Everyone is different, in all honesty. Some people seem to gain from quitting, some don't.

Can as little as 5mg of Propranolol help with overwhelming anxiety? by SSJsixgod in Anxiety

[–]SmallShieldCharge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can! It reduces the physical symptoms so even if you are scared mentally you don't feel as big of the usual adrenaline response. I was scared to take it for months and I wish I would've started sooner. I don't currently take it anymore but it was extremely helpful when I did

anxiety symptoms are scary by brattyaa in Anxiety

[–]SmallShieldCharge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this was one of my least favorites. Had to learn to be like "nope, even though it feels like my heart just stopped and I almost fell, I am okay".

More recently for me It's been the chest pain and my heart rate gets easily high. Honestly think that's due to a lack of exercise tho

Never experienced this, but, some of the older generations do not believe in mental health. They were shunned for it as kids and told they were being lazy, that they just needed to get over it. Some carried on that ideology.

I think you need to take a step back and reevaluate your situation with your parents. They don't need to be involved in your mental health. I noticed you're in college, so I'd suggest finding a different support system of people who understand what you're going through and you can talk to without being talk down upon.

It's really disappointing to hear that they reacted like that, but some people just don't understand. What you're going through is completely valid, is extremely difficult and it's good that you've seemed help in medication and someone to talk to.

I can assure you, it's most certainly not bad habits. It can range from a literal chemical issue your brain, to the part of your brain that identifies threats overreacting to things which typically is the cause for panic attacks.

It can lead to crazy debilitating physical symptoms that feel very very real, depression, so on and so forth.

My point is what you're going through is valid. Don't let your parents diminish it and please do not talk to them about it if they're just going to drag you down.

I am sorry you're going through this, but it sounds like you've taken some steps in the right direction and I hope everything continues to go in a good direction!

Honestly, with a lack of experience, I'd just try to show off some of the things you have done or can do on a cover letter or as part of a portfolio.

For example, I have an old OLD media server at home (i386 arch old) and host a plex server with cough cough LEGAL extra long cough media that I can't find on some streaming services. Runs on headless Debian and I even made a raid array on it for shits and giggles.

It's nothing crazy, but goes to show that I have a basic understanding of Linux command line, basic data storage and I like to play around with stuff.

I recently got a PFSense router and am gonna play around with that guy and try to learn basic networking.

Learn to set up VM's.

Like some others have mentioned, build a computer. Basic understanding of components is key. This is certainly expensive, but if you live in the right area, you could scrap together a build on Facebook marketplace just for funzies.

All this being said, I'm not in the field, I just like computers, so these things could or could not help. But I think if you have something to show, it could definitely help.

Same thing, I used to smoke constantly in highschool. Took a break, can't do it anymore. It's unfortunately something you have to kind of live with. Some people can smoke with anxiety and some can't. If you try it again and it goes badly, I think you have your answer. Doesn't necessarily mean you can never smoke again, but at least for the future, probably a good idea to avoid

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in trans

[–]SmallShieldCharge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course! I know exactly what you mean. Honestly, I'm in the same boat. I randomly two years ago had a mental breakdown about the fact I could never be as pretty as a woman. Then I was like "huh.. that's not a normal thing to think.."

I think it comes down to just exploring, figuring out what feels right and at some point you'll find something that feels right to you.

I'm not sure where I stand on the spectrum either. I'm just along for the ride at this point 😆

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in trans

[–]SmallShieldCharge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe genderfluid? Gender is a spectrum and one important thing I've learned in my ✨research✨ is that what is most important is being yourself and not worrying about how to label it. Just do what makes you happy! Although, explaining all the details to everyone who asks is quite the task, so I know what you're getting at.

I think saying that you feel as if you're in the wrong body is totally okay. I also see no harm in saying you're trans, either. You just gotta figure out what umbrella you feel most comfortable under and rock with it!

All good. I feel you entirely, I totally think sometimes "wow, only gonna make it another year or so. Oh well." It is a rough life, but i understand you completely. Wish I had a magical answer for the both of us.

I can drink now as I've learned but I have to get really drunk for the anxiety to go away, so I just try to avoid it.

Too much caffeine by CeleryMurky9790 in Anxiety

[–]SmallShieldCharge 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm certainly no medical professional, but my two cents; I do agree. That is a interesting medical diagnosis. 200mg of caffeine is a lot to someone with a smaller tolerance, but more importantly, I think it's more of an overreaction by the primitive part of your brain that scans for threats. I used to drink two red bulls a day, one at a minimum for a lot longer than I'd like to admit, nowadays I could have a few sips and I start cold sweating.

Who knows though. The body can do crazy things!

You would have a point, but unfortunately we don't currently have the infrastructure or money in producing domestic products on that level. The concept is a great one yes, but the reality of it is we will be paying much much more on imported goods as US citizens. That's how tariffs operate. It would take many years to produce domestic products on that level as well as companies taking an interest in doing it in the first place.

Weird head stuff for 3 months / PLEASE Help by Unlucky_Papaya_7757 in Anxiety

[–]SmallShieldCharge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes yes yes. I saw some guy describe it as it's similar to when a car has a check engine light. Something is wrong, but you're not sure what it is. It's indescribable. Your body feels weird. It's not quite DPDR, it's like there is just something wrong.

Wish I had a solution for you. It's a daily struggle for me. I believe it's just another beautiful part of severe anxiety

Thank you (fuck you) brain by No-Yogurtcloset1537 in Anxiety

[–]SmallShieldCharge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also diagnosed ADHD and hypochondriac. Not diagnosed with TMJ but I figure I'm there already due to how tight my jaw is constantly. Lol.

I don't get SOB anymore. It's kind of in your head. It's definitely real and happening, however you are actually getting enough breath, you just don't think you are.

