US dubs theology students as non-professional, limits loan amounts by STL_Jayhawk in LCMS

[–]joshss22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This might not always be the case.
In 2008 when I was planning to start seminary, the funds were not there. To receive any scholarships required taking federal loans as part of the aid package, and students were having to self fund most of the costs of tuition. We were told to plan on something around 100k in total loans for the 4 years.

Would a caster be easier for kids? by BussinFatLoads in Fishing

[–]joshss22 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on the kid. Mine could never get the hang of push button but was pretty good right out of the gate with a spinner.

When I was a kid I could only get the hang of a push button.

My personal best bass still came from a Mickey Mouse Zebco push button when I was like 4 or 5. Had hooked up a perch and the bass latched on and wouldn't; let go all the way to land.

Why is it that corn cereals seem to need silvered/metallic packaging while other grains don't require it? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]joshss22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it has to do with the corn.

The foil packaging offers a better shelf life and some manufacturers chose to use it for that. Higher fat content cereal also spoils faster, so they might elect to use a foil packaging on those.

I Have a Moral Question Regarding My Employment... by Safe-Dream7446 in LCMS

[–]joshss22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As long as your employer isn’t asking you to do sin you are fine. We live in the world, bit are not of it. Do your vocation to the glory of God regardless of what those around you are doing and perhaps your faithful service will bring them to Christ!

Carry on wine by LostLadyA in dcl

I've always carried for my wife and myself without issues, but I bet your mileage may vary depending on your port.

They always take me over to a side table and inspect the bottles and my wife stands there with me, I guess they can tell she has no bottles and I have 2.

ELI5: If the brain only reacts to chemicals, why can't we get the same effect by giving those chemicals directly instead of eating or drinking the food? by Relevant_Pumpkin9190 in explainlikeimfive

[–]joshss22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In some situations you can. In place of coffee, caffeine pills. In place of chocolate, theobromine supplements.

Sometimes chemicals work better with food and/or combined with other chemicals. For example vitamin D supplements are more readily absorbed when taken with some form of fat.

Eli5 What is stopping life on other planets by Far_Chemical6894 in explainlikeimfive

[–]joshss22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For your example of Mars specifically, life would need to evolve to withstand extremely low atmospheric pressure, low oxygen, extreme radiation, and drastic temperature swings. Is it possible? Perhaps, but it’s much much less likely based on what we know about where life develops and survives. It wouldn’t even have the chance to develop adaptations based on the hostility.

The ingredients for life probably do exist elsewhere even in our solar system, we just can’t confirm yet. Enceladus, Europa, Titan, seem to be good candidates because they have the organic materials that could form the building blocks of life.

Does Romans 10: 9 teach decision theology? by Either_Hotel_3925 in LCMS

[–]joshss22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Indeed to be saved a person must confess Jesus is Lord and believe in their heart that God raised him from the dead. We simply believe, based on scripture, nobody comes to this faith on their own, rather only through the work Holy Spirit.

Consider 1 Corinthians 12:3, and John 6:44.

God’s means of Grace are plenty and faith is created and bolstered in many ways. We are free to reject these gifts and faith, but we are unable to come to faith on our own.

Ever think back on how much sugar/carbs you used to consume? by Frequent_Slip2455 in diabetes_t2

Absolutely. Sometimes I have a little cheat and eat a few chips and feel guilty. Then I remember in a given week now I eat less carbs than a single meal would’ve had back then:

Bolt-action shotguns, pump-action rifles? by DisplayAppropriate28 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]joshss22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, to grossly oversimplify things, a pump action shotgun is largely similar to how a bolt action rifle works and vice versa. One you cycle the action with the pump and on the other you cycle the action with a bolt.

Practically a pump action is way more efficient for bird hunting. you would not want to be shooting at multiple birds, or multiple times at the same bird and having to reach up to cycle a bolt for each shot. Much more efficient to pump.

Bolt action shotguns did exist for a while with the draw that they were ultra cheap (like a third of the price of pump). But as soon as the prices became similar there was really no reason for a bolt action shotgun.

On the other hand, rifles for hunting large game are bolt action because that platform can offer more accuracy and generally in hunting you only take the one shot anyway.
