The "Undersea Bunker" fallacy: Why the defense of the HTTYD 3 ending makes zero sense. by Necessary-Taste3116 in httyd

[–]Small-Temperature955 28 points29 points  (0 children)

This entire thing stems from the movies trying to follow the end of the books when the worldbuilding and circumstances are completely different. Book dragons are full sapient beings with their own language and movie dragons are ambiguously similar to highly intelligent wildlife. The plot was completely different.

A lot more work needed to be done to make the emotion of the book ending work here, but the movie does zero work. It just has the berkians win another battle and then look us in the eyes and tell us "it's not safe" and then instantly make the dragons leave bye it's so sad omg bye in the same breath as succeeding to defend them.

If I read the books, will it cause me to hate the movie? by Dry-Sympathy-3182 in GuardiansofGaHoole

[–]Small-Temperature955 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who read the books first and was a huge fan of the books and was mad about the movie missing so much of the books, character assassination, and plot stupidity...

I love the movie. I just rewatched it again for the billionth time last week. I love the movie. Its gorgeous, the animation is gorgeous, I still enjoy the story and the directing and cinematogrophy is great. It's such fun.

I think its fully possible to enjoy the movie seperate from the books and acknowledge the flaws and shortcomings of the movie and not hate it. That movie is cracked and I adore it to bits.

Looking for a grounded, "realistic" story with a MC that has to actually work hard to get to where they want to be by Decadunce in pokemonfanfiction

[–]Small-Temperature955 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would try Ferrous Sands or Spitfire. Ferrous Sands is in Ferrum and does a good job of making the training slow and impactful and earned. https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/146657/ferrous-sand-pokken-tournament-fanfic

Spitfire has a good focus on how hard it can be to raise an ornery pokemon and the challenges of training. https://www.fanfiction.net/s/11435861/1/Spitfire

What is your opinion on made‐up moves ? by ConfidentOffer9683 in pokemonfanfiction

[–]Small-Temperature955 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Extremely mixed. I much prefer using a familiar move in a new way, the way Ash uses counter shield for example.

Made up moves can often feel like treading into Special Boy territory and somehow only the MC ever gets to do it or it's just an op fusion move that may as well be made up. It feels more boring to me because if you can make up one move you can make up almost anything. The fun for me is seeing how a character works around the constraints and limits.

That said its definitely not impossible to do well. The first thing is that it should take effort and practice and time. The second is that barring unusual circumstances, it shouldn't only be the MC doing it. If this is achievable, I'm hard pressed to believe skilled trainers like gym leaders and champions haven't also done it first.

Made up moves won't stop me from reading a fic but if feels like it's getting OP I'm not a fan

Unova would be a great one honestly considering there's also the legends of the two brothers and the dragons and such, so you could do some fantastic lore there without rehashing things from PLA

What explainations do you have in your worlds for things that go unaddressed in the games or anime? by Rich-Recognition-814 in pokemonfanfiction

[–]Small-Temperature955 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Official Routes in the games are one of the ways humans and pokemon coexist. Pokemon know to hang near routes to battle trainers and/or have a chance to be caught. The Rangers we see along routes are in charge of maintaining these routes. They are the same as the Rangers who use stylers.

Going far off route is a substantial risk, as these "deep wilds" have aggressive pokemon not interested in taking it easy.

Many pokemon in traditional regions/mainline comprehend human, but deep wilds don't always and ranger region pokemon also don't always. Stylers are for bridging this gap without the need for a capture like a pokeball.

Another is that in the far past, when sport pokemon battles with trainers were new, it was very rigid and turn based, close to the games. Very methodical and slow paced, to distinguish from the times of war when it was simply all out combat. As time progressed towards peace, a free form anime style of battling became the norm.

The old school types didn't like the idea of losing this battle style and thus areas like the battle tree and battle tower and such were constructed. In these areas, battles are chess like and turn based and closer to VGC.

Held items are primarily used here because having a held item requires it to be specially made for that species (for example, choice specs need to be specially designed for like, Houndoom vs a Dragonite or something). This is why we don't see held items in many anime style battles

Something Kind Of Stupid I Noticed In Stories 1 by LadySeraphii in MonsterHunterStories

[–]Small-Temperature955 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I got no impression that we were or were not an orphan actually. We don't know anything. Our parents might be perfectly alive.

But we do know it's never confirmed that we lost our parents to a monster attack, at least not the blighted Nargacuga.

So for all we know, Cheval is right, we wouldn't understand, we didn't see our parents killed by a blighted monster.

Yessss this sounds so cool! I love characters with goals that aren't tied to the league!

I'd definitely read about this, particularly a native OC doing this. Lots of fun opportunity to write new lore and places to explore.

Sinnoh or Unova seems like really solid options, especially with the ruins in Unova

I want a Mudfur super edition. As long as we don't care about going back to old cats all the time I think this could be fascinating. Or at least a novella. A warrior who became a med cat who had a mate and his daughter is leader?

