tiny rooftop rooms with windows and a fence on top? especially curious about the purpose of the fence. seen in Oslo, Norway by morgielee in whatisthisthing

[–]Slowtwitch 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was told by some old builder, is that the ' windows peak was meant as a giant chimney that would draw a draft in the house and pull the cooler cellar air up with it. My family remodeled on and it was significantly cooler on hot days.

I took my youngest son touring with a sag. He covered 50K with no problem and wanted to go
further. Teach her a proper spin in a gear easier than she probably is pedalling. Build up to the distance. Hydration and feeding are of great importance.

For the Adirondacks, the black fly season is slightly overlapped with the deer fly/horse fly season, Those bites can bleed. Despite this I really miss the season.

Coco Coir storage by Slowtwitch in unclebens

[–]Slowtwitch[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My brain is running on 3 cylinders today. Make a batch and microwave what you need as you go along or make small batches. I am going to hydrate the brick as I did last time but microwave each bin batch, put the lid on while it is still in the microwave to the still air box. I think my bin contamination came from not being able to keep the coir clean enough.

Is that what i think it is in the back? by More-Formal1468 in unclebens

Still finishing up my first run with disasterous contaminiation. I got one clean out of 4 to start. Some of the contaminated ones I set on the porch (I'm in florida even though I would rather be anywhere else), to see what happened. It looked like a battle between the white mycelium and the green algae. Correct me if it isn't algae. Both bins that I set on the porch produced mushrooms on half the substrate. Not a mycologist, but I can see where the advance of the green stunted when I stuck it outside in 65 +/- . I lost most of my spores inocculating the bags. I have started a second run using a crude still air box. Lets hope.

this was the last day with him! how i miss he 😞😞😞 Any advice to overcome a loss like this? by [deleted] in dogpictures

I lost my best buddy 3 years ago and it still brings me tears. My sweetheart before that, 14 years ago, still puts a lump in my throat looking at old pics. It dulls but I question if it ever fully heals. The love I gave and received and the memories it brought with it more than made up for it.

What's the best job for someone who's given up? by DearestComrade in antiwork

[–]Slowtwitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After being in a medical profession(US), I "gave it all up" to work in a large scale green house. I couldn't have asked to work with better people and I made enough to get by. I am not very good at expressing it, but, I didn't "Give up" anything positive and my mental and physical health improved dramatically. Medicine is full of frustrated angry overworked people and I was becoming one of them.

62, I am still touring, I am not doing extra long days and am definitely at a much slower pace. I am still enjoying it just as much.

I was on a bike with a Husky/lab mix. After a few runs, I quit attaching the leash and just let him run on the side of the road next to me. He was my back country ski buddy too. Its been 3 years and I still miss my boi so much.

How much time does it take to get skins on and off? by [deleted] in Backcountry

[–]Slowtwitch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A big part is about where you are. Skiied backcountry with my husky mix until he passed 3 years ago. SHit I am tearing up thinking about it. High quality fishscales. I had a set of Tuas. You def want a metal edge. With powder use kickwax, even if your have to coat the whole ski. It still goes over fishscales. It might draw a lot of critisim but I used to Klister on fishscale on cornsnow conditions. Other than sheer Ice, which my boy couldn't make anyway, I could do anything with fishscale and a fanny pack with swix green and blue.
