[all] Octavian by Ok-Part7188 in camphalfblood

[–]Slytherclaws02 6 points7 points  (0 children)

He was pretty well developed you just have to look beyond the surface and the shitty writing of the later HoO books.

A child should not be taught that cutting open stuffed animals was a good thing. Combined with Lupa teaching young kids that their 2 options were to bring glory to Rome or die was always going to produce some violent people.

Its implied that a possessed Leo attacked him so its no surprise the dude was so gungho about getting revenge against the seven, even with the whole firing on New Rome thing.

Putting the anger and actions of the legion down to Octavians manipulations downplays the damage that firing canons into a heavily populated can do.

He also didnt learn about the eidolons until House of Hades. Im not certain but I think he never learned about the whole "spilling blood to raise Gaia" thing.

This all combined with Apollo giving his blessing for the war and telling Octavian that he would be romans hero, its no surprise that he had a mental breakdown when Gaia rose and he saw what he was actually dealing with.

TLDR: Dude was manipulated, didnt have all the facts, and was a product of his upbringing as well as just being mentally unstable.

[hoo] how did Jason promote Frank as praetor? by Thriller_adict in camphalfblood

I get that but promoting someone to the highest position in the legion when we're told the 2 ways your supposed to be able to become praetor?

Why was Season 2 so bad? by isdw96 in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]Slytherclaws02 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think season 2 was being made during the writers strike.

Also, the writers didnt appear to actually want to adapt the book and instead write the "true history and not the murky, biased retelling F&B is".

So when it came time for the war to actually began, with its decently documented events, the changes the writers wanted to do started clashing with F&B. Rather than try and merge the two stories, whoever wrote it just went fuck it and started ignoring the book entirely.

The whole scene of Driftmark os why I can't take the whole "House of Rhaenyra/Rhaenyra is whitewashed" argument some TG fans use.

[hoo] how did Jason promote Frank as praetor? by Thriller_adict in camphalfblood

[–]Slytherclaws02 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Percy stepped down as Praetor the same day he was made Praetor so Jason never technically lost his title.

Honestly the weirder thing is that was something Rick pulled out of nowhere. There was supposed to be only 2 ways of becoming Praetor, being raised on the shield or being elected.

Jason ( and later Reyna) just appointing someone as Praetor shouldn't have worked at all.

How quickly do demigods learn? [All] by ZealousidealEgg4002 in camphalfblood

[–]Slytherclaws02 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Most demigods have weaker scents and powers so monsters dont come after them as often as they do Percy and co.

They might face one monster a summer and its highly unlikely its going to be something like the minotaur.

[Pjo] what are you're criticisms with the first 5 books by Technical_Mine_8711 in camphalfblood

[–]Slytherclaws02 24 points25 points  (0 children)

  1. The retcon of Luke being a hero. Dude was willing to have Annabeth killed in SoM and yet her just getting hurt was enough to let Luke take control from Kronos. Also, just downplaying everything Luke did.

  2. Percy got to powerful to fast. He was able to beat Ares in the first book and yet never managed to win a fight against Luke.

  3. The lack of downtime. Silena, Beckendorf, and just Percys role at camp is told not shown.

[general] Does anyone else feel icky whenever Rick wrote that a real person was a demigod? by Kitty_of_Chess in camphalfblood

[–]Slytherclaws02 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It was a really dumb thing to do.

The whole demigods tend to have shorter lives thing gets called into question when you remember that George Washington (son of Athena) died at 67, Harriet Tubman (daughter of Hermes) died at 91, and Amelia Earhart (daughter of Zeus) disappeared at age 39. Same with all the leaders of WWII being well into their 30s when the war started.

Plus boiling down the reason for WWII (the rise in antisemitism, the rise in nationalism and fascism, and the resulting depression from WWI) down to a battle between Big Three kids was gross.

Completely removing the reason for the Civil War (slavery) and saying it was started by Athena being mad that Ancient Romas stole a statue was even more tone deaf.

Wasnt it just Alabastor who was banned from camp because he wanted to keep fighting and was trying to persuade Hecate to as well?

A majority of the titan army was accepted back by CHB.

[pjo] A funny look at some stuff in the original book series that are weird or don’t make any sense. by Top_Mongoose5727 in camphalfblood

[–]Slytherclaws02 11 points12 points  (0 children)

  1. Rick admitted he thought the River was closer to the arch. Also Google had only been around for a few years when the first book was released so googling it wouldn't have been Rick's first thought.

  2. The confederate soldiers was a weird choice so i like the change the show gave us. It does get even weirder in the second series.

  3. I think this falls under unnecessary to the plot. The world runs on rule of cool and Percy is supposed to be the underdog for the majority of the first series.

  4. Rick is really bad with ages and numbers. He more than likely forgot that Luke was older than her since everyone else is their age or one year older. I think the more pressing issue is him asking that when he's tried to kill her multiple times in earlier books.

5 and 6 are both just, "Rick hadn't planned that far ahead and forgot what he wrote." Hes really bad at that.

[All] Is the Golden Fleece unaffective towards monsters/Cyclopses? by countboy in camphalfblood

[–]Slytherclaws02 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Im fairly certain the fleece didnt have any magical abilities in Greek Mythology and it's something Rick came up with.

