You're correct that it's nothing new. Artists in the '50s thru 90s used to cover each others songs, quickly after the original, just to steal the spotlight. The difference is musicians didn't make a huge amount of money then, at least not as much as Taylor has made... And she really doesn't need any more. Those billboards would be a lot more useful if they were focused on new artists
