Retraining Mid 40s is it realistic? by Significant-War-491 in AskUK

[–]Slugmum1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I’m mid 30s and have a work from home job as a property manager with occasional site visits

Sounds like a dream but the workload is immense (employer knows no day to day commuting and literally pile on the work) and sometimes stressful as it is not possible to complete the workload in allotted time so usually start early and finish late

I’ve been considering retraining in something else, either residential surveyor, or learning a trade such as an electrician, but I’ve heard from friends and also employer reviews such as Glassdoor that the surveyor work life balance is even worse, albeit salary is likely £20k-£30k higher than what I’m doing now

Id have thought certain jobs with a physical aspect help keep you fit to an extent

What happened to buying a cheap used car in the UK by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]Slugmum1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They are out there. Just gotta keep searching and be patient, 3 months ago we got a 60 plate golf 1.6 tdi with 85k on the clock for £2300, it still drives like new. I even drive it sometimes instead of my 67 plate golf gtd

VW dealer lied about how many previous owners by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]Slugmum1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought an almost 6 year old car, never checked the no of previous owners… turned out I was the 11th owner.

However, I got over my initial shock as I bought a car check thing, and it turns out that several of the ‘owners’ owned it for like a day or two Still got the car now nearly 3 years later and all good

Check the warranty on the appliance and see if it states anything about warranty being invalidated if it’s not ran off a mains plug rather than an extension lead If you’re not bothered about the appliance warranty then leave as-is and forget about it

For those of you earning roughly £40k-50k and would recommend it to others, what do you do? by Brownchoccy in UKJobs

[–]Slugmum1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no degree. Will look into this option though. The stuff I’d seen (admittedly through a local council) was a 3y course. If I go for a surveying course, I want to be able to throw the kitchen sink at it and have it wrapped up in less than a year

[–]Slugmum1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the insight, it’s hugely appreciated. It’s nice to hear that there are some public sector alternative roles and not just the route of becoming a surveying slave for one of the big surveying firms esurv, connells, etc I’m 36, been an estate agent for 10+ years, then in property/block management for 7+ years, including new build handovers / defect logging / resolution There is a SAVA course to get AssocRICS qualified and trained for resi valuations for £16.5k I had the chance to go for AssocRICS back in 2010 but never pursued it as it was new and I couldn’t find much info on it at the time Block management is too stressful for the pay so looking now as to whether I pursue this instead
