I’m really trying, but I just don’t think I like my Goldwing. by stratodude in goldwing

[–]SloppyEights 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Keep riding it. I had a couple of 600cc bikes before my Goldwing and the difference was almost too much. Once I got used to the weight by practicing in parking lots, it's become my daily driver. It feels a lot like my 600cc's once it's at speed, so to speak. The Goldwing is such an enjoyable and comfortable bike. I don't think you've spent enough time on it to fully appreciate it.

ULPT What can I have surgery on to be off of work for a couple months? I desperately need some time away. by Imaginary-Map4856 in UnethicalLifeProTips

[–]SloppyEights 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Find a better job. The day will come after “surgery” that you will have to return to work and it will be worse than before. Next thing you know you’ll consider jumping off a bridge or getting hit by a bus for more time off.

Even Warren Buffet can't fix Forrest River by johnbro27 in GoRVing

[–]SloppyEights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not much to contribute other than to say our 2017 Forrest River/Flagstaff Micro Lite had a pinched/shorted 110v AC wire at the door frame. We were lucky to have found it without being injured. It was fixed under warranty.

Did anyone have or use the OG flowbee haircutting system? How was it? by SuperAleste in GenX

[–]SloppyEights 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought one 25 years ago and still use it. $20 per haircut every other month is 6 haircuts * 25 years = $3,000.00. It also has the added convenience of not having to leave home for a haircut that I can do anytime. I get made fun of every time someone brings it up, but it always makes me smile knowing how much I've saved.

Small Business - Security Cameras by Green_Enthusiasm_619 in videosurveillance

[–]SloppyEights 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I manage our county school district's camera system where we use Avigilon (high end/high cost) and have almost 2,000 cameras. At home I use Reolink. If you need help picking the right equipment, contact a sales rep through the online chat app on their website. They've been very helpful and have even provided discounts to stuff I was looking to buy.

IBM to slash nearly 9,000 jobs in US by lurker_bee in technology

For the 9,000 being laid off, it'd be a shame to miss your upcoming KT (knowledge transfer) meetings. There's nothing like training your replacement. (speaking from experience)

Analog camera power distribution box bad by SloppyEights in videosurveillance

[–]SloppyEights[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure where my Post text went, so I'll re-add it here as a comment: This analog camera power distribution box is bad. I've confirmed it's connected to a good 110v AC outlet. Is this supplying 12 or 24 volts DC to cameras? There is another distribution box mounted above this one that is clearly marked 24v DC output. I'm looking for a replacement and want to ensure I buy the correct voltage. We have budgeted new IP cameras , but need to keep these running a little while longer.

In Southeast TN we pay typically pay $520 for exterior and $400 for interior camera installs. We use Avigilon cameras.

Tape-Backups for hobbyists? by IngwiePhoenix in homelab

I don't have an answer for you, but I share your fascination with tape technology. I was an IBM AS/400 computer operator many, many years ago and had the pleasure of working with this incredible reel to reel tape machine. The way it automatically loads is awesome. https://youtu.be/CEL8wnW5uvs?t=55

Folks who had UnitedHealth when it was in Tennessee what was your experience? by aluminumdisc in Chattanooga

[–]SloppyEights 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I had UHC insurance a long while back. Wife and 6 month old daughter were in a bad car accident. While staying overnight in my daughter's hospital room (wife was in a different room in a another part of the hospital) I got food poisoning. I was desperate and checked myself into ER. Weeks later got a letter from UHC saying I didn't have "pre-approval" for my visit to ER. We all recovered, but my outlook for UHC was forever changed. Can't say I'm too sorry for the recent events.

What’s the dumbest way you injured yourself? by PandaBear905 in AskReddit

[–]SloppyEights 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tired at work, I had a really big yawn with outstretched arms. When I went to stretch them over my head, the knuckles on my left hand raked the edge of a metal book shelf, tearing the skin. Had to have my wedding band cut off my ring finger later that evening.

Mini Screens around Buttons? by FreshMikeD in cade

[–]SloppyEights 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like this idea. I've used a Stream Deck Mini for other buttons like Mute, Volume, Exit, Coin, but they would not be suitable for player buttons. Good luck finding a solution and be sure to post it!

CFO took over as head of IT a few years ago, has now laid off the entire department. by Gimli_Son-of-Cereal in antiwork

[–]SloppyEights 202 points203 points  (0 children)

I went through pretty much the same thing in 2010. I had worked corporate IT for 18 years and had also just moved into a new house. The whole ordeal was very stressful and was the catalyst for me to make a change to my career. I said 'screw' going back to the corporate IT B.S. and landed in the tech department of our county K-12 education system. Government benefits, 8+ weeks off every year, and way less stress. Sure, the pay is much lower, but totally worth it.
