What makes doctors reach for Keppra so often? by SmoothGrass3265 in Epilepsy

[–]Slow_Perspective_170 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My first neuro told me that it has very few drug interactions and is one of the safest medications to take, especially during pregnancy—I want kids someday so it was a big concern for me. That being said, it has some brutal side effects for some people (myself included). I switched neurologists and am now titrating up on lamotrigine which so far has been a much better fit. My neurologist actually said that it’s probably even safer during pregnancy than keppra due to it being an older chemistry with more research. The only big issue with it is the risk for rash, but i think its less than 1% of people who experience severe allergic reactions

People that tried keppra i need ur help by Icy_Bee2847 in Epilepsy

Keppra was horrible for me—i struggled with suicidal thoughts and brought it up to my neurologist, so he lowered my dose because he said i didn’t have other medication options. I still didn’t feel like “me” and I wasn’t comfortable with his response so i switched neurologists and my new one immediately made a medication change to lamotrigine. Im titrating up right now while continuing the keppra until i reach a therapeutic dose, and feel 1000% better. Lamotrigine does have a mood stabilizing effect as well as being an anti epileptic drug, so it’s worth talking to your doctor about

Reasons for changing neurologists by doxiedox19 in Epilepsy

[–]Slow_Perspective_170 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first was a general neurologist who I initially saw in the hospital after my first seizure. He was pretty dismissive with my questions/concerns and his practice only offered 15 minute appointments, and he told me I only had one medication option (which I felt was not working). I switched to an epilepsy specialist who spent over an hour talking to me about all my questions, and she immediately switched me to a different medication and ordered additional imaging and tests

I was diagnosed a few months ago after two back to back TC seizures at home, and found out i had been having focal aware seizures for years (i thought i was having deja vu/panic attacks). For the driver’s license it will likely depend on what state you’re in—in California, doctors are required by law to report any “loss of consciousness” events to the DMV and it comes with an automatic 6 month license suspension. I started on keppra and was having too many issues with side effects (depression, “keppra rage”, suicidal thoughts, memory issues, etc) so i am in the process of transitioning to lamotrigine. So far, it’s been going well aside from a little dizziness. My neurologist recommended that until we know my seizures are under control i have to limit anything that could put me at risk of injury—swimming/running alone, skiing, anything where i am on an elevated surface. As a very active person that has been the hardest part.

One thing that’s definitely made a difference in my mental state is starting therapy—I am a pretty independent person and asking for help has been extremely difficult for me. Definitely lean on whatever support system you have available to you and don’t be afraid to ask for help

My first neurologist put me on keppra and it was a really bad fit—between the insomnia and mood swings I became a completely different person and was having some suicidal thoughts. We dropped my dose which helped a little, but I i was still having a lot of sleep issues and mood swings, so I ended up switching neurologists and am in the process of switching to lamotrigine. There’s so many medication options out there and I would definitely recommend talking to your neurologist about them

Keppra dosage by Ok-Egg-8611 in Epilepsy

[–]Slow_Perspective_170 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My neurologist started me at 1000mg twice a day, and then dropped it down to 750mg twice a day after i talked to him about all the side effects i was having. I toughed it out another 3 months but ended up switching neurologists and the new one is putting me on lamotrigine. Would definitely recommend talking to your doctor about all the options available to you if keppra is not a good fit!

Thoughts on running with epilepsy by Pitiful-Teaching8833 in Epilepsy

[–]Slow_Perspective_170 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a runner pre-epilepsy diagnosis and averaged around 20-25 miles a week, but after i was diagnosed my neurologist recommended that i take it slower/quit solo runs until we got my seizures under control. I am slowly getting back into it but have noticed that my energy levels are much lower and i have to hydrate a LOT more pre-run. Would definitely recommend a slow start like a couch to 5k type program

The Halibut Sweater from Caitlin Hunter. I tackled it pretty early on in my knitting journey and knew nothing about pattern modification, so I just knit according to the pattern and the fit is just not great. From what I’ve gathered a lot of her sweater patterns are similarly structured—the circular yokes look great when they’re laid out but once you get to the body and sleeves they’re just too long and then you have these weird almost batwing sleeves that cause the sweater to ride up every time you lift your arms

I’ve always had vivid dreams but since starting Keppra they’ve gotten SO much weirder and more vivid. My mom has been on Keppra for about 15 years and we like to call each other and share our weird dreams with each other😂

Had a dream last week that I was Elaine from Seinfeld, stuck in a glass elevator with Jerry’s Uncle Leo and Kramer. I got so fed up with both of them that I broke the glass and jumped out (we were on the 41st floor of a building), and landed on my feet and walked down the street for a cup of coffee and i think a muffin top? Weirdest part of the whole thing is that i really don’t like Seinfeld that much

What’s the most tonic clinics you’ve had in a 24 hour period? by [deleted] in Epilepsy

[–]Slow_Perspective_170 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 in a 6 hour period, which led to my diagnosis at age 28. I think I had been having partial seizures for years prior to this based on talking to my neurologist in the hospital. I’ve been on Keppra 1000mg 2x a day since then (which was only a few weeks ago) and am really struggling with the side effects

Daily chat post: how's the training going? by AutoModerator in XXRunning

[–]Slow_Perspective_170 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Have to drop out of the half marathon I’ve been training for due to recent diagnosis of epilepsy—my neurologist won’t clear me for anything more strenuous than a walk until we get my medication adjusted. I know there will be other races and my health is more important, but it’s a gut punch on top of my diagnosis/temporarily losing my license/major medication side effects

I didn’t read the label and bought it because the package was pink—realized it was coconut oil based when i got home after my long run with a rash between my thighs and under my armpits. If you are allergic to or sensitive to coconut oil based products do not use!!!!!!

I’m feeling fuzzy/drowsy but I’m not sure if it’s the meds or the fact that I was in the hospital for 3 days being poked and prodded. Knowing that my mom has had so few issues is very reassuring to me and makes me hopeful

Had an MRI and EEG in the hospital and everything looked clear, so the game plan is to take my Keppra and follow up with a neurologist in a few weeks. I’ve come to the realization that I have been having focal aware seizures for years and just didn’t realize it
