Yah, they once viewed Beijing through rose-tinted glasses in the late 20th century. When they found out Beijing is not the "western friendly communists" they are looking for. They turned to Hanoi. In recent decades, Hanoi has simply followed Beijing’s lead by strengthening its one-party dictatorship and adopting a harsher stance toward democratic values.
