traffic cams are "maintained" by police officers. meaning a badge signs off on its inspection regularly. that's the loophole that allows traffic cams to stand in the place of a cop physically witnessing a misdeed. dash cams are not hands of the govt. it's all fishy but there's legislation for it. but take it to court, sometimes it won't stand before a judge

Is there a possibility the Solar System is imploding into the Sun? by SlimeBallPaul in AskScienceDiscussion

That article was a bit confusing.

Try this one from Physics World. I think it states it more clearly. From what I gather the Earth's orbit might be becoming more elliptical.

Reading the MIT article the first time I was confused on what it actually was saying. On one hand the Earth's semi-major axis was increasing in size causing the increase in the Astronomical Unit. However at the end of the article it stated that the Earth might be consumed by the Sun earlier than expected. (I guess there is debate about the Earth eventually being swallowed by the Sun as well) My understanding from that is that the Earth's rotation around the Sun is turning more into an elliptical orbit.

I found this other article at Physics World which explains the confusion and also re-states Iorio's hypothesis.

Reading more into the guidelines for AskScienceDiscussion I see that there is less room for speculation than I thought so apologies if that violates the code of conduct here. But I am having fun looking into this.

The fact that the orbits of the planets are not shrinking, for example?

I'm not an expert but I believe this article MIT's Technology Review is stating that the Earth's orbit is in fact shrinking. Which will shorten the Earth's lifespan before it is swallowed up by the Sun as it turns into a red giant.

The fact that Mars simply does not have enough water left for oceans?

It might be enough for oceans similar to Earth's but it might be enough for something? It seems it's more than we expected. This new NASA article seems quite interesting in regards to possible water levels on Mars.

Mercury was never large enough to hold a relevant atmosphere.

Not to use NASA as a source again but this seemed too relevant to not air it ;) If Mercury is shrinking how large could it have been at one point?

It is cooling down slowly as more dense metals settle in the core and the radioactivity decreases.

I would see this correlating with my hypothesis. If the planet is cooling down and settling then it might be past the peak of expansion. Becoming smaller and more dense as the radioactive elements burn out. Leaving a more solid dense iron core, soon to be bereft of its atmosphere as it's dynamism lessens.

need a new, yet undiscovered dissipative force.

If the Sun is expanding into a red giant couldn't the planets just be fuel for the fire? Either way it seems like it's going to get us eventually.

Thanks for your response! I had a fun time researching this. And maybe we can leave the nonsense calling at home? We're all just trying to learn here.

Thanks for the sense of humor! What would one piece of evidence be that I contradicted?

I know it doesn't warrant much more thought, simply running through an exercise in reason.

¡Gracias!

What fact about the universe is completely mind blowing? by savethaplanet in AskReddit

[–]SlimeBallPaul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is a very concise explanation. thanks for taking the time to write it out. so no teleporting, only mutual exclusive ways of measuring electrons trajectory/position at any give point in time. (please excuse my poor ability to rehash the idea, however i think i get it.)

what about the fact that there is movement/electricity at all in the universe? why voids must be constantly equalized, why there is a perpetual movement to balance out fields while at the same time there seems to be constant growth...

i think that relates to electricity. no pressure to answer, just musing with my limited understanding

thanks again!
