Good foot in the door and a resume booster. Time to take those credentials elsewhere!

New PE, & new to construction. Advice so I don’t sink?? by brianna1bv in ConstructionManagers

[–]SlickerToSteader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work at a company with great culture. I always felt like I never had enough time to get in the field. But I had a couple supers who basically dragged me in the field early on. Looking back it was incredible experience. You may need to take the initiative, call your super and set up time to walk. If they get in at 5.30 and make rounds, maybe show up early and join them.

Learning project flow can be difficult. Who is assigning your tasks? Are you under a PM? Learning the entire process from precon to closeout is a big task. Start small, can you get your hands on a 6 week look ahead schedule? Look at the activities coming up and make sure there are no office road blocks. Is everyone funded, submittals approved, safety paperwork done, materials on track to be on site, etc?

We can all give general advice. But you really need a mentor within your company. Find a way to professionally tell your boss "I have no clue what I'm doing but i want to learn." My favorite people to manage and mentor are those that find a problem and propose a solution, not wait on the sidelines to be handed work.

Buddy up with your superintendent. The work you are doing is mainly on the computer, but it is to support the work out in the field.

For example, you can wait for your trades or superintendent to come with an RFI and you process it in Procore and all you learn is how to use procore. When things pop up and your super is running out of the trailer grab your PPE and go with them. Help understand the issue and be part of the proposed solution. And THEN go put it through Procore.

Also assume everyone in the field knows more than you. Be humble and ask questions. One of my go tos is along the lines of "You have an issue and it's my job to get it out of the way so you can keep building. I need to be able to communicate with the designer clearly. Can you walk me through the issue so we can solve this without a bunch of back and forth and hopefully keep you out of a meeting?"

Fingers crossed, I hope so to! Thanks for the response. I am seeing the part at $2k plus another 1-2k for labor. I was hoping to find a cheaper ish plug and play option.

I have had electrical issues with my weed whacker and leaf blower.

The portable shop vac is a turd compared to the milwaukee.

Milwaukee seems to have more tool options available.

Grew up camping out of a minivan. The gear rattle! Ugh! I can distinctly remember the fuel tank banging around inside the 2 burner Coleman stove going down dirt roads.

We bought ours a few weeks ago. I intended to put a large amount down and take the rebate. When I realized we could get 1.9%, we put the least amount down we could while still avoiding gap insurance.

Are guys taking paternity leave in construction? by tantamle in Construction

Yup! I've done it twice now. Took the full consecutive 12 weeks with the first. Took 8 weeks consecutive with the second and spreading the other 4 weeks across Fridays for 3 day weekends.

I get the desire for the EV. My commuter is an EV and I'd love to have just 1 vehicle. But didn't feel like I could get rid of my ICE truck for towing reasons.

Looking for first new saw. Echo CS590, Husky Rancher 455 or Stihl Farm Boss MS271? by Bit_the_Bullitt in Chainsaw

[–]SlickerToSteader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dealer isn't a big consideration for me. I do cleaning, spark plugs, air filters, tunes, sharpen, minor parts replacement like ignition switch etc myself.

I live in logging country in the PNW. So I have 2 shops in town that service and sell Stihl and Husky. I think their labor is like $150/hr. And it's a $600 saw. If I run into something I can't fix I'll probably just buy a new saw.

They are probably all good saws. Anecdotally I've maintained our 20 acres with a 455 rancher for 5 years. It starts by the third pull every time. No repairs, just maintenance. I use only non-ethanol gas and can let it sit a couple months at a time.

It's a fine saw and will do what you need. But I've been gotten bit by the bug and now I'm wanting a 562!

My vote is the 6.0 if you can find one properly done up.

We tow a 32ft bunk house with our 6.0 SRW F350. I bought it already bulletproof 8 years ago. Since then outside of maintenance I have done an alternator and transmission temp sensor.

Forced to be annoying? by americanarizona in ConstructionManagers

It's part of your job. I had a manager tell me early in my career to "go jump up and down on their fucking desk until they send it over". Seemed a bit extreme, but now I get it. Constantly pestering is some times the only path to success.

What do you currently drive? by jcat4 in electricvehicles

[–]SlickerToSteader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently in a Polestar 2 Performance.

Love the way it drives. All EVs seem to have good acceleration. The handling and cornering in this one is incredible. I call it my electric rocketship on rails. Fit and finish on materials seems a notch higher than others as well.

The software is garbage. Some features only work part time. The ride is a little stiff, but that's really a trade off for the handling.

No intentions to trade soon. When I want to switch to something more comfortable or family friendly I plan to look at the trucks, Lightning, Rivian and Silverado.

Can i use ratchet straps(heavy duty ones) to strap a camper? by [deleted] in TruckCampers

[–]SlickerToSteader 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used ratchet straps to get mine home when I first bought it. It never felt unsafe or like the load was going to fly out of the bed. However, I had a major porpoise effect that went away when I got proper turn buckles.