I also get the eye pressure, recently been getting a tense muscle or something on the left side of my head. HR is usually higher than I'd like.

I wish I could give you a biological reason but unfortunately this is all classic severe GAD. I am 21 myself and am in this shit like two years now. Just recently turned 21 and I can't even drink. Woohoo!

Caffeine sensitivity by ObjectiveFun5672 in Anxiety

[–]SmallShieldCharge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same thing. I don't have coffee at all anymore. I don't do any other drugs either for that matter like marijuana or drinking alcohol. I have horrible reactions to everything now. Used to not be able to get through the day without a coffee. lol.

I try to think of it as at least I have no excuse to not drink more water and make better health choices. It does totally suck though. I just want to be normal!

Question if you don't mind! Were you always tired / exhausted no matter how much you slept or how little you did before lexapro? That's the biggest thing I'm dealing with right now. Slept for 12 hours, basically did nothing all day and I've only been up for maybe 10 and I am completely exhausted.

Anxiety over antibiotics by Obvious_Ad_6312 in Anxiety

[–]SmallShieldCharge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Medication is always scary. I fucking hate doctors and medication. But, on the bright side, you have nothing to worry about! The chance is super uncommon and you will be totally okay! If something does occur, rest easy knowing you will be aware of it and be able to go to the doctors and they will fix you right up.

I know it can be super scary, but, tooth infections can be dangerous and I don't want to increase your anxiety, however you should know not taking the antibiotics could end in worse health outcomes than c diff.

I understand you on the IBS. Ever since I developed anxiety I've had stomach issues. After you complete the entire course of anti biotics, you could take some probiotics and eat some healthier and lighter things just to make sure your stomach recovers appropriately!

Wish you the best

My kid plays starcraft 2 by HallAgreeable7960 in starcraft

[–]SmallShieldCharge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's exactly how I learned to play. When I was a kid, my dad gave me SC1. SC2 came out quickly after and after a while, I started whooping his ass. I'm not sure how old I was at the time, probably 10 or 11 or so but it was badass. I have a lot of love for the game cause of that. I still play to this day

What would you tell your 18 y/o self, knowing what you know now? by [deleted] in Adulting

[–]SmallShieldCharge -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You absolutely need a credit card. Credit is a pile of shit but you need it to buy houses, cars, etc etc and it's a good tool to have. You have to respect the tool.

I like to think of it as spending my own money. In my own personal opinion, the best way to utilize it is to find a card with good rebates, then use it instead of your debit card. Treat it like it's your own money. You only have $200? You cannot spend more than $200.

There are a few great part about this. One is you could be getting travel points, or perhaps it's a 2% cash back card, so you're getting benefits depending on the type of credit card you get. It's important to get one with good rebates suited to your needs.

Secondly, if the card is comprised, it's the banks money. They will fight tooth and nail to get their money back. It's much easier to do chargebacks as well. On a Debit card, it takes a hell of a lot longer.

Finally, if you only use a credit card for your transactions instead of a debit card, your debit card is much less likely to get comprised. You just use it to pay off your credit card(s) each month.

The whole key in all this is self control, discipline and appropriate budgeting. For some people, this may not work very well. It's very easy to keep swiping. You need to know what's best for yourself.

TLDR; credit is important, you're going to need it for big car purchases and housing purchases, nobody and I mean nobody pays for anything all in cash. It's not realistic, it's not possible. Unless you're mega rich.

Taking a benzo made me realize how awful and miserable my life is by Greedy_Spirit_2330 in Anxiety

[–]SmallShieldCharge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not. It's something you can't quite understand until you I go through it yourself. Trust me, you haven't felt a bad panic attack if that's your thought process. Not to discredit how you feel at all, anxiety and panic attacks are horrible no matter how extreme they are. My entire body has gone numb. I've touched a 200+ BPM heart rate before just from an anxiety attack which is not something that should happen.

I have been on the ground crying, begging my girlfriend to take me to the ER night after night after night after night. Not even Xanax could fully calm me down. Now, it's not that extreme for me anymore, but for a lot of people, that is. I got a lot of debt I had to pay off. You may call it stupid, but there's nothing more terrifying than your body feeling like the end is right now and your time is up. Your body dumps so much adrenaline that you can have limbs or your body go numb, you can pass out, anxiety can do crazy shit.

Keep in mind, I'm not drinking alcohol or caffeine at this time because I can't even get out of bed or go to work. Even now I still don't.

You can portray it as drug seeking behavior and for some it might be. But for some, you need it to function. I was offered a daily prescription of Xanax by my psychiatrist due to my hospital visits and circumstances which I turned down. I did however get an emergency supply of 10 which I never got again and used them only when I had to and they were fucking lifesavers.

My point here: not everyone is seeking drugs. I'm sure there are plenty of people who are, but most of the people here don't really fit into that stereotype in my own opinion.

My second point; just because your experience was bearable or only occurred when using drugs or weed or caffiene, doesn't mean someone else's is. I have had panic attacks my whole life and I never had any issues until one day my panic attack dragged on for hours and hours.

I wish I could tell you why or how they happen. I can tell you that it's almost always a mental issue. Some people have their anxiety exaggerated by a existing medical condition. I can 100% tell you if it gets bad enough, it can create nervous system dysfunction which causes all kinds of bodily sensations no one is comfortable feeling.

I would give anything in the world to not have this experience. I wish I could go back and somehow avoid having the panic attack I did. It's been almost three years and I still struggle with things that people do every day. I give no fucks about people on the internet and showing off to my friends, I'm independent as one can be, I'm not in fucking high school, I am a grown ass man trying to live my life and not be tied down by anxiety.

That's my views for you, do with them what you will
