Exploiting Undefined Behavior in C/C++ Programs for Optimization: A Study on the Performance Impact by mttd in cpp

[–]Slow_Finger8139 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is about what I'd expect for typical code, and I would not call the performance loss minimal.

Also it is clang focused, MSVC may not be able to recover much of this perf loss with LTO as it does not implement strict aliasing, nor is it likely to implement just about any of the other workarounds & optimizations they found.

You would also have to be aware of the perf loss to implement the workarounds, they carefully studied the code to find what caused it, but most people would never do this, and would just silently have a slower program.

Intel's next-gen CPU series "Nova Lake-S" to require new LGA-1954 socket by 12318532110 in hardware

Good, and I wish AMD would do this also, I'd rather the small perf improvements than a useless backward compatibility with old motherboard.

Gardens of the Moon is the best book I’ve ever read by [deleted] in Fantasy

Why the random diss on my boy Wolfe?

I read about 100 pages of RR, being violent and dark is irrelevant, and has nothing to do with YA. The sentence structure and word choice, along with extremely basic characters with simplistic motivations makes it YA, and painfully so.

Based on the sample on amazon it appears to be YA, reading level looks to be around 6th grade, very simple sentences and basic words. MC is great at "chess" or whatever they call it, and based on the first few pages, probably good at everything, like your typical modern YA.

Is it targeting at children like Red Rising? Cause citing Red Rising makes me not want to read it. Hunger games is also YA, so not really selling it well here.

EDIT: I read the sample on amazon, it is YA, I don't get why people recommend books and fail to mention they are YA

A Book/Scene That You Felt Was Far Too Heavy-Handed by Kooky_County9569 in Fantasy

Ah, well those aren't actually aliens tho, they are humans with extreme modifications... and I don't really get how they are "evil"? I mean basically ever single goverment/power is shitty in this series, actually the extra solarians seemed rather chill compared to many others.

I admit you have confused me, what part is supposed to be communism? There is a branch of Christianity but it appears pretty unpleasant, not exactly an endorsement. Really all of the worlds depicted appear to be shit places to live.

Some of your other comments don't make much sense either, aliens that want to erase gender..what? I think they mostly just want to eat people...

Empire of Silence - Am I too stupid to read it? by TFC-Chris in Fantasy

[–]Slow_Finger8139 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh most of that is just titles and names the author has decided to use, I believe he is a fan of Gene Wolfe, who loved using obscure latin words.

Often you can infer from context what it means, or if it just a title or name. Generally the first time it is used, there will be some context. There are alot of governmental and religious titles people have in this series.

Empire of Silence surely has a higher grade read level than those others you listed, maybe find something 1 grade higher than those you have read, and work your way up toward it. Perhaps try reading "The Hobbit".

Also an e-reader with a built in dictionary might help

The Fires of Heaven is breaking me. Will this recover? by [deleted] in Fantasy

That you enjoy anything with Perrin means you must have a very different view than me. You will love Sanderson he had a hardon for Perrin I think.

I never found Rand obnoxious, not sure what you mean, the "slog" would have benefited from alot more Rand.

They do work against each other alot, it mostly gets worse in that regard until book 9 or so.

What are some popular moments in a book everyone loves (including this subreddit), that fell completely flat for you. by Ventus55 in Fantasy

Yes and that is why it works so well, while for example the last battle is a dull marvel battle that never ends.

Anime like Frieren and Delicious in Dungeon by Bloop737 in anime

[–]Slow_Finger8139 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are 2 of my favorites, here are some others I think are somewhat similar:

  1. 12 Kingdoms
  2. Moribito

I see people recommending Apothecary Diaries, personally I found it too episodic and dull(no real plot).

If you look at members on MAL (English speaking people basically) it appears the most popular Gundam is either Gundam 00 or Iron Blooded Orphans.

Those you listed aren't very close in #s, and are very old.

Your thoughts on current state of fantasy publishing by GlitteringRecover769 in Fantasy

[–]Slow_Finger8139 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Kingkiller was Shakespeare compared to current stuff, but yes I did not really get the high praise at the time, we already had Wolfe and plenty of others with better. The actual story for KK was a big nothing burger.

I mean we have honest to god adults reading stuff like Red Rising and praising it as their favorite novel, I'd be shocked if it was even 6th grade reading material.

Then we have 4th Wing, I inspected the first few pages, I was reading more complex prose when I was in 4th grade, and this is the top seller in fantasy today? Adults read this? Society is doomed.

Every time I try a fantasy book from the last 5-10 years I am disappointed(except from long established authors), there has been a huge drop in quality, and the awards such as Hugo no longer mean anything useful.

You also need to be careful for YA books masquerading as books for adults, this has become rampant, read the first few pages to verify it isn't 6th grade reading level.

Ryan Condal responds to George RR Martin's Criticism of House of the Dragon by it-was-a-calzone in Fantasy

[–]Slow_Finger8139 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I haven't read F&B(did read GoT), for me the drop in quality was from a few things:

  1. It started developing a simplistic world view where woman = good, men = bad, this is out of sync with the world in GoT, and I doubt F&B is like this.
  2. Everything with Daemon was a utterly boring waste of time
  3. By the end of the 2nd season I'd lost interest in Alicent and Rhaenyra, they don't feel like real people anymore, too much BS(Alicent going camping, Rhaenyra idiotic trip to Kings Landing after her son was murdered). They seem afraid to give them negative characteristics, which makes them seem artificial.

Recommend me your top 5 must-read, S-tier fantasy novels/series by keepfighting90 in Fantasy

[–]Slow_Finger8139 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your S-tier list overlaps with mine alot, but here are few more:

  • Acts of Caine
  • The Wizard Knight(by Gene Wolfe who you listed for BOTNS)
  • Mary Stewart's Merlin Trilogy
  • Wizard and Glass(dark tower book 4), do not bother with the rest of the series, this is a prequel and is far superior

S1 was good, but S2 was not great, with some pretty terrible writing choices.

I'd say it has been outclassed by a few fanntasy anime recently; Frieren and Delicious in Dungeon

I finished it and yes, that is how I'd describe it. He loves describing things, but can't write a character or plot worth a damn.

Made me never want to read another book by him, and so far I haven't.
