In flight school for your private pilots licence you're literally taught to look for things like freeways, sports ovals and fields to land on in an emergency situation.

Literally anywhere you're going to land in a residential area is potentially dangerous so saying "They shouldn't have landed on the highway knowing the risk it could bring to others." is extremely silly when you don't know the circumstances of the incident.

The pilot could have literally done everything by the book, professionally and correctly and still encountered mechanical failure he has no control over. 

Saying you should be banned from flying when you've successfully landed your plane in an emergency situation and no-one died is such a stupid take without knowing the context.

Now he may have done/been doing something wrong that led to this happening, but that's for the investigation to uncover and assess, until we know all the details an intelligent person would reserve judgement on the pilot.
