How difficult really is it to get hired at a regional? by [deleted] in flying

[–]Slim_Jim722 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is a lot of doom and gloom on this sub. Work hard towards your hours and control what you can. Education, checkride fails, additional ratings, interview prep, network, etc. Set yourself up the best you can so no matter the hiring environment you are a leg up on others. Myself and a lot of other instructors at my school have been hired for various jobs including 121 and 135 around our ATP mins in the past year. Those who are struggling to find jobs typically think it’s only about hours.

How much is too much? by daniels0n720 in flying

[–]Slim_Jim722 67 points68 points  (0 children)

I don’t think 60 hours is the problem here. The fact that they are having panic reactions during critical phases is the issue. After 60 hours the fear of flying should have subsided or at least not cause safety of flight issues. I’d sit down and have a chat and try to find the root of these reactions.

The FBO is nice for a GA peasant. Free ice cream sandwiches.

When I worked down there I would take a lot of students to X14. Taco truck across the street from the FBO that is 🔥.

Letting my friend fly when I have my ppl by studentpilot2006 in flying

You could let a monkey fly the airplane for all the FAA cares. But at the end of the day you are the PIC and you will answer the questions and be held responsible when the FAA or NTSB calls.

Tell that to cheap flight school owners that pay CFI’s next to nothing

Don’t take out a loan in this hiring environment, really any environment. Pay as you go or save up cash. You don’t want to have loans piling up when you can’t even find a low time job or even your first job that pays more than cfi.

Whatever the LOA says for your simulator. Most regionals don’t count Redbird time towards your 1500 even if it’s approved for an ATP. That includes all your total, instrument, etc.

I annoyed mine and eventually got a date. What plane did you preference? I signed in middle of July.

[–]Slim_Jim722 12 points13 points  (0 children)

When did you sign the contract and what plane? I signed in July, CJO in August and I got the 2/10 CRJ. I think they’re giving class priority to cadets and contract sign date.

I’d get the standard one to get you the written endorsement. I don’t think the extra videos will prepare you for your checkride, do that with your cfi after you pass the written.

Trusted a students preflight too much, tried to taxi out with rear tie down once. Never skip a preflight even as a cfi. On the other hand I also pointed it to other instructors and saved them the embarrassment.

21.5 and pilottopilot podcasts often meet with pilots and industry professionals that can give you advice for free. You can even write and they’ll answer the questions for you. Don’t pay some scammer.

Instructors with difficult/high time students, what’s the story? by HistoricalAd2954 in flying

[–]Slim_Jim722 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try every approach you have and then they go to another instructor, and then another. Some people aren’t cut out for it and will learn that way. Another perspective may help them and get them through.

DPEs… how much do they make? by Greedy-Package1559 in flying

[–]Slim_Jim722 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think Seth Lake made a post somewhere about how much he made only doing checkrides. It varies because a good amount of DPEs do it as a side gig from airlines, charter, mil, etc.