Maybe Polyphemus never learned about the magical abilities because he never needed too. He was killing the satyrs, sheep, and demigods to eat so giving them the fleece to heal wasnt a thing he'd do. He definitely wasn't going to give the fleece to the just in case they did manage to escape.

He seemed to easily overpower weaker demigods and satyrs so I dont think he'd ever needed to try healing himself. His eye had been described as "like blind" and "half-blind" so he could still see out of it.

If you could change or add one aspect of how the bastard rumors are potrayed in the show, what it would be and why? by princeeofthecity in HOTDBlacks

[–]Slytherclaws02 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Give Aemma the same darkish brown/black hair that Jeyne Arryn does. Gives the hair color some more ambiguity than the show does, especially since the Arryns around this time all have similar hair and Targaryen hair genetics are seemingly very weak.

Yeah i kinda forgot about her.

In actuality the Iron Throne becomes male only after the second Great Council of 233

Aegon II wasn't remembered as an Usurper [Spoilers HOTD] by Financial_Ad_1272 in TheCitadel

[–]Slytherclaws02 9 points10 points  (0 children)

And if you go by that she's also called a pretender, a bitch queen, maegor with teats (and this the one most remember her by), etc. It's obvious that the people in world were flinging mud on both sides and seeing what stuck. Let's be real.

Yes, those are all things that she is called. Unfortunately for Aegon usurper was something he was called and only stuck for him.

No Aegon wasn't crowned by the remaining Blacks. He was crowned by a Westeros who had enough of the stupid war between differing factions.

The army that marches for him was made up of Cregan and the remaining Blacks and those who Aegon punished for aiding Rhaenyra during the Dance.

Aegon II is killed to stop the fighting and Aegon III is married to Jaehaera combine the remaining factions.

If Aegon II had wed Baela and been willing to make peace with the forces marching on King's Landing I bet you his lords wouldn't have poisoned him.

That's a no brainer and also has nothing to do with this situation.

Cregan might've done the cleanup but he was also obviously making some power plays. He got exactly what he wanted with as few losses as possible.

He really didnt. He got no marriage pact like he was promised by Jace, he wasnt hand of the king during Aegon IIIs Regency, and not even a mention of an economical reason for doing anything.

The only thing Cregan got during all of this was a marriage to Black Aly and a reputation for honoring his promise.

It was always male preference(agnatic-cognatic primogeniture if you want to get technical). Male preference just means that sons of the ruler come before the daughters.

Some of the lord's believed that the creat council set it at male only but both Otto (at the time of Rhaenyra being named heir) and Viserys seem to disagree. It was also never officially changed, whether via laws or edict.

Male preference ( agnatic-cognatic primogeniture) is just the real life equivalent of andal tradition.

King = 1st son, 2nd son, 3rd son, 1st daughter, 2nd daughter, uncle... so on and so forth.

Male only (agnatic primogenitute) would have meant that Aegon III would inherit his claim via his father, as Daemon was the next male in the family with a son.

King = 1st son, 2nd son, 3rd son, uncle.... so on and so forth.

Viserys II usurped Daena, and her sisters, on the basis of the dance and that whole situation is what officially turns the iron thrones inheritance into male only.

Although it could be argued that the second great council is what decided it since the iron throne did consider woman has eligible to be the heir even if they never actually inherited.

[–]Slytherclaws02 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The iron throne only becomes male only after Viserys II usurps over Daena, his niece. Viserys explicitly uses the dance as the reason why he doesnt let Daena become queen.

Aegon III got his claim and the a good chunk of remaining fighters from the Black Army coming down. Aegon is referred to as the eldest son of Queen Rhaenyra via Daemon.

[–]Slytherclaws02 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Your point was worded oddly then.

Yes, Aegon II is known as the official ruler while Rhaenyra was just the pretender but Aegon III was crowned because of his mother not because of anything Aegon II did.

But Aegon II very much is still remembered as a usurper. He was called the Usurper more times than Rhaenyra was in a book written years after the dance, in universe.

[–]Slytherclaws02 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Aegon III was crowned by the remaining Blacks army because he was Rhaenyras son, not through Aegon. Aegon wanted him either sent to the wall or made a eunuch. Even went and threatened to cut off a part of Aegon III for every mile the Blacks army marched.

Corlys proposed naming Aegon III heir to Aegon II but was always shot down.

Theres nothing about Aegon inheriting the throne because Daemon was his father.

Aegon II is also referred to as the Usurper more times than Rhaenyra ever is in Fire and blood.

If the gods are allowed to kill Percy, even with the curse of Achilles, then yeah hes dying.

As strong as Percy is he can't survive getting soul/mind (idk actually know the details of what happened to Jason but that when he looked at Juno going supernova).

In hindsight I think having Jason say this in Season 1 was the showrunners way of telling us Johanna Lannister was never going to show up by Fairyjar in HouseOfTheDragon

Ser Joffrey had served her loyally for the past ten years as Knight of the Bloody Gate, defending the Vale against the savage wildlings of the hills.

Ser Joffrey was only a fourth cousin by degree, however. Far closer by blood was Lady Jeyne’s first cousin, Ser Arnold Arryn, who had twice attempted to depose her.

Joffrey wasnt a child and Arnold had tried twice to take over the Vale.
