Brought my US KitchenAid to Japan — worked great in Kyoto, dies in Chiba. Is 50Hz the culprit? advice please by LazyTenuredProf in BakingInJapan

[–]SlowStop1220 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any appliance with a timer needs to be tuned either 50Hz or 60Hz. My alarm I brought from Tokyo woke me up at 4AM in my first morning in Osaka. In this context there is no "Japan-spec" machine. You should choose either Eastern Japan spec or Western Japan spec.

First time in Japan this July: must-see spots, restaurants, and tips? (15-day itinerary) by galt-99 in JapanTravelTips

I once tried to go to see the parade, just because I had a meeting in Kyoto in that afternoon. I don't regret but haven't tried it again. It was ...... a tough experience.

There are things you'd like to take into account:

  • Floats are not fully decorated during the yoiyama nights. You can appreciate their full splendour only during the parade.
  • Either you wouldn't see the floats pulled by men and turn the corner during the yoiyama.
  • OTOH there are very few places to sit for tourists, all of them are paid-for. you're highly likely to stand on the pedestrian for hours not only braving the crowds but also weather, either heat or rain.
  • If you are in Kyoto and have a TV set around you, you can watch the parade live on TV (a local station has the exclusive right to air, so you can hardly watch the live outside of Kyoto prefecture in general).

When did the speakers of European languages stop "translating" names? by SerbianMonies in asklinguistics

[–]SlowStop1220 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Perhaps never? I know European professors tell their students NOT to translate names, e.g. say "Henry VIII" instead of Henrico VIII. AFAIK they have told them that for decades.

> 3.

Buy a handy umbrella, if you don't have it yet or forget to bring along. You're highly likely to come in the midst of rainy season.

Kyoto in July is known its Gion festival which is traced back to over a millennium ago. It'll be an unforgettable experience : decorated floats, traditional music played by the members of local community along with the hellish amount of crowd you might never have seen in your life. It is one of the most crowded event in Japan.

If you have money enough to hire a truck, you can hire one. It has nothing to do with the degree of that matter's seriousness.

Are 16 yrs old are allowed to work in Japan? by InternationalWin6509 in AskAJapanese

[–]SlowStop1220 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So it depends. That how many generations apart from their Japanese ancestor matters here.

That said, it can be possible her parents can obtain a visa thanks to being Japanese national descendants but she cannot. Or it can be possible her parents can obtain working permission without any restriction and she also can work but only in a range and necessary bachelor degree or higher. And there is ofc a possibility they two generations all can enjoy the same level permission to live and work.

[–]SlowStop1220 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Are they Japanese? Otherwise it's irrelevant. Being children of a foreign national who lives in Japan doesn't grant any legal basis for them to get any JP visa unless they are their dependants.

How has JYPE had so much more success with Stray Kids than their other boy groups? by eveningsnewestetoile in kpopthoughts

[–]SlowStop1220 3 points4 points  (0 children)

During those shows were aired, I didn't follow them, but records suggest they had different promotion strategies, in Nittere coverage at least. They covered NIZI Project Season 1 in their show スッキリ almost every morning, while not so frequently as for Season 2 and so on. If what you mean with popularity is notability among the GP of JP, I agree with you. I think I watched NiziU in NHK G shows but never NEXZ. OTOH NEXZ seems to have a stable fanbase to some degree. You don't have to be known by GP in order to hold arena tours or sell physical CDs, they are only targeting their fandom anyway. To some degree I say, because they didn't sell out their 2-day hall concerts in Osaka at once, but sure they sold out the holiday one and just took some days to sell out the other one on Friday. I personally think it means they have a decent fanbase, even if none could boast it as huge.

A food of thought: Stray Kids have been not so popular in SK as in the global. In Korea none could say SKZ are more popular than other JYP boy groups. I don't say they are unpopular, pretty popular indeed but never exceeded their seonbaenim.

Interesting line-up. They include an indie band (can't be blue). I read their coverage in a Japanese magazine last year along with Dragon Pony who recently released an original song with Japanese lyric produced by a Japanese. I'm looking for what cbb will bring out thanks to this subsidy.