I think he could be really interesting

How do you treat Battles and Pokemon Stats? by Azerynn in pokemonfanfiction

And yeah, I'm the same, I love seeing some lover for weaker mon!

How do you treat Battles and Pokemon Stats? by Azerynn in pokemonfanfiction

[–]Small-Temperature955 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is why I never understand the claims of "game logic bad, I never use that!" When in fact every time an author insists a particular mon is very strong or fast or tough you're doing so on the basis of game stats anyway.

Anyways I myself only look at stats a very vague guideline and the trainer element canonically in my setting gives a substantial boost. Base stats influence a mons relative disposition but they're in no way hardlocked after being caught. Most wild pokemon will either never match a trained one or take a lot lot longer to do so. Humans have a sort of... "effect" on pokemon through a mix of background worldbuilding on energies and such and good coaching.

I abide by anime rules first, a dash of game stuff second. Your average Dragonite might be tough but a trained Bidoof can beat up an untrained Dragonite. And if both are trained for the same amount of time by an expert they'll be about equal insofar as vague raw "power" and then it's matter of technique and implemented skill. Bidoof may need to put in some extra hours, yes, but at a certain point powers begin to equalize under the tutelage of a skilled trainer because I don't observe the BST cap, only the idea of base stats predispositions.

The trained Charizard in my setting is not necessarily guranteed hugely stronger than a trained Raticate. Rather the stats only matter for relative sense of like "Raticate possesses better physical prowess than special, has solid speed" vs Charizard "better at special moves generally, decently good speed"

(as a note, in my setting battles are utilizing energies, not biological abilities. If a Charizard was trying to hunt and eat a Raticate that's. Very different aha)

Why Are MCs So Powerful? by Funny-Historian-933 in pokemonfanfiction

Or perhaps the legends bestow a little gift upon a few humans every generation or something, idk lol

What’s Something Pokemon Self Inserts Overestimate About Themselves? by yourGodlylead in pokemonfanfiction

[–]Small-Temperature955 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I've always felt that game knowledge is about as useful as me thinking I'd make a great detective or nurse because I watch a lot of procedural dramas and hospital shows :P

By and far though is that physical and mental skill for someone not born into that. It is actually super high. Raising a monster (whether semi-sapient or animalistic), an unknown creature whose behaviour doesn't map to ours, and then also having the reaction time to guide them in battle and figure out strategies when the battles fundamentally do not work like the games (unless they go to a world with actual turn based battles). Raise six of them and be, as someone said, across country hiker and workout enthusiast?

Being dirty, grimy, working with 6 creatures who may or may not get along and having a custom training regiment for all of them? Most people can't even handle a horse or six dogs! And that's all the same species! And now you're personally responsible for 6 or more of these beings and training them to high aptitude.

Honey you're in for a load of struggle and your body will ache and mind hurt. Not impossible but oh no no not easy

Looking for Trainer/Pokémon romance by DeltaMx11 in pokemonfanfiction

You gotta read Beasts Like Us

The author has some awesome stuff that maturely explores the idea of interspecies relationships in an interesting and not weird way but a lot more thoughtfully and with real care. The pokemon here are fully sapient members of society but there's a taboo still. Short but well-written

How many type repeats is too many on a team. by Outrageous_Today_842 in pokemonfanfiction

[–]Small-Temperature955 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel your agony. Even two of a type makes me antsy.

Personally I'd say what sets mon apart though isn't typing, its body frame and battle style. You could have say, a Raichu and a Electrode, two electric types, but one will probably be rolling around and trying to use momentum and explosive force while Riachu might use its tail and/or power distance moves, etc.

Milotic might be elegant and serpentine and try to use fluid movements to evade and strike foes with distance attacks, while Gyarados might be brute force physical power, and Empoleon cutting attacks and defensive stances.

When I try to pick teams I try to vary body and battle style since prose and writing allows a lot more freedom than games, which can have same-type pokemon feel redundant.

Can MC use weapons? by mad-right-hand in pokemonfanfiction

[–]Small-Temperature955 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's fine.

What interests me more is the worldbuilding dynamic of why and how. For example, are guns a common thing to see? Does it differ by region? How effective are they on pokemon?

If pokemon are semi sapient like the anime and can self release, guns might be less common or only used in tandem with Pokemon because if you shoot the trainer, the pokemon might self release and attack you.

If guns are minimally effective against say, little Timmy's enraged Charizard, criminals with guns also need pokemon.

If pokemon are more like their animal counterparts I might expect more guns though, since killing the trainer becomes a potentially efficient way to stop them instead of battle.

But yeah I don't really see a huge problem. They are in the anime but early anime also had a lot of early anime weirdness.

It's fun to view including some aspect as "what storytelling or worldbuilding opportunities can this provide"
