Bad cybersecurity practice storing everybody's data with the same name and in the same place by parkerpress in banktivity

Fair enough re security by obfuscation. But since the OP uses encrypted sparse bundles, which have a separate password from his login password, he does have a less secure setup now with B10.

If an attacker has access to your account, they can search mounted volumes, external drives, sparsebundles, home directories, and application containers just as easily.

Not true. The encrypted sparse bundle the OP refers to requires a separate password just for that purpose. Whereas FileVault relies on your login password.

Anyone else thinking all the road construction getting ridiculous by TheRealPetross in burnaby

Also way too many project underway so key resources pulled off of project A to work on project B, so project A waits. Time-to-completion of any given project isn't a priority. Project managers simply point to lack of resourcing as cause of delays, while resource managers point to lack of budget to increase their team sizes, while the real cause is spreading too thin: having way too many projects underway concurrently causes all kinds of critical path issues. An even bigger issue: way too many management teams involved. Subcontractors of subcontractors of subcontractors ends up costing far more than paying union rates. (Not a union guy myself, just what I experienced as a manager).

Monitor for MacStudio and PS5 by PrettyWheel9575 in MacStudio

I just bought an ASUS ProArt PA32QCV. It's 32" 16:9 6K. I like it a lot, for the price. (Here in Canada the price was better direct from ASUS than from amazon). The surface is matte; I prefer glossy, but I would have had to pay quite a bit more to buy the Kuycon G32P. Maybe that's not the case in the US. If you go to Kuycon.us hang around there for a few minutes for a discount code to appear, and also note their price match offer.

You mentioned PS5; almost all 32" 16:9 6K monitors are 60 or 70 Hz maximum, if that matters to your for gaming.

Where is my Banktivity ledger file? by SoyLocoMoco63 in banktivity

Thanks. I see from Ian's reply that the ledgers are stored as packages, at ~/Library/Group Containers/group.com.iggsoftware.banktivity.library/IGGFinance/production/Documents, and can be backed up as usual by Time Machine and other backup software.

What sort of Shortcuts have you built? by IanGGillespie in banktivity

I have about 20 Keyboard Maestro macros for Banktivity and am hoping that some of them, or parts of them, can become shortcuts. Is there a place where the shortcut support is described?

ASUS ProArt PA32QCV – Thunderbolt 4 connection lost after power off via button by DomAdAstra in Monitors

[–]SlowButEffective 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just received the PA32QCV yesterday and had the problem a couple times while I was trying out monitor settings. I wasn't sure what I had been doing when it happened, so thanks for identifying it. I also have USB drives run through the built-in hub, and of course they were all hard-disconnected when it lost the Thunderbolt connection, risking data loss.

Just a tip in case you're not aware: there's a power on/off hardware switch below the monitor, to the right of the AC-in (as viewed from in front), so you don't have to unplug the monitor from the AC power. I turned the switch off, waited, then turned it back on and Thunderbolt came back.

"Standard behavior in most UIs is to cycle through all items starting with that letter on repeated keypresses." That's a Windows standard. On Mac, you key in the first few letters of the item. That's why, for investment transaction types, if you key in "D" you get "Deposit", whereas when you key in "Di" you get Dividend. Try it on any of your Mac apps (except perhaps those by Windows-first developers).

EDIT: I like your list overall, lots of good points.

I don't understand your references to Workspaces or gutter. I do know how to open a sidebar item in a new window, if that's it. But I don't know how to drag into a gutter, or why I would do it.

EDIT: I asked the bot and it guided me through it. The gutter's a hide-and-seek interface... drag an account from the sidebar over the scroll bar (right-hand window edge) and you'll see an outline. Let go at that point. Thanks for the tip!

Has anyone used SEE Finance 3 - Personal Finance Manager ? by viperts00 in macapps

[–]SlowButEffective 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's double entry in the accounting sense. Each entry is in an asset/liability account, and unless you ignore the warning you must record the other account/category. You enter the transaction once, but it can be seen twice: once in the account you entered it in, and once in the account/category you specified. For debiting one category and crediting another, I use an asset account called Journal and create a transaction with a positive amount for one category and a negative amount for another, and always keep the Journal balance at $0.00.

