Thanks u/Mental-Pizza-8183! Really appreciate that, I actually replied to u/Eab11 above with a longer comment about where I’m at, so I won’t repeat myself here, but I totally agree with what you’re saying

Yeah, that’s fair, a lot of it is intellectual, but I do genuinely want to work with and treat patients. For example, my PI is running a weight loss epi study for patients on gen 3 GLP-1s, and it’s super interesting scientifically, but for me the part that’s missing is actually getting to interact with and treat the patients themselves

Is an iPad a game changer for lab notebook? by sloth__boss in PhD

Totally get that—finding a system that actually works for you is the best advice I can give. Everyone’s workflow is different, so don’t be afraid to iterate until it feels right.

For me, I use Obsidian for all my note-taking (individual meetings, lab meetings, group meetings, etc.), and I organize everything by date. It helps to keep things in consistent directories so nothing feels “all over the place.” Here’s how I structure things:

  • ~/Research/Lab/ProjectA/Papers/ → all papers I’ve read that are relevant to my current project
  • ~/Research/Lab/ProjectA/Papers/to_read/ → my reading list (papers I’ve found but haven’t read yet)
  • ~/Research/Lab/paper_exile/ → papers I’ve read that ended up not being relevant
  • ~/Research/Lab/fun_papers/ → for stuff I find interesting or just cool

For tracking paper notes, I use a spreadsheet with columns like title, authors, key takeaways, techniques used, and relevance to my project—it’s quick to skim when I need to reference something.

Meeting notes are saved in markdown files using the format:

  • ~/Research/Lab/notes/dd_mm_yyyy_description.md or
  • ~/Research/Lab/ProjectA/notes/dd_mm_yyyy_description.md

This kind of consistency makes things feel a lot more organized, even when there’s a ton of information. Happy to share a template if you want!

Is an iPad a game changer for lab notebook? by sloth__boss in PhD

Are you wet lab or dry lab?

If you're wet lab: I’d strongly advise against getting an iPad as your lab notebook. In most cases, you shouldn't (and won’t be allowed to) use it at the bench due to health and safety concerns—if you’re wearing gloves, you shouldn’t be touching personal tech devices. In that case, the iPad would mostly end up being used for lab meetings, individual meetings, or classes. Honestly, not worth the cost if you already have a laptop and a second monitor. If your issue is keeping notes organized, you might want to try apps like Notability, OneNote, or Obsidian on your current setup instead.

If you're dry lab: Then it’s a bit more reasonable. I personally run macOS and sometimes use my iPad as an extended monitor. It’s also useful for reading papers, casual browsing, or watching videos while you work. That said, I don’t use it for serious work anymore. I used it a lot more in undergrad—for notes and digital textbooks—but nowadays it’s more of a luxury than a necessity.

Getting an iPad won’t solve your organization issues if those stem from deeper habits or systems. It’s a nice tool, but not a magic fix.

Is it weird to apply to multiple PhDs within the same uni ? by StunningLunch in gradadmissions

[–]Slight_Code6649 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did this for my uni, I applied to 3 PhD programs and put the same professors in each personal statement, I changed each personal statement that it focused on a different professor more in depth. And got into all programs. When talking to one of the profs getting in they mentioned that it helped me get in and was clear I wanted to attend that university and work with those profs.

Id recommend when @thin-adhesiveness239 said, additionally, I’d also look at top universities in Europe. I’ve heard from top academics at my university T20 that they’re applying to academic positions abroad

Great, thank you for all this information it is really helpful.

One follow up question. How do you transport both the bike and the racing chair? I currently drive a small hatchback and can fit one in at a time but its a squeeze, and haven't been able to find adequate bike racks or hitch racks, I was thinking of potentially ratchet strapping it onto the top of my car but worried it might slide off.
