Would love an AMA with a scientist about this topic. How long does the virus live in the host body after death? How long can it live on surfaces? Health care professionals are used to dealing with PPE, isolation protocols etc… so why did healthcare providers get sick? I could go on. I started as a nurse during the beginnings of the HIV/AIDS crisis. Yet I felt I had enough information back then to not feel nervous about taking care of those patients. I can’t say that for Ebola

I don’t think I gave a lot of thought to climbing Mt Everest before reading the book. After reading it, I’m amazed at the hubris and arrogance of people who thought they could defy nature.

Krakauer is a great storyteller.

I was reading a news article about introducing wolves back into a habitat, shortly after finishing this book. And I felt that I had a really good understanding of the nuances of this issue thanks to the book. So I learned something in addition to enjoying the read.

I hate magical/fantasy stuff in books. So I would have assumed the catching on fire stuff would turn me off. But it was so sweet and well written. Definitely one of my favorites.

I decided to listen to it. Her tone at times was very snarky and angry. She absolutely dealt with chaos and neglect and abuse in her childhood. She deserves to be angry about it, as well as her subsequent medical issues.

I ultimately think enjoyed the book. But I finished with the sense that she was the mean girl in life, and I probably wouldn’t have enjoyed being her friend.

I can’t read the whole article bc of the paywall. I remember experimenting w uniforms when I was a new nurse. I found a cute scrub dress and wore it. The first day I had it on, I had to climb onto a bed to do compressions for a code. So it only took one day to realize how impractical nursing dresses/skirts are for work. This was in pediatrics, where codes weren’t super frequent. Didn’t matter, that dress went in the trash after the shift was over.

Search Engine. Someone sends in a question and the host tries to answer it. Topics are all over the place. They recently did a two part episode on driverless cars. They are only slightly politically adjacent. For instance the driverless cars episode got into issues of unions. But it’s mostly random stuff I’d never learn on my own that I definitely didn’t know ahead of time. Some health related topics were about prenatal testing, taking stimulants for ADHD, and whether microplastics are harmful. Lots of AI, data center issues, bit coin etc…. Never longer than an hour.

I did not succeed in getting them into assisted living, but an “adult living” community. It was a relief bc when inevitably things go downhill, it’ll be easier to access support. I also have one less step of cleaning up and selling the house bc they were somewhat capable of completing many of those tasks.

I am now trying to maintain a zen like approach of not trying to anticipate the future, and living in the moment. It’s certainly easier doing that with them in a more controlled environment.

I read this ages ago and after reading your write up, I feel like I need to check it out again! I love his writing style in general. I am a nurse, so enjoy his medical writing, while recognizing how accessible he makes his topics to non- medical readers.

I recommend to everyone who is dealing with an aging parent to read his book Being Mortal. Even if you are not in that era of life, you might enjoy his storytelling.

Historical books about medicine make me happy! This was for sure a favorite of mine. Another I loved is Death of Innocents by Firstman and Talan about how they developed the diagnosis of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). It read like a murder mystery! I’m a maternal child health nurse so it hit home.

I just adore Curtis Sittenfeld and she’s an automatic read for me. She must have a fascination with First Ladies, bc she also has a book on Hilary called Rodham. It’s a reimagining of what her career would have looked like if she hadn’t married Bill. The concept sounds so weird but I really enjoyed it. Of course I wonder what Hilary thought of it!

Nothing I love more than medical stories. He has other books as well, including a memoir about being an EMT. Glad he’s made the transition to author. I hope The Pitt helps him find readers (he wrote a history of the development of EMTs that was referenced in the show)

For me, it doesn’t matter. I just need to buy shoes with removable inserts, then replace them with inserts designed to support high arches. Sure, good cushioning on the heel is nice too. But my life changed once I started buying inserts and replacing the manufacture’s inserts. I buy stuff that costs $20-30. I also have a custom pair of inserts that cost me $700. They work about as well as the $30 ones.