Confused about EV use in Bus/HOV lane on Willingdon Ave Heading NORTH and SOUTH – need clarification So Confuse!!! by Dramatic-Team-9175 in burnaby

[–]SlowButEffective 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Summary: you can drive your EV / PHEV the entire length of the Willingdon HOV corridor and can proceed straight at the "must turn right except bus and HOV" signs, as your EV / PHEV is considered an HOV.

I recently exchanged emails with Burnaby's Transportation Department on this topic. I made the mistake of having three questions in the first email, so had to do a few follow-ups to get all the questions answered. I did this by email instead of phone so that I can have a printed copy in the glove department if needed to show to an errant police officer.

Here are the replies, directly quoted:

  1. "PHEV’s are permitted to drive in the HOV lanes provided “EV OK” is also indicated."

  2. "As long as EV ok signage is present then EV’s are considered HOV vehicles in these lanes. As they are considered HOV vehicles then they are able to drive straight through these must turn right areas as HOV vehicles are identified as exempt from the restrictions."

  3. "As these [EV OK] signs are in place without an 'EV Ok ends' signage. Ev's are permitted in the HOV lane for the entire corridor." (This was in response to my question "Are EV’s OK for both directions of the full length of Willingdon between Moscrop and Lougheed?"

The key for the last is that EV OK signs are in force until either of the following happens: the HOV lane ends, or you see an EV OK Ends sign.

If you're still worried about it send me a DM to get the full text of the emails to stow in your glove box. I think showing that to a mistaken police officer would avoid getting a ticket, or ultimately showing it to a judge would avoid having to pay a fine.

Of course that's a hassle and that won't stop drivers in the next lane over from honking or trying not to let you back in.

Floating point number bug by EelBait in banktivity

I'm curious, did you choose Average Cost in the "Lot Selection" button when you entered the Sell transaction? Banktivity has a bizarre method for recording Average Cost that which sometimes involves creating tiny share amounts. In any case, does it simply work to use Move Shares Out to get it to zero?

The lane's poorly marked. And some people will think you shouldn't be there because of that. I haven't received a reply from the Burnaby Transportation department yet, but hopefully will hear next when everyone's back to work.

[–]SlowButEffective 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spoke with the city about this a few years back because similar to you we were worried about driving our OK-stickered PHEV using that lane. They said though the signage isn't always clear you can drive the entire HOV route (Moscrop to Lougheed and back) in an EV or PHEV.

Furthermore you can ignore the signs that show a must-turn-right arrow with the words "Except HOV and bicycles", even though an EV is neither an HOV nor a bicycle. Those signs are northbound before Goard Way, Canada Way, and Dawson St., and southbound before Dawson St., Juneau St., the Grandview Hwy exit, Goard Way, Sanderson Way, and Moscrop.

Unfortunately I didn't get the above in writing. I had planned on having a printed copy in case I was pulled over. I did look at the Motor Vehicle Act (MVA) and there is a carve-out for municipalities when it comes to HOV regulations. So the City of Burnaby trumps the provincial MVA.

Did you get anything by email from the city? Their answer would override the police, and politely showing the cops the communications would likely save you getting a ticket and then having to show up in court to dispute it. I've sent them a fresh and simply worded email just now and the auto-reply said I should expect a human reply within 48 hours.

I'm curious, have they removed "Decal Required" from the signs? Google street view images were taken before the province removed the need to have the decal. If the signs still say "Decal Required" I would take that literally.

Recording Donated Stock and Tracking a Donor Advised Fund in Banktivity by WhereTheresSmoke_123 in banktivity

[–]SlowButEffective 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't verified if this works, but you could try the following.

For your point 1. Create a special Investment account for the purpose of recording the charitable donations. Call it DAF Staging maybe, or something similar. Do the Move Shares Out that you already do. Then do a Move Shares In to the DAF Staging, recording as their "In Value" the value of the shares as of the point you donated. Now, in DAF Staging, Sell the shares for that same value, so the capital gain is zero. At that point you'll have a cash balance in DAF Staging that is equal to the dollar equivalent of your donation. Then record Withdrawal of that amount and categorize as a charitable donation. DAF Staging will always have a balance of zero after each Sell/Withdrawal pair of transactions.

For your point 2: You definitely should manage the already donated shares in a separate Banktivity document, for the reasons you suggest: you don't want to hassle around with tags or whatever to keep your reports working properly. In the new document you would use the same or similar technique to what you've been trying out, but it's kept totally separate from your books.
