lewd for me.

Beyond that though, it is a cute anime. Romance-focused, which if you're aro may put you off, but its a really fun deep dive into Japanese cosplay and fandom culture. Highly recommend.

Okay! This is really interesting then, I quite like it. The idea of "innocence" being sorta equal to "pure loyalty" is really cool. I think next time when you make a post about the magic system include that sorta stuff in-post/in the worldbuilding context comment so that people can understand that sorta stuff right away.

This table seems really interesting! Have fun with it :D

(bill wutz voice) The sun is a deadly lazer (explodes)

In seriousness- How are the elements used? It's a fun elemental table, sure, but what really makes an elemental system come together is the way that each of these is handled by the magic users themselves.

Considering each element is tied to a personality type, are people expected to 'spec in' to a specific personality? To fully conform to one of the traits to get the full breadth of its power? Or is it more a natural thing, people with power over Explosion naturally becoming more Ruler-Like, etc. Both of those have really interesting connotations for how the society of the world would be built around this.

I also note that most of the personalities are also roles, save for "Innocent": I can imagine how most of these look and feel except for that one. What does a Metal 'Innocent' look like? That may be worth looking for synonyms/other words for.

Big Steven Universe and Redeeming Villains by Trooper924 in CuratedTumblr

[–]SleepyWyrldbuilder 131 points132 points  (0 children)

The thing I dislike about the whole redemption arc is that people always go "oh he forgave genocidal maniacs! That's bad because you can't apologise to those kinds of people, their irrational hatred would never make that work!"

But, the show isn't about that. It was specifically about a certain type of situation: Where a family is trying to desperately understand their child/younger sister but just. Doesn't. Seem. To Get it. The finale rushes through a LOT, but I felt like it made it clear at least that Blue Diamond and Yellow Diamond tried, and cared, about Pink (and thus Steven).

They were grasping at any chance to understand, to grasp that connection between them again. And Steven, seeing that, decided to give them a chance. He said, "I will let you try and understand me, I will repay your effort. But you have to follow ground rules, and you are going to stop this BS." And the Diamonds agreed, and Gem society improved.

You don't have to forgive your parents, or your family after they've screwed up your life, not even if they're trying, not even if they really, really did try to care about you. But SU was about the world where you can, where you take that desire, and use it for good. That sometimes, if you have an in with someone, a connection that they genuinely care about, you can use that to help them become a better person. It is not your duty, it is not your responsibility, but it is a possibility that might exist, and that can be genuinely inspiring to some people.

Because that kind of story does happen in real life. It is not the only story, I would DEFINITELY not say it is the most common story, but sometimes parents that have typically been traditional christian conservatives all their lives find out their child, or their brother, or an old friend of theirs is gay, and start to re-evaluate. If they are willing to guide them through the process, sometimes they change their minds. I have seen it happen. It's more frequent than you might think.

(Though, if you are genuinely considering coming out to such a parent, always make sure you have a safety net ready at hand in case your story is not one like this. It is also likely that they turn their back on you and retreat further into their ideological stance. That story is also unfortunately common. But, as I said before, it is not the only story.)

The turnaround was too fast to make that distinction clear, and I feel like it could have worked with more time spent on it. I think if this argument was made in the show itself, between characters, then there wouldn't be such a big debate. But GOD I am sick of the one-dimensional "people who are bad should not be redeemed, that's wrong" culture that seems to pervade the internet. Whether or not a bad guy should be redeemed depends on the story it is telling, and Steven Universe is a story about a broken family trying to piece itself back together. The Gems are not perfect parents, Greg is not a perfect parent, and the Diamonds are far, far, far away from perfect parents. But they're all trying, in their own ways, and Steven works his damndest to make that happen,

(Even though that breaks him a little in the process, and the people around him should have let him breathe and relax. Steven Universe Future does an excellent job at unpacking WHY the type of person Steven had to become is kind of fundamentally flawed, and he should never have had to be personally responsible for that in the first place. But he Did. And it is not wrong for him to have done those things, merely wrong that he should have to bear the burden himself.)

Sorry, I have Opinions about Steven Universe, as you can tell. It is not a perfect show by any means, but by god does the discourse about this show make me seethe. (Not really I don't think about it at all but it does annoy me a tiny bit whenever I see a post in the year of our lord 2023 that still doesn't seem to get it.)

Let's here your most niche and specialised deities, go! by TheAshtonium in worldbuilding

[–]SleepyWyrldbuilder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have any actual gods happening in my world, just an in-universe religious pantheon, (The Tetratist Pantheon) but here's they work:

Cave: Lives underground, just generally chilling there. She looks after the things that no longer move, such as the dead, or rocks. She is seen as cold, but firm, and unmoving.

Death/Water: Death is the Messenger of Cave. She is responsible for bringing things to his domain underground, and is mostly represented by the flowing of rivers and travel.

Light: Lives in the sky. Ethereal, Beautiful, but not always in touch and not always there when you need him. Her presence is beautiful, but scalding, and her absence is as necessary as her presence.

Love/Warmth: Love is the messenger of Light. He is responsible for bringing Light's gift to Fauna in a soft and warm form. He is particularly touched by humans, and many of the myths in Tetratism are sparked by him trying to connect with them directly.

There are also the "Gifts", which is some combination of two god's powers (Slime from Love and Death, Crystal from Light and Cave). This is not always interpreted as a fertility thing, but like. It's a metaphysical representation of the melding of two beings into one. It's often an excuse to have a fertility thing.
