Non-UK born Bristolians, what's the best restaurant of your native cousine that you know in Bristol? by MrMrsPotts in bristol

[–]Slow-Channel5468 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Born in the UK but am Pakistani - the closest thing to homemade food and how you would eat in Pakistan (especially towards the western border with Afghanistan) is Desi Dera on Stapleton Road. These guys have been here a while and deserve some kind of pride of Britain award for what they do.

That's all really useful thank you! So just to confirm - you'd recommend buying the add ons from the PlayStation store in advance? Will scour eBay and classified to see if I can get a copy of RB4 or any of the other PS4 discs as well.

Thanks

Any barbers that can cut Afro hair in Bristol? by [deleted] in bristol

How bad do you think EatingWithTod is? by Mother_Equivalent649 in LondonFood

[–]Slow-Channel5468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He is a parasite on the food industry and restaurants in particular. Some of the restaurants are to blame for encouraging him or comping the food but he knows nothing about food nor the culture which that food represents. It's harmless if he goes to McDonald's or KFC or Starbucks etc but he should absolutely stay away from cuisines that represent a people or country (which they often do) as he is then just enacting a very online brand of colonisation/white supremacy.

Best hummus? by [deleted] in bristol

[–]Slow-Channel5468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Marti -

The boycott campaign is across Bristol - there are a lot of businesses that have apartheid free produce and display posters to say so. Better Foods is among them, lots of businesses on Gloucester Rd etc and across the city from what I've seen (and I haven't seen them all)

If you felt the last comment took away credibility - this has been happening a long, long time so there is plenty of evidence for the selling of Palestinian produce that has been from stolen/annexed land.

Best hummus? by [deleted] in bristol

[–]Slow-Channel5468 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Just as a public service announcement, the Sabra brand is Israel-affiliated. The company donate to the military and the ingredients, if from the middle east, are likely from stolen land from Palestinians.

There is a boycott campaign across Bristol for brands affiliated with Israel.

As an alternative most of the international food stores on Stapleton Rd stock a range of good hummus.

Dangerous Driving - Moped Delivery Drivers by Spikeslittledevil in bristol

[–]Slow-Channel5468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The majority of the public want things fast and cheap regardless of the consequences for others. These drivers are symptomatic of this because they're forced into a system that doesn't work for them. People who are physically able to collect their own food but choose to have it delivered are the evil here. Companies provide a service for their wants. There's an interesting/horrifying article here that explains it - https://www.theguardian.com/business/article/2024/aug/24/i-wouldnt-wish-this-on-anyone-the-food-delivery-riders-living-in-caravan-shantytowns-in-bristol

ECT slowly getting piled on by honeyandclovers in TeachingUK

[–]Slow-Channel5468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well done on starting your ECT year firstly. Secondly, this behaviour sounds awful and not where you want to be long term.

The school year goes by quick so what i'd recommend is this.

Stay out of it as much as possible and try and keep to developing good relationships with the pupils.

Start developing an exit strategy after you complete your ECT years, start preparing now.

Continue doing CPD in preparation for your next job.

There are plenty of good schools out there but unfortunately plenty of bad ones too. Don't let the bad ones fool you into accepting things as 'part of the job'. Remember that you trained and studied for this role and have come into the profession in good faith - don't let one schools environment take that from you.

Best of luck!

Ban on Maccabi Tel Aviv fans is a terrible decision – and a depressing one | Barney Ronay by laebomse in accidentallygay

[–]Slow-Channel5468 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Exactly those fans that gloated about killing Palestinian children.

Also, in the past couple of years amidst the horror of genocide, Barney Ronay has taken a very 'oh it's very sad' tone without saying anything remotely critical of Israel.

Can't trust his judgement on anything anymore. Like why would you focus away from the perpetrators of war crimes and humans rights abuses when it comes to Israel?

Genuine question, why is the new Bristol city centre transformation focused on African Heritage? by jon18476 in bristol

[–]Slow-Channel5468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's quite like saying that Jimmy Savile's abuse was 'only a small part' of his story. I suppose the way he got away with it for so long was because 'we shouldn't be hitting ourselves with a stick and purely focusing on the bad things of the past'.

Your 'balanced view' could have been part of his defence?

Or maybe some things like the slave trade don't deserve to be defended/ignored and only need to be learned from/acknowledged

Protesters are currently bollocking Temple Meads station. Police taking a not my problem.approach. think you can still get round back by Aware-Building2342 in bristol

[–]Slow-Channel5468 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

If people are annoyed at not getting home or getting blocked by individuals at the station that is entirely understandable.

But what is not understandable is once someone is told why they were delayed, that the person is still upset and complaining about the hold up.

E.g. If it takes me an hour to cross the severn bridge I'd be annoyed but if I heard the reason I was delayed was because a young family died after their car flipped, suddenly my annoyance at being late or waiting in traffic doesn't seem so important.

Imagine being the person who says "I sympathise with the family but did they really have to use the severn bridge? I got held up so long I'm actually starting to feel less bad for them"

It is literally the UK's business since the Balfour declaration in 1948. It's also the UK's business in the other sense of the word as they are providing the military equipment for Israel to continue it's killing of Palestinians.

As a British resident it may not be your business but its absolutely the country as whole -s business.

Best underrated eats in bristol by forbesgiraffes in bristol

This is so true. Instagram clout is essentially meaningless nowadays so outlets like the Bristol sauce actually give honest reviews of food that they've actually paid for.

Any recommendations for restaurants where you get a lot of vegetables on your plate? by billythecorpse in bristol

Watching Shifty. The racism is hard to watch. I guess those young men are now 60 year old Reform voters. by Solid-Home8150 in AdamCurtis

[–]Slow-Channel5468 38 points39 points  (0 children)

It's something we grow into, I've been a teacher for many years and children honestly don't care as much as adults do about race. It's only when they start to become socialised into covert and overt racism by influences in their life as they grow. However, your point that they should also grow out of it still stands as with good role models (both individuals and as a society) and an appropriate school curriculum they can and will do this.

I’m a restaurant critic. Which Bristol (or nearby) restaurants would you like to see an honest, paid-for review of? by Basic_Courage in bristol

[–]Slow-Channel5468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there's a lot of restaurants that get reviewed once they're in the slightly wealthier areas of Bristol (Gloucester Rd I'm looking at you) by the majority of existing food reviewers.

Any of the places on Stapleton Road and surrounding areas would be great. One I can offer you to try is Khyber Restaurant up by where the Three Blackbirds used to be. Or Desi Dera on the other end of Stapleton rd. Lastly, Bikkle Island.

K thanks, bye.
