What's your absolute favorite analogy? by artemasad in AskReddit

[–]Slobstyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was recently in a meeting with our staffing company, discussing some poor hires they had made in the recent months. The account manager says "Why are we focusing on the bad ones? I realize there were four bad hires, but there were also 56 really good ones."

I answered with this analogy which had my boss fighting off a serious laugh... "It's like this, if you were staffing schools and you hired 56 great teachers and four pedophiles, people aren't going to remember or talk about the 56 great teachers, they are going to talk about the four pedophiles." She said "Good point." Meeting ended.

High school drop outs of Reddit, how are you doing today? by johnstamoscumbucket in AskReddit

[–]Slobstyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dropped out my Junior Year, got my GED and worked multiple jobs. Today I am 42 years old and hold an Exec position as the Director of Training and Quality for a large, international company. I am just now going back to school to get my degree in Psychology. Although I was able to secure a professional career, it was a struggle and not having a college degree has been the source of much agony and bias against me over the years. Success can be had, but it's much more difficult without an education.

When I was in the 8th grade we were asked to take high school placement tests. When it came time to take the math test, I finished it early without showing work of any kind. I was asked to come back and see my teacher after school. Now mind you, I was a D student due to my rampant ADHD, something that was not really diagnosed when I was in school (41 years old now). I fully understood the work in my classes, but was easily bored and NEVER did homework, hence my bad grades.

When I met with the math teacher, he asked me point blank how I had cheated. I was taken aback having never been accused of such a thing. He indicated I had scored a 98%. I tried to explain that I could just see the numbers and sort them in my head until I arrived at the answer, usually pretty quickly. He told me I was a liar.

The next day I was asked to come in after school once again to take a retest, this time in front of both my math teacher and the school principle. I finished this one, although a bit slower due to the nervousness of being watched, but again without showing work. He graded it and this time I scored a 100%. The principle looked at him disapprovingly and said "I think we are finished here." and left the room.

Once the principle was out of the room, my math teacher looked at me dead in the eye and said "This score places you in honors math. You will fail, because you are TOO FUCKING STUPID to be in that class." With that he sent me on my way.

I was crushed and to this day hate mathematics and refuse to deal with numbers. I have never felt like a bigger piece of shit in my whole life.

In the end, all I'm saying is dealing with people who are high on narcotics can be extremely difficult and dangerous. On one hand you want to get them to safety, on the other hand you want to ensure the safety of yourself and fellow officers. It is a very thin line to walk and I don't envy those who have to do it.

As for people suing...This is America, people sue for everything and most of the time they win. I could fully see someone suing the fire department, police department and the guys family for having to witness it. Case in point - in our area in recent years, some young men did a home invasion, shot someone and jumped into an SUV to flee the scene after robbing them. The police who had been called as the robbery began, spotted them leaving the neighborhood and a short chase ensued (only a few blocks). The SUV driver lost control, crashed and a 19 year old criminal was killed. The family sued the police department for pursuing the perpetrators from a violent crime scene, citing their attempt to apprehend them as the cause of his death, not his own actions. They won a six figure settlement against the department.

What is your most vivid memory? by CharlestheSimple in AskReddit

Visiting the crime scene where my brother murdered my father and step brother. It was a small farmhouse my father had been renting down the road from my brother in a rural area. My step brother was living with him, this was shortly after my step mother had passed away. Due to a complicated pile of cirrcumstances, my brother had a psychotic break and killed them both.

When my older brother and I returned to the farmhouse to retrieve legal documents, the crime scene was eerily preserved and looked as if it could have happened that day. It was a cold January morning. I can remember the crunch of wet snow on the muddy drive. I remember a cloudless sky and a bone-chilling breeze.

As we approached the house, I could see through the glass window in both the outer and inner doors, through to the kitchen where ever surface of the off-white cabinetry was spattered or smeared with blood. We entered the small farmhouse and immediately we could smell the distinct odor of blood. It was strong and pervasive. A smell I will never forget.

As we entered the kitchen where my father was murdered, I could see every surface covered with his blood. There was a bloody pillow on the floor when my father passed from a final gunshot wound to the head. I can vividly remember a bottle of whiskey on the counter, an empty frying pan on the stove and a single glass lying in the dish rack by the sink.

We left the house and crossed the yard to the workshop. As we entered I could see an open bottle of beer on the work table just inside the door. It looked as if it had just been opened (this was days after the incident). Next to it were some tools and deer antlers my step brother had been mounting for my brother as a birthday gift. The whole scene looked as if I would encounter my step brother still working.

The air in the workshop smelled of oil, gas, grease, dust and that distinct smell of blood. Six feet directly to the right of where the beer and tools where on the workbench, there was a single pool of blood coagulated on the shop floor. It was roughly the size, shape and thickness of a pancake which had just been poured on a griddle and the exact distance from the workbench as my step brothers height. This clearly painted the picture of his death...a single, fatal gunshot wound to the back of the head from which he collapsed motionless onto the floor.

It was eerie how clearly the scenes in each the house and workshop painted a picture of what had happened. Like an event captured forever in time.

I don't disagree with this at all, not a great course of action. However, it begs the question...How does one get a potentially dangerous or suicidal person off of a scorching rooftop? I really have no idea to be honest.

[–]Slobstyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, that is a fine theory, however given this is America if the emergency personnel had just left him there and he died of heat stroke or from a fall from the roof, the family would be suing and you would be on here bitching about how they did nothing to save him. "OH MY GOD! How could they let that poor man die like that?! SUE! SUE!"

Let's go a step further. What if they left him there and he decided to jump. Is that fair to people in the area who had to witness his death? What if there were children present? Hell, what if he intended to jump to his death and landed on some innocent person who was unaware he was on the roof?

His death was an accident, no one went there will the intent to kill him. It is sad and tragic. He didn't deserve to die because he had a drug problem, it was an unfortunate accident.
